Incidentally, I saw the Wrens over the weekend at the Knitting Factory. It was a little disappointing -- not as good as the more intimate show I saw in Long Beach several months ago. The big problem was that the singing was glaringly off-pitch and tour-worn, and that's crucial when you're talking about a band who frequently tries three-part harmonies. The lead guitarist's voice was especially raw -- so much so that he directly apologized for it, and joked about refunding $2 of everyone's ticket. The setlist was a lot more raucous than the Long Beach one -- the latter practically came off like a "sadcore" show. Excellent drummer, by the way. Stood out more, with the louder material. Not enough Secaucus tracks at the Knitting Factory, except for "Indie 500" as an encore. They ought to play "Built-In Girls" every night, damn it. That song is a goddamn masterpiece. Speaking of which, the IMDB now has a full cast list on the film which reveals Robyn's character name as "Laurent Tokar". He's 14th billed, which still puts him well above Dean Stockwell for what that's worth. Interestingly the IMDB "trivia" on Robyn is that he's the son of "SF writer Raymond Hitchcock", who *also* has an IMDB entry, although neither has a photo on their entries. I don't see how the older Zappa's infantile sexism and weird attitude about gay people should inform my appreciation of something like One Size Fits All, where neither attitude really pops up. If I said "any guitar solo over two minutes in length is wankery, thus not listening to", that would be pat dismissal. Saying instead "I like parts of _Guitar_, but some of it is just fretboard wanking" may be glossing over some nuances -- any one-sentence comment is going to do that -- but what am I supposed to say instead? "Some of it is just too slow"? "Some of it just has too much banjo in it"? Those things aren't even true! Take Frank in toto, or leave him alone. This seems kind of a, um, fundamentalist attitude toward Zappa: why (esp. given his enormous catalog) can't we say this stuff is good, this tendency isn't, etc.? FZ's humor is funny when it's absurdist, incisive when it's attempting social commentary (except, with rare exceptions, on gender roles and gay sexuality - he just didn't seem to "get" the latter in particular), but often tedious when it heads toward the bathroom, esp. when he hauls out the dumb-guy voice. And it seems awfully clear to me that many of the "rock" albums from the late seventies onward were done mostly out of commercial necessity: he was far more interested in exploring orchestral and Synclavier composition than in doing the rock thing anymore. (I've never understood the fervor that _Joe's Garage_ occasions - to me, it's too long by at least half, and the composition and arrangements just aren't up to his best standards.) I actually have a reasonably high tolerance for guitar soloing - I think the solos on the studio version of "Marquee Moon" (to dramatically change subject) are too *short*, if anything -b ut I can't listen to an entire album of nothing but, esp. when everyone else (no matter how interesting the parts they're playing) are way down in the mix). Put *one* of the numbers on any of the guitar-solo collections elsewhere, and I'm fine. Put 'em all together, and I'm bored...and thinking "wankery," yes. I think also that nearly *any* criticism can be *used* as a "pat tactic" - - but that doesn't make it always an illegitimate criticism. - ------------------------------- ...Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: "In two thousand years, they'll still be looking for Elvis - :: this is nothing new," said the priest. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jul 2004 23:38:43 -0500 From: steve Subject: Re: intellect/soul, soul/intellect > On Fri, 23 Jul 2004, steve wrote: > >> A pat tactic for easy dismissal in the first case, beside the point in >> the second. You're taking my in toto too in toto. I was given Thing-Fish, but I've only listened to it once. I've no problem with someone saying that X album is not to his taste. My objection is to "Zappa would be great if he would only change X or Y." > If I said "any guitar solo over two minutes in length is wankery, thus > not > listening to", that would be pat dismissal. The first issue was dismissing *all* Zappa, which you obviously don't. My comment intended for the universe of Zappa criticism, rather than as a reply to a particular post. > Saying instead "I like parts > of _Guitar_, but some of it is just fretboard wanking" may be glossing > over some nuances -- any one-sentence comment is going to do that -- > but > what am I supposed to say instead? But I consider the guitar albums to be a kind of footnote. They certainly demonstrate Zappa's guitar craft, but are mostly divorced from the original context.
