It's been a long time since I laughed so hard at a movie. Lots of the jokes misfire but many of them do not. It's the first comedy in quite a while that I have thought about seeing a second time. One of my wife's coworkers; Larry Kane, was an advisor on the film. Larry was an Anchor at all three of the big networks in Philly and at WABC TV in NYC(briefly). One of the local Philly papers has pointed out that Will Ferrel's character bears a striking resemblance to the anchor; Jim Gardner, who replaced him at the ABC affiliate here in the mid-70's(and he's still there). Considering that the co-writer of the film is from philly one has to wonder. I wish I could find a picture of him from the 70's, we threw the paper away. Then I realized that I could hardly remember any individual songs, so I dusted off my vinyl copy of Strange Times and put it on the turntable. What a joy! The brain is an amazing organism; I probably hadn't heard any of these songs in 15 years, but I still knew half the lyrics when given prompts. Anyway, was anyone else so stricken back in the day? Oh yeah, I love Squeeze through East Side Story. I loved going to see them as well. We had our car towed in NYC in 1981 during or after their concert on the pier because we didn't see the "No Parking" sign near my friend's apartment on the upper west side, where we had parked. It took us an entire day to retrieve it. Gee, what should I do first: mow the lawn or hang up laundry? Such choices. What's funny about this - okay, one thing that's funny about it - is that over on The List Dedicated to E-vil Musicians and Their Lame Pants and Smarting Puns, we've been doing something similar with musician names. I'm always interested in people's watershed moments or epiphanies music-wise. (This could be the topic for a new thread!) For some reason I missed hearing this song, though in appreciating Neil Young I go back to the album Harvest, even his Buffalo Springfield days. Cortez the Killer... I will look up the cover versions as well - Church covers it you say. But I am already sure that no one can do it as simply and powerfully as Neil. He's Mr. Basic.
