It's not just that beer brings fegs together, but specific beer. Wouldn't've had to've been Newcastle, but that was the fegfriendliest option at the bar. In my defense, by the time Brian pegged me I'd already overheard some other guy saying he was from Ohio and thought I'd found my guy, but no such luck. >>As we did talk and chat I wish we >could've spoke more as Rex is a very interesting and fun spirit. It >seemed I spent too much time speaking with an old girlfriend who was >also there. ...another Ohio native coincidentally in the house. Pretty weird. I must say that was a seriously fun evening. As a relatively recent Monochrome Set convert (largely on Nuppy's recommendation), it surprised me that one of my longtime good friends, Babs, was such a fan that she'd actually booked the show, and two other pals of mine, Nick and Al formerly of the band Popdefect and generally way cooler and more punk-rock than myself, were there to kneel at Bid's feet and have him sign rare 7"'s and stuff. Bid was swell, too. I didn't get to be in his band like Nuppy, but I did lend him my music stand, and get to spontaneously and simultaneously say the words "Chuck Berry" with him. Not too shabby. Brian's a swell guy indeed, and he neglects to mention that in addition to being drawn into a conversation with his friend he was also drafted into recording the show (which was quite great in and of itself), so he was a busy fellow. Still, we did get to share more than a few of those Newcastles and chat about music and fegdom in general, and a good time was had by all. He also doesn't mention that due to a few small-world e-mails before the fact, he'd already become a mid-sized celebrity amongst my friends without me ever mentioning him to them. Nuppy, when Babs Radlein wants to be introduced to you... you've arrived. >The next night I didn't see Rex and I drank so much Bastard Ale that the >following morning while on the Metro subway enroute to the airport, I >puked all over myself and the seat infront of me. Yeah, the print/layout on the back does look kind of cheap, but they all sound great. And you have to own the individual albums to have the astounding full-length original versions of "Mother Sky" and "Halleluwah" (from Soundtracks and Tago Mago respectively). If you DO want to shell out import prices for Krautrock, try Deluxe by Harmonia, or Coeur de Verre (aka Heart of Glass) by Popol Vuh (much heavier and guitar-centric than a lot of their records. Their spacey side is well heard on the Nosferatu soundtrack). And of course, Yeti by Amon Duul II, probably the most paradigmatic slab along with Tago Mago. I'm largely ignorant of Faust since having a "mmehh" response to them 10 or 11 years ago. I'm due for another listen on that front.
