I couldn't stand more than a couple of minutes. I was a lot happier downstairs getting another pint in. It's all been done far too many times before and probably several times better. I don't mean to sound rude, I just am, and if he was a horse I think he would've been shot years ago. Luckily it got better with Mike G's band surprising me with their (much punkier than I was expecting) sound. Dolph gave his all and The New Moon were just as good as usual. I'll eventually get round to committing Mike's and Dolph's sets to CD/MP3 for those who were interested. High point on the first record is "White Cat Heat," an... erm... a cappella number wherein they all meow and screech like cats for a couple of minutes. Second record climaxes with the epic-length "Crusade," containing the unbeatable lyric "and since that time ten years have passed/the starving dog is dead now". The Godz made the Shaggs look like Steely Dan. I mean they REALLY couldn't fucking play. What made them great was that they were sneeringly, aggressively proud of that fact. Plus the lyrics do scrape a certain lobotomized genius here and there. Lester Bangs has a fabulous Godz essay which will make you run to your nearest vendor. By the third record they were learning to play and getting very dull. First record has a track called "Squeak"-- a minute and a half or so of one of them scraping aimlessly on a violin. Second album revisits "Squeak"-- same exact thing, except this time with a VIOLA. They were restless, questing spirits, those ESP-Disk artists...
