Two observations from my journey, from which I am fragrently returned: a) Miles is cool b) Rush still kicks ass The former I suspected, and it's always nice to pair up faces to names. For those who haven't met Miles, he is every bit as thoughtful and engaging in person as he appears on list...plus he's blessed with the dulcet tones of a radio man! Seriously, Miles - ever do any voiceover work? ;) I had to beg off record store haunting with him today to try and beat some nasty weather home, although we did manage to share a nice "low-calorie" breakfast with conversation at the legendary Pancake Pantry. For his hospitality, a public thanks from me. The latter was surprising perhaps only in the depth and seriouness of the ass-kicking. PIXIES SOLD-OUT LONDON SHOWS TO BE RECORDED Will Be Available as Limited Edition Double-CDs and via NetBurn on the Web The PIXIES, who headline four sold-out shows at London's Brixton Academy next week (June 2-5), and DiscLive, the U.S.-based company that records, manufacturers and delivers live discs immediately after a concert, announce that all four of the Pixies' Brixton Academy shows will be recorded and made available as a limited edition double-CD, and via NetBurn. These collectable concerts will be titled "Live at Brixton Academy." "Live at Brixton Academy" will go on sale beginning next week exclusively at www.disclive.com and fans will have two options for purchase - the first - a double-CD package, individually numbered and complete with artwork unique to the particular show. These double-CD sets will be mailed to buyers by June 21. The second option will be via a new DiscLive technology called NetBurn, where the customer can - within three hours of the desired concert - - burn the music directly onto a CD. The double-CD package will be priced at $25.00 (plus shipping costs), and only 1500 of each concert will be manufactured. Buyers will be limited to two copies each. In addition, fans who purchase the double-CD package will be given a password to allow them to use NetBurn in order to burn the concert onto a blank CD, at no extra cost. The NetBurn only option will be limited to 1000 burns for each concert and sell for $18.00. The Pixies invited DiscLive to accompany them on their recent North American "warm up" dates, recording and manufacturing fifteen different "Pixies Live" CDs that have already sold out. The band plans to have DiscLive out on the road again to make the limited edition concert CDs available to fans on their upcoming North American fall tour which kicks off September 4 in Bend, OR. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 May 2004 22:27:27 -0400 From: fingerpuppets Subject: [none] thanks to rh60 for seeding this on stg! I had to rush there straight from work (I get off work at 9:00) and unfortunately missed the first opening band, the Places, which is too bad because I like them. I did arrive in time to catch about half of the second opening act, the Long Winters, who were surprisingly awesome - good ol' heartfelt jangly indie-rock with a bit of a rootsy feel, and a singer who (from a distance) looked ALARMINGLY like a young Andy Partridge, right down to the mannerisms. I thought about picking up their album, but decided to get a Decemberists tour T-shirt instead. The Decemberists always bring out the local fegs, and tonight was no exception, as I ran into our very own John B. Jones and one of his friends. The Sloop John B. is as surprisingly tall as ever. After talking to them, I found a decent spot in the crowd to stand and put my bag down. The Aladdin (where the show took place) is a seated venue, but people were standing up front. It was kind of depressing to note that the place was twice as full as when I saw Jay Farrar there in January. So the Decemberists took the stage, and seemed a bit tentative at first - Colin Meloy explained that this was the first night of the tour and they were performing some stuff they'd never done before - but soon hit their stride. Keyboardist/accordionist Jenny Conlee emoted wildly (she's the most dramatic keyboardist I've seen besides Sam Coomes), guitarist guy Chris Funk played a parade drum during "A Cautionary Tale," and drummer Rachel Blumberg sang a Fleetwood Mac song in a thin nasally voice and showed off "the sixth member of the Decemberists," her brand new gong. They did many of my favorites but alas, no "July, July!" I've seen them four times now and they've never played it. :( Colin played the piano on one new song, the first time he'd played in front of a crowd since the fifth grade, he said. He did a fine job. He also explained that the lost bicycle which he wrote "The Apology Song" about was actually found, but without a seat. The best part of the show, as usual, was "The Chimbley Sweep," which culminated in a dramatic guitar/accordion duel. The main set ended with a great Echo and the Bunnymen cover, the title of which John B. told me, but which I immediately forgot. Throughout the show, I was pretty much the only person who danced. I think I'll go down in Portland music scene legend as "the girl who dances at Decemberists shows." The band encored with their prog-a-riffic epic, "The Tain," the highlight of which was when Rachel came up front to sing and Colin played the drums. He is the most absurdly entertaining drummer I've ever seen - complete with wildly flailing drumsticks and massive amounts of grimacing. I kinda wish he'd play drums all the time. After the show, I was without tinfoil sculptures, but determined to speak to Chris Funk, since, in a very odd turn of events, he had answered a personal ad I'd placed on Craig's List a couple of months ago. I think I owe him a drink, or vice versa. No drinks were purchased - he was getting ready to pack up his stuff and was moreover chatting with about ten other people - - but I did get to show off my new tattoo to him and got a hug before I left. I also snuck upstairs to the dressing room and timidly said hi to Colin before fleeing, feeling like an interloper. (Chris and I agreed that "the Interlopers" would be a great band name.) I'd make a terrible groupie. On my way out, I passed by Rachel who turned out to be teeny-tiny - even shorter than me - and told her how much she rocked, which she does. That's all that happened. n. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Watch LIVE baseball games on your computer with MLB.TV, included with MSN Premium! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 May 2004 02:00:43 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: late-night gnatmaniax: the Decemberists (again) On Friday, May 28, 2004, at 12:26 AM, Natalie Jane wrote: > He is the most absurdly entertaining drummer I've ever seen - > complete with wildly flailing drumsticks and massive amounts of > grimacing. The Long Winters album is very worthwhile... it actually placed well ahead of the Decemberists themselves in my year-end Top 10 last year. I've been playing it quite a lot lately, and if I were to re-do my '03 Top 10 right now, it would probably rank even higher. I couldn't say precisely why, but song for song it's really stuck with me. I remember Eb liking them as well... One thing, though, if you buy the record used and think that someone spilled wax on the booklet cover... they didn't, it's just a really weird packaging strategy that I only figured out after owning the record for half a year and indeed once spending a minute or two trying to scrape the schmutz off of it... - -Rex Need a new email address that people can remember Check out the new EudoraMail at http://www.eudoramail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 May 2004 13:09:36 -0400 From: "Stewart C. Blue Springs received the grant two years ago from the Youth Outreach Unit, money the city and U.S. Rep. Sam Graves trumpeted proudly as a way to fight a perceived Goth problem. But $132,000 of the grant was returned because officials never found much of a problem with the Goth culture, which some students called a fad that most people eventually outgrow. Slightly more than $118,000 of the money was earmarked for therapy, assessment and case management, and the plans also included a series of town meetings to discuss the issue. "It never happened because referring someone for looking, acting Goth is not a concept that ever got imbedded in people's heads," project manager Allyce Ford said of the therapy proposal. The town hall meetings didn't happen, either, she said, because there wasn't enough interest in the community to conduct them. About halfway through the project, the focus shifted from Goths to counter cultures and negative influences facing children, Ford said. "You have to admit if you saw one, two, three, four or more people dressed in traditional Goth, it would be discerning," she said. "Those kids have every right to be there. I hope the lessons you're teaching are tolerance and understanding." Assistant City Administrator Eric Johnson said despite the change in focus, the project helped dispel myths and stereotypes associated with the Goth culture. "That was part of the goal," Johnson said. "If we were able to accomplish that, we are able to accomplish something effective." ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V13 #155 ********************************
