No, really! As some of you know, my recent moving house has prompted me to kick over the last embers of PVs, and particularly to get rid of the archive. The press cuttings and correspondence are going to the Vegetable Friends group - who will hopefully put anything of interest on the website - but there is also a huge heap of vinyl, tapes & CDs (60+ tapes alone) going begging, including a fair amount of the things that 10 years ago you were all writing to me explaining that they didn't exist (Surfer Ghost, the SBs final gig, Saw My Dinner on TV, Plutonium Express et al). The tapes are free to anyone who wants them (Paul, Roberta, Marc, Ferris & Bayard have first call on anything they want); some of the vinyl is rare blah blah (plus is hard to mail securely, especially transatlantic) so I'll charge if anyone wants any of that. The list's too long to post to the list, so if anyone wants it let me know. If any of you are still in touch with Barb Lien I'd be grateful if you could forward this to her, too. Incidentally, JJB's are doing a 3 month residency at Manumission (June-September) in case anyone fancies going to the World's Biggest (and tackiest) Nightclub... The fecal critique landed in her open mouth. Showing more aplomb than Tippi Hedren ever displayed in "The Birds," the Brooklyn-born rocker wiped her tongue on her sleeve and kept on rockin'. The 50-year-old singer did kvetch backstage that a bird once plopped on her head while she was on stage. "My grandmother says it's good luck, but I think it's disgusting," she moaned. By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer NEW YORK - Phish, the Vermont-based jam band whose legions of dedicated fans made them one of the nation's top touring acts, announced Tuesday that they were breaking up. The surprise announcement came as the band prepared to release a new album, "Undermind," on June 15 and embark on a summer tour, which will kick off June 17 at Coney Island in Brooklyn, a borough of New York City. Band leader Trey Anastasio (news) made the announcement on the band's Web site. "Last Friday night, I got together with Mike, Page and Fish to talk openly about the strong feelings I've been having that Phish has run its course and that we should end it now while it's still on a high note," he wrote. The quartet, which includes Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon and Page McConnell, was formed in 1983. The band drew thousands of fans to their concerts with marathon performances and long, experimental jams that melded every type of music, from bluegrass to electronica. Some shows drew up to 80,000 fans, and for many of them, the band became the center of their universe. Much like the fans of the Grateful Dead before them, fans would follow the band from show to show. Phish's encouragement of the taping of their concerts also endeared them to their audiences. Phish went on a two-year hiatus in 2000. In the interim, band members delved into different solo projects. Anastasio has released three solo albums, including his latest, 2004's "Seis De Mayo," while Gordon released his solo debut, "Inside In," last year. Phish ended their hiatus with a series of shows at New York City's Madison Square Garden. The first was on New Year's Eve 2002. Anastasio called that hiatus an attempt to revitalize themselves. But he said that was no longer an option. "We don't want to become caricatures of ourselves, or worse yet, a nostalgia act," he said. "By the end of the meeting, we realized that after almost 21 years together we were faced with the opportunity to graciously step away in unison, as a group, united in our friendship and our feelings of gratitude." Phish will end their tour in Coventry, Vt., in a two-day festival Aug. 14-15 at Newport State Airport. "We are proud and thrilled that it will be in our home state of Vermont," Anastasio said. "It's been an amazing and incredible journey. We thank you all for the love and support that you've shown us." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 18:30:12 EDT From: AidMerr@aol.com Subject: FYI The volume of replies I've had - and bearing in mind that it's only been up for a couple of hours - make me realise just how many people there are looking for RH rarities. Steve, what you would miss are the lyrics and song credits (each tune is different) in Bram, plus some great artwork/photos from both. How can anyone *live* without the 'electric' version of 1974? ;) Brings up an interesting point. For some people cover art doesn't matter. I think I remember hearing an interview with Peter Buck (right after he blew off Tom Clark for the 2nd time!) and he mentioned he didn't care if a good record came in a plain white sleeve, while Stipe was completely the opposite. Did Peter Buck say, "Fuck you, Tom Clark!" But see here's the thing with buying albums electronically. I would only get them like that if I really didn't care much about details of the albums. Besides the artwork, which at least you get the front cover of the album from the iTMS, you're not getting anything from the insert(s). As I've done more trades for items which don't normally exist as CD's, I've gotten more used to coverless records. But at the same time when I've borrowed and burned discs from friends I've usually actually color-copied the artwork (booklet front/back and inlay at least, more if the notes are really good or rare)and thus have quite a few CDR's that look just like the originals to judge then by the spines sitting on my shelves. And if I have the vinyl copy of something I've digitized, I'll shrink that cover art down to a CD-sized color copy. So I guess I'm a bit obsessive about this kind of thing. >>Plus I suffer slighty from Marcholdenism and must >have tangable items. Dinosaurs, we are rapidly becoming. I choose to think that I'm holding on to the idea of music-in-tangible/physical-form because I fear that when that goes away, it'll also signal the end of the idea of an "album" as well. But I may be kidding myself there... I mean, that'll probably happen, but it may not be why I still wanna own a physical record. - -Rex, who just this weekend for the first time burned an album he'd borrowed from a friend and dumped into iTunes onto its own, artworkless disc, thus probably crossing some kind of personal music-tangibility rubicon he can't quite quantify... But at the same time when I buy a real CD I do study the innards closely. Being back on the inside, I can tell you that detailed artwork and liner notes are an extremely popular enhancement request to the iTunes Music store. I think that the store's continued success may finally help to convince the record companies to make those things available to us. And now that you can print jewel case inserts directly from iTunes, adding liner notes would be a great feature. - -tc np - Underwater Moonlight, by some old 70's band ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 May 2004 10:55:38 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Those pesky Russians I just found out about allofmp3.com and I gotta say it's pretty amazing.
