It did not, however, bother me enough to get out of bed and clarify the point. > However, I hope for Mr. Wells' sake that Rush kicks ass in whatever > peculiarly Rush-y form and context in which Michael-Wells-pleasing > Rush-ass-kicking may take, and that it's the Best Rush Show Ever! I can verify that I was convinced that people were reading my thoughts, though constructing tinfoil protection didn't occur to me. In fact I was all for SHARING my thoughts. I was fully capable of reading, but thought the almost comatose woman in the hospital bed next to me was enjoying the book as I read. Note that I was not reading out loud, but the normal way. Of course she could absorb what I was reading by some sort of mysterious mechanism that funnelled my thoughts into her brain! I kept looking over at her to see if she was reacting to what was happening in my novel, as I recall it was the latest Alice Munro - she seems unaffected but I put that down to her rather stoic personality. I'm not familiar with the tactics of the gentleman you name here. Perhaps for my edification (and that of anyone else still reading this discussion) you could enumerate some of them. Or if you'd rather not, maybe you can point me to the place where you learned so much about them, so that I can do a little research myself and find out exactly what the heck you're talking about. unless you only brought it up as an attempt to waffle and evade still further. in which case, love on ya baby! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 May 2004 16:41:40 -0400 From: "Stewart C. The whole "mass graves mixed in with pig entrails" association with Pershing would seem to be an urban myth: . That's not to say that it may not have been done by someone else in the Manila campaign. And didn't the original taboo on animal fat on bullets come from British colonial days in India? ISTR the cartridges were sealed with beef dripping. Fegs, Not posting much these days but am trying to stay abreast of world events even in my adopted encased-in-amber island city. But I want to add to this topic - being an American abroad, living abroad, not the tourist bovine, is getting more and more difficult, and at a rather rapid pace! I've been abroad for 3 years now and while I find most Europeans distinguish between government and individual, I am beginning to feel some blanket anti-American attitude, even here in Italy. The anti-American graffiti is on the increase, of course, and calling Bush a "torturer" is the latest but I went to a dinner party the other night and felt a decided stiffness from a few individuals at the table after being asked my nationality. Starting in September I am supposed to be in a position of "cultural ambassador" for America, in Romania. I am really having a tough time with this idea. I'm not the normal American anyway; hating TV, voting, even absentee, never have seen the Simpsons, think Stephen Spielberg is a terrible director, could care less about the cult of the celebrity... But do I want to represent the USA these days? Shit, my family arrived in the New World to farm New Amsterdam (near Wall Street) and with the second Virginia colonies. They moved west with the covered wagons. And I am proud of being a 5th generation Californian. But am I still proud of being an American? This is a question I am wrestling with daily, magnified by living abroad and the prospect of "representing America." My best friend is married to a Bosnian who is also Muslim. He was welcomed in America 12 years ago as a refugee and became a citizen in 2000. Now? He's afraid to have his name spoken over the PA at his work. What is that about? Not the America I know, that's for sure. Just things I am musing about daily. Robyn was on for half an hour, following a modern jazz pianist and a pensioners' rights activist. During the first song he was greeted by a beer can thrown from the balcony, which seemed to unsettle him slightly for a couple of minutes, unsurprisingly. Here's the set list: Robyn with acoustic: Trams Of Old London 1974 52 Stations Then the following with Paul Noble on bass: Meet Me In The Morning Only The Stones Remain (fantastic harmonica part!) Stayin' Alive/Listening To The Higsons medley Public Service Announcement ("Rumsfeld is the Antichrist"... wish I could remember more of the lyrics) It was a strange atmosphere: probably 90% (95%?) of the audience didn't seem to know who he was and whilst he got a good reception (apart from the beer can), it was very different from seeing him at one of his 'own' gigs. Good to have him back though! Charlotte _________________________________________________________________ It's fast, it's easy and it's free.
