Which is to say, totally. Perhaps they do... those are the only two I have, FWIW, and I think they just didn't grab me at the time due to them, well, not being the Pixies, probably. I've had a hard time sussing out when would be a good time to hop back on the FB bandwagon because most of the adherents of his latter day stuff tend to offer me wildly conflicting opinions on which records or tours are "returns to form" or "crap tossoffs"... same problem I have with latter day Bowie, I suppose. Me then Jeff: >>>> Who would be in an analagous point [with Robyn] career-wise right now? John Doe? >>John Wesley Harding? (Who has a novel out apparently, under his real name >>Wesley Stace.) I was thinking of a figure with more of a "band" history than JWH, but if you go by this rubric you could include Billy Bragg (although he did go without releasing any new material for a longer while there than Our Boy Robyn ever has, I think). I should add that one of my personal favorite artists, Kristin Hersh, is actually damned close to the definition I had in mind at this point... can't see her fronting pickup bands per se, but she has done some collaborative-style touring with folks like the aforementioned Doe, Vic Chesnutt, Howe Gelb, and Grant Lee Phillips (half of whom have done similar stints with Robyn). Richard Thompson I'd class as a generation away from Robyn, but the model otherwise holds up pretty damned well; maybe John Cale would be a closer parallel to him. An argument for Jonathan Richman could be posited as well. Maybe Bob Mould? Looking at this list I just get confused as to who among these folks is "more famous" and what kind of criteria might even assist in making such a determination. "Legendary" to folks like us can still equal several flavors of "huh?" to most people. A test should be devised and disseminated among the population to figure this out: throw out a cult legend's name and score him or her based on how many people can name their associated band, any signature song, album, which label(s) dropped them, nation of origin, etc. Or not. >>Never really got into Sebadoh - I liked some of their stuff okay, but >>they never quite did it for me. Weird - every RIYL search doohickey in >>the universe tells me I *should* like 'em more. Ehhh, you're allowed a few of those, so cut yourself that amount of slack. Barlow definitely puts Robyn to shame, and gives Pollard a run for his money, in the "throw everything against the wall and see what sticks" sweepstakes. I have a few Sebadoh/Folk Implosion records but should really distill them down to my own personal best-of some day, so I'm basically with you here. Jeff then Jeff: >>> Excellent stuff - and proves that you don't need to play >>> a bazillion notes to be a kickass lead guitar player. >>I can't think of a truly kickass lead guitarist that does >>play a bazillion notes, actually. The jackoffs who do that >>are just treating music like it's a track meet. Just on principle I thought I might come up with a counterexample, but the point holds up surprisingly well. One could name any number of great lead guitar players who can and occasionally do unleash the bazillions, but I'm at a loss to name one who does so all the time out of some weird sense of apparent obligation. Neil Young once compared his playing to that of Satriani/Malmsteen/etc. by saying his was "more of a giant sandworm thing", which I thought was pretty cool, because, you know, how badass are giant sandworms? It has always been about regime change and using America's military power to enforce a world order deemed favorable to U.S. interests. - Charles V. So, last Sunday, Viv and I were dining on the sidewalk in front of a local slightly swank seafood eatery when a group of just-this-side-of-wealthy hipsters came ambling up the sidewalk toward us from behind Vivien. I noted a funny similarity and thought it was kind of hilarious and pathetic how all those hip types look and dress the same and I said, "Ooh, look! It's Grant Lee Phillips!" because, man, the guy did look like Grant Lee Phillips and that's funny. Viv turned to see and I was hoping for a snicker or guffaw... instead, she said, "Oh, huh. Yeah, he's playing at Berbati's tonight." He then walked past us, gave Viv an odd eye that was maybe a "I recognize her from SOMEWHERE" (due to a conversation they had after one of the GLP/Robyn shows we attended, maybe) and then went into the restaurant. That sure was weird. I'm glad I didn't shout it out. I'll see if her record's in good shape and try to do something with it. It would just be a straight analogue-out-to-disc transfer, though. I don't have the skills or software for mastering, declicking or any of that. Guys, I just told you that Howard Stern is censoring your newsgroup. That's true he is, he even admitted he was lili2 [a primary person who forwards entertainment news to the forum]. I showed you what he was doing to manipulate your group. Bombing you with scanned in newspaper articles, considered a post, but not actually a post. Actually fillers to move YOUR posts around. He is manipulating your thoughts, ideas and opinions. Rick in Oz [ditto], Boomtown and a whole bunch of others I haven't yet told you about. Didn't you notice when your newsgroup slowed down? He had been exposed and didn't know what to do, so he didn't post. And your group slowed down considerably. You're all being HAD. I picked your newsgroup because I figured you guys would be smarter, stronger and better than the run of the mill groups. Right now I'd like to go over to alt.gossip.celebrities and post there. The problem is I can't, he has some computer trick on my computer that stops me. I can only post here right now. I'm going to tell this story, it's not new, it's a bad guy hurting little people. I'm trying to stop that. I'm going to stop that. Look at the people replying about how "Nuts" I am, I'm not nuts, I'm giving you the truth. You may chose to believe it or not, I have no control of that. But, everything I post can be checked out and will prove true. Howard was keeping me off the net entirely. I enlisted THE professionals, the people who invented computers. I think they caught him censoring the WWW, that's why I'm able to post now. They had him and he had to shutdown whatever he was doing to keep me off. He didn't plan on me having help, I think they caught him doing something very illegal.
