I've always had the >>impression that this is sort of a shady, disreputable label. Possibly because I bitch about them occasionally, but Collector's Choice seems to have their hearts in the right place-- they actually seek out oddball records to license and seem to really care, but they simply often screw up or promise a cooler package than they can deliver... they usually cop to the errors and go out of their way to reprint and replace stuff (happened to me with two of their products, the aforementioned Verlaine reissue and a Whisky Hill Singers album before that). You're *probably* thinking of (or understandably conflating CC with) Collectables, home of innumerable single artist-compilations by Nuggets-type bands... the only venue for a lot of music, inevitably mediocre sound and hideous packaging. Two examples which spring to mind immediately are the 13th Floor Elevators "Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye" (dodgy live tape passed off as best-of) and (I think) the so-called "complete recordings" of the Lemon Drops, which has a host of rehearsal tapes and whatnot, but, while including a really cool alternate version of "I Live in the Springtime", does *not* contain the version included on the Nuggets box set itself! Did anyone ever pick up the Rhino Handmade reissue of the same Guadalcanal Diary albums which Collectables had released just a few months previously, for compare-and-contrast purposes (Marc)? Those are probable the night-and-day extremes of boutique reissue labels, but the proximity of their release dates makes me suspect that the same masters became available at the same time. Rhino's looks better from the cover art alone; I assume the notes suck less, too... >>I spent last night being ostracized for wearing short pants. Not one of >>my better stabs at entertainment. Yeah, but at least you weren't *dying*. It is time for shorts in Southern California. Anyone denying this values smugness over comfort. Dunno if it helps to get validation from me, but there it is. Actually, over the past week, I've started working half time at an office that is air-conditioned (as opposed to my current/old one), had a working AC in the living room of my house for the first time in 10 years, and gotten the AC in my car repaired (after 2 1/2 year of non-functionality)... which must mean that about sixty to sevently percent more of my life is air-conditioned this week than last. Thank GOD. Now the only things wrong with my car are the non-functional stereo and, um, the trunk that you can't unlock. Oh, and the one inside door handle that just fell off. And the sun-baked paint job. Oh well... at least I got my Fender Twin Reverb back in working order over the weekend, too. Cheers... Well, I know two doormen who would flatly disagree with you. And a best friend too, for that matter. Ran 9.9 miles on Saturday morning, though in a group at a slower pace. Longest run ever. Woo. This isn't an answer to that question, but I thought you'd like to know that I saw the ISB at the Fleece and Firkin in Bristol 10 days ago. BUT although Mike Heron and Clive Palmer were among those present, Robin Williamson wasn't in the band. The remaining musicians were a keyboard player, a bass guitarist and a woman who played fiddle, cello, recorder, a kind of guitar shaped mandolin and a drum. They were very good except for Clive Palmer's vocals, which wavered and eventually faded away. Mike Heron was very chuffed that the Archbish of Canterbury had included "The Hedgehog Song" among his eight gramophone records on Desert Island Discs. - - Mike Godwin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 May 2004 15:19:26 -0700 From: "Rex.Broome" Subject: Robyn vs. Wagonchrist So I filled up my whole iPod, encompassing a tiny fraction of my record collection, and now I'm trying to burn off non-essential tracks to clear more room. Right now I'm going through some of the mid-90's electronica records on there to eliminate some of the long tracks I consider "filler"... so I was listening through this pretty cool record that's a collaboration between Luke "Wagonchrist" Vibert and pedal steel guitarist BJ Cole. Probably my favorite track on this (which I'm retaining on the iPod) is called "Fly Hawaii", and listening back to it, I suddenly realized something I'd never put my finger on before: the pedal steel line in this song sounds eerily like slowed-down, minor-key version of the riff from "Kingdom of Love"! Anyone else have this record, so they can check and see if I'm just nuts for thinking this? - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 May 2004 16:33:36 -0700 From: "Marc Holden" Subject: re: attn: Pixies contingent Eb pointed out: >At a press conference held Saturday at the Coachella Valley Festival in >Indio, CA , the PIXIES announced that they will play two of this >summer's Lollapalooza festivals. They were much better sounding than when I saw them back in 1991. I'm really really looking forward to the Mesa Ampitheatre show. It's about 3 miles straight down the road from my place. I wonder how long they'll play as the headliner, instead of being limited to a 60 minute set. Still, they played a lot of songs (I remember at least 17), including over half of the Doolittle album. Does anyone know if they are selling the recordings from these additional shows also? I got my Coachella order in before it sold out. Other Coachella standouts included the Flaming Lips (not many songs, but Wayne "rode" the crowd in a giant bubble that "fell from outer space"--he told us to say that), Desert Sessions (w/Mark Lanegan but no PJ Harvey), the Thrills, Kraftwerk (my friend swore they weren't really playing, that they were just at their computers e-mailing each other), Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai, and Radiohead. A very worthwhile weekend overall. I'm really tired today. I drove back to Tempe after the show. I saw what was likely to have been a fatal accident, which took most of the temptation of napping at the wheel right out of the picture. Got home at 5:15 this morning. I had to be at work at 7:30 am and was only 10 minutes late, which is like 15 minutes early for me. I'm working until 10:30 pm tonight, so it's time for more espresso and ginseng. Why do I keep doing this to myself? Because it's worth it, I think. But then not quite as bright and clear as the Lost Dreams versions, then of course LD was a labour of love by band members - shame they didn't simply re-do the first two albums rather than making the compilation that they did. Incidently has anyone heard Artifact? I would nominate Daevid Allen's Death of Rock as having the shoddiest mastering among cds I own. The original EP was not great sounding but the cd is quite horrible - also uses a different version of one of tracks for no obvious reason.
