All you Blossom Toes fans out there might be interested to know that Kevin Westlake's 1976 solo album is once more available from: It's not a great record - Kevin wasn't in the same songwriting league as Jim Cregan and Brian Godding - but if you like that rinky dinky English style it is definitely worth a listen. A bit Stackridge, a bit Kevin Ayers, very seventies. They also have Blossom Toes' stunning "If only for a moment" and some jazz-rock. - - Mike Godwin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Apr 2004 14:36:59 +0100 (BST) From: Michael R Godwin Subject: Re: fegmaniax-digest V13 #111 > Eb flowed: > >Another download recommendation: the new Beck song from the Endless > >Sunshine of the Spotless Mind soundtrack, "Everybody's Gotta Learn > command and the chicken will obey the direction. Surprised that I've never heard of Korgis before. The Korgis were a Bath band, who actually had two UK hits: 'Everybody's gotta learn sometime' and 'If I had you' ("I..... could change the world, if I had you" - remember?). They were an offshoot from Stackridge, consisting of singer-guitarist James Warren and keyboard player Andy Davies. The last I heard, Warren had reformed Stackridge, but Davies was not involved - he played keyboards on the first Tears for Fears tour, but I'm not sure what he has been doing recently. Assuming that "Shins/Fiery Furnaces" are the "two bands" in question, hm, I could have written all that. >on the other hand, i friggin' *love* the new pornographers, the thrills, >the dandy warhols, imperial teen, drive-by truckers (their new songs >especially -- danko/manuel is going to be the song of the year, i think), >and black rebel motorcycle club. so i guess i'm not a *complete* grump. I'm more of a grump, since I'll only second the New Pornographers and Dandy Warhols. I finally got some Drive-By Truckers, and I'm not entirely comfortable with them -- while I consider myself a bona fide hillbilly, there's something so unrepentently rednecked about the DBTs that I cannot make myself love them. Ex-V-Roy Scott Miller is much more the kind of backwoods guy to whom I can relate. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Apr 2004 12:44:42 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: More Pixies is more better. on 4/19/04 10:54 AM, The Mammal Brain at tews@drizzle.com wrote: > on the other hand, i friggin' *love* the new pornographers, the thrills, > the dandy warhols, imperial teen, drive-by truckers (their new songs > especially -- danko/manuel is going to be the song of the year, i think), > and black rebel motorcycle club. so i guess i'm not a *complete* grump. I got The Thrills album a few weeks ago and it's been in heavy rotation ever since. I was a little put off by Feargal Sharkey-like vocals, but it's definitely grown on me. But there they are, suffering > terribly in context with some rather excellent work like "Touch You > Natalie Jane" - oh well! I disagree. One of the things I like about this comp is the juxtaposition between polished and not, earnest and not, etc..., and I don't think the "not" column suffers by comparison at all. Obviously things like the Rainland song, Blatzman's song, and "Natalie Jane" are products of a different set of tools and different concerns from James' stuff, or "Lawns & Industry". But I'm pretty sure everybody here knows that doesn't make the more polished stuff any better. I can't speak for Rex but the impression I get is that he evaluated all the submissions on their own terms, and selected things that, for whatever reason, just *work*. I think that's certainly true of "Lawns and Industry" which to me just sounds right. And I do mean "sounds". Same with "Felt of Judas", "Carrier Pigeon", and several (not all) of the other tracks from the lower end of the "fi" spectrum. The songs I like the most tend to display some kind complimentary relationship between the setting (production, arrangement) and the content (composition, performance). Some things that sound great in a casual, lo-fi setting would sound stupid if you could hear a lot of effort being put in to the recording. And vice-versa, of course. What makes that difference is something I can't define, but I Know It When I Hear It. +brian in New Orleans np: Rainland / "Fort Ashby" over and over again ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Apr 2004 15:50:44 -0700 (PDT) From: Mike Swedene Subject: G4, Pixies, Postal Svc I need a Video card for my G4 (AGP) and the ATI cards are all sold out, probably due to newer models coming out in the next 2 months. No new songs yet, but they are polishing off some old chestnuts and b-sides. I got my tickets to see them in Stewart's neck of the woods (toronto) in November. Postal Service - I saw Death Cab For Cutie a few weeks back in Buffalo. No one knew who they were, because the tickets were like $10 a piece and they played the same little venue robyn played back in 1990. I like them, not a great show due to sound issues. Postal service didn't knock me down when I heard it, but after repeated listenings I like it. signing off to go back to class, Mike np - nothing. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Couldn't help but draw the comparisons to the edginess and energy of A Can of Bees. In the days of punk these we 2 punkish anti punk bands. Both the Soft Boys and Squeeze had lyrics about sex and death. Squeeze was certainly more macho and immature while Robyn's lyrics create more of an image. Wild Sewerage Tickles Brazil just bothers me, but it's an instrumental not unlike an early Soft Boys instro. Ah, I never really enjoy this 1st Squeeze record, but something about the energy just grabbed me last night -the same way Can of Bees does. Huh.
