My brother Mark Summers did the illustration of Bo Diddley, not because he's especially a fan, but he was asked to submit one of him and one of Janis Joplin. (They only printed the Bo Diddley one, someone else's Janis got accepted.) Iggy Pop wrote the text to go with his drawing... some interesting stories in that issue and most of the illustrations are worth looking at. No. (Oh, I suppose she also proved to the rather piggish late-sixties early-seventies RS-type world that women could live as hard as Keith Richards and die as stupidly as those two guys I mentioned - big accomplishment, that.) - ------------------------------- ...Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: crumple zones:: :: harmful or fatal if swallowed :: :: small-craft warning :: ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2004 07:27:22 -0500 From: Dolph Chaney Subject: Re: Rolling Stone special issue At 07:04 AM 4/12/2004, Fortissimo wrote: >I've never understood the fuss over Janis Joplin. Which is to say that, yeah, a lot of her fame is based on her dying. Living artists don't become "legends" or "immortals" based on potential - those two or three albums come out, and they either earn it or turn into Sting. - ------------------------------- ...Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: crumple zones:: :: harmful or fatal if swallowed :: :: small-craft warning :: ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2004 10:21:54 -0400 From: "Bachman, Michael" Subject: RE: I fell in loooovvee with the ac-tressss... It's worth noting that, even though other Elephant 6 acts have achieved more acclaim and popularity, Kevin Barnes seems to be the only one of the gang with serious stamina as a songwriter. Too bad he can't hook up with a better label -- even a more prominent *indie* label would be nice. > I'm really, really enjoying the Franz Ferdinand release. My dad was a huge golf fan, and played left-handed for some peculiar reason (the *only* thing he did left-handed). As a result, his favorite current golfer was southpaw Phil Mickelson, and it always drove him nuts that Mickelson never won one of the major tournaments. Sigh. I hope everyone watched "The Nick & Jessica Variety Hour," last night. Such programming only comes once in a generation. Simply jaw-dropping. The only left-handed thing Phil does is swing a golf club. He learned his golf swing by mirroring the swing of his right-handed swing father, when his dad was teaching him how to swing a golf club. I play bass guitar left-handed. Interesting that you'd say that - because as I was writing my "Down with Janis!" post ;) I was thinking, hey, how come Grace Slick never gets the credit she deserves (other than, sometimes, as a singer) as a songwriter, musician, bandleader, and powerful female holding her own in a band in an era when that was relatively rare? And I think her abysmal work in the '80s - most of which she was, by her own account, probably too drunk to remember - has a lot to do with the decline in her reputation. (See also: Stevie Wonder - although not w/the drinking, to my knowledge - just the putting out of crappy music. Oh - and is there a product on earth Ray Charles hasn't shilled for? Sad, sad, sad - in his case, that he apparently has to do it for the money. There oughta be a government endowment for people who've made music that good, so they don't have to do ads for the goddamned state lottery...) - ------------------------------- ...Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: "In two thousand years, they'll still be looking for Elvis - :: this is nothing new," said the priest. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Apr 2004 21:40:00 -0400 From: "Stewart C.
