Ah. I actually have a solution for this one. Back when I lived in Paris, which would be around the time of Humpty Dance Mania, I would occasionally pick up a free music weekly called L'Affiche, which had decent interviews and reviews and such, but also a feature in each issue that presented a translation of a popular English-language song into French. One issue featured the Humpty Dance. Reading those lyrics in French will unquestionably drive the original version from one's mind, primarily because it's impossible to imagine that loping bassline behind such an ungainly collection of bons mots. The sharing of information is one of the basic foundations of social behavior and one of the primary driving forces of civilization. If a person has a piece of information that could be useful to another person, failing to pass that information along is anti-social at best. A belief that MUST be kept from people who do not meet some arbitrary obligation (say, paying a fee of cash) not related to their need or desire is sociopathic, in my opinion. Proprietary software requires a person to agree to a (currently) legally binding contract that says the user will not share that information with those who could use it. It's a compulsion to sociopathy (which is just a simpler way of typing "sociopathic behavior patterns"). In re-reading my reply, I don't think I was as clear as I could have been. I was hoping to spur a discussion with Eb about the issues related to dialup versus a more permanent, faster connection so that we might be able to find a solution that improved his situation without incurring any of the negative consequences he perceives right now. That is to say, I think it's possible that his situation coud be improved at no or very little cost and perhaps he just doesn't know it or I don't know the situation in his area or in his home. A discussion would clear that up and we'd both know more and perhaps something better could come of it.
