I just got back from Minneapolis, where last night I saw the Wrens - oddly, considering I've been a fan since _Silver_, for the first time. And I cannot recommend them highly enough. Even if you have reservations about the records, live, they're just utterly possessed, and bring chaos, delicacy, power, and control to the songs, along with an enthusiasm exuding sheer gratitude, that their work is finally being recognized by more than a handful of people. Plus, Charles Bissell is surely one of rock's underrated guitarists: he pulls chord voicings out of his guitar that I would have sworn were made by two or three guitarists. And the three main singers (Bissell, brothers Kevin and Greg Whelan) have one of the best vocal blends around. I'm such a big dork, though: I of course could come up with nothing to say to anyone in the band that wouldn't have sounded fanboy-ish or self-congratulatory ("hey - I was reviewing your records back in '96..."). The sum total of my conversation with members of the Wrens? Jerry MacDonnell: "Are you in the line for the bathroom?" Me: "No, I'm just standing here." MacDonnell: "Thanks." Then I kissed him on the cheek and gave him a sculpture made from an old gum wrapper - I think it depicted an industrial waste dump, in honor of the Wrens' home state of New Jersey. - ------------------------------- ...Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: Solipsism is its own reward :: :: --Crow T. If so, I apologize for the duplication...] I was in Whole Foods this afternoon waiting in line at the checkout and was perusing the magazine selection and thought, "God, that face is familiar." It's been so long since I've seen Robyn on the cover of a magazine I did a triple-take. He's gracing the cover of the February/March issue of MAGNET. Check the scans of the cover and interior pics here http://ochremedia.com/grabitnow/magnet If I can get around to it (and get the OCR software to work better than it wants to) I'll post a full transcript. Right now about 1/3 of the article is there. Two of the scans are rather large. I forgot to resize them, so enjoy the uber quality. - -ferris. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 2004 09:38:46 +0100 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Where exactly is that? - --On Montag, 15. When I was done, I still had a few of the 30 minutes of internet time the hotel allows it's guests to use for free, so I decided to check the information on the show Robyn is playing in Tucson on March 26th. They finally posted the show info and poster art ($8 in advance, $10 day of the show). http://www.hotcong.com/club/ I started to place my ticket order when I noticed I was running over my time a bit. After a couple of minutes, a guy came thru the door to the computer room, and I told him I'd just be a moment. I went thru a couple of computer screens, paid, etc. Afterward, I quickly closed down the windows and apoligized to this patient person for making him wait. I reopened the system onto a clean screen for him and said,"Here you go, it's all yours." "No, it's not..." "...?..." "I'm James." "Dignan." There was a brief stunned silence as my slightly alcohol afflicted brain cells processed this unexpected news. It was like the end of the Holy Grail, '...at last, our quest is at an end...' I was waiting for the French taunters to come and wreck everything. 'Speachless' would be putting it mildly. I'm not sure if I put two coherent words together this evening, but I sure did talk, eventually. James and I had some beverages in the bar and chatted a while. I ran to my hotel room and brought some things that various list members had sent. I think he liked the couple of items that were sent down, and he might have even seemed a bit surprised about it. I hope I didn't talk his ears off, but I 'm afraid I might have. I felt like my brain had been through a food processor. James politely put up with this aural assault, and even agreed to get together tomorrow afternoon to look around Christchurch a bit. More news as it happens... While I've known he's been kicking around those venues, I'm a bit curious if he's ever offered an apology for the homophobia, anti-semitism, and misogyny running through even his best work (and I don't deny tha PE was a great band). Admittedly the misogyny was sort of repudiated by some later songs, but if I recall correctly Professor Griff was brought back on board for at least one of the PE reunions, and that obviously wasn't an effort on Chuck's part to regain any musical muscle. I do think of D. as a positive force in the media world, and I honestly don't know how/if he's addressed any of this stuff in recent appearances or work. I just recall the positivism of PE in their heyday always being tempered with some of those retrograde tendancies. At the time it was an interesting problem with which to wrestle intellectually among your friends and classmates; in retrospect it just feels like a problem. Eddie: >>and yet...the only movie i can think of that elicited such consistent and >>magnitudinous laughs on first viewing is Dr. Strangelove (certain >>episodes of Family Guy also merit this distinction). I do love Strangelove, although I haven't watched it to death as a lot of people have... but, and I know this always elicits strong opinions both ways, I just can't abide Family Guy. The laugh-value of any single gag on that show is, for me, totally undermined by the way it just doesn't hang together. And remember... Went fairly well, especially considering it was our first show ever. I had never played live before, so I was a little nervous at first. My left hand (I play lefty) was not doing exactly what my brain was telling it to, etc. But I got more comfortable by the end. In the set was the Hello Song from the Magic Garden, What Love Is from the Dead Boys / Rocket From The Tombs, and Sex Bomb from Flipper (on which I'm playing bass, not singing). If anyone wants to hear any of it, I have a recording at http://www.unix.vi/audio/GeekFarm/ .
