I'm intrigued about that one... I'd be remiss if I didn't add that I've had similarly positive reunion experiences with Television, X, the Go-Betweens, Bauhaus, Throwing Muses, the Church, and of course... the Soft Boys. And again more I'm probably forgetting. Most of the recent configurations of Love have been well-received, too. And I'll be damned if I'm missing Mission of Burma or the Pixies this year. Watching dead bands can be more rewarding than you'd expect. Seems like I saw the Stones once, too... can't remember how that went... jBj: >>It warms my heart to know that there is someone else out there who >>digs and appreciates Stew. Quite a few of us around here, I think, most of whom have already raised their hands to be counted. It's time for me to dig out "Something Deeper" for a few more spins... definitely some good songs, if a little undercooked in the arrangements. I immediately thought of Stew when I heard the news about Ken this morning, too... >>I have all three Stew albums, but I've never heard TNP. What do they sound >>like? Stew but more rockin? Living Colour meets the Black Bob Dylan? More the first than the second, but that's not quite it. The first two (Post-Minstrel Syndrome and Joys & Concerns) are really terrific... the live band, which has kind of fallen by the wayside, really kicks-- the drummer is great. There's a bit more of a power-pop feel in places, but the lyrics and arrangements are pretty sophisticated right out of the gate. I'd always recommend those two as the place to start, particularly for RH fans. Of course, I've been wrong before... - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Feb 2004 14:53:50 -0800 (PST) From: John Barrington Jones Subject: Re: Pazz On Fri, 13 Feb 2004, Eb wrote: > Disgusted to see the Phonies of Wayne at #3. The band is basically one guy - Stephen Manning - plus a drummer and whoever's in the room and can play bass, but they write brilliant songs, in a style not too distant from Robyn at his most Beatle/Smith-y, and Manning's lyrics are clever and witty in ways that I think would appeal to folks here. She performed her older, superior material with no energy at all, like it was a chore. Horrible performance. The Lips were, on the other hand, bizarre and fantastic. Empress Heidi is holding court with ten other celebrated "Sports Illustrated" alumnae, including Cheryl Tiegs, on pages 178 and 179. Why pages 178 and 179? Because Archangel Heidi is now six months pregnant with our daughter: 178 days is approximately six lunar months. She is wearing a $196 swimsuit. Why 196? Because 196 = 14 * 14: We consummated our affair on the 14th day of July, 2003. Why Cheryl Tiegs? (Cheryl is directly above Heidi in the "Sports Illustrated" Hall of Fame photograph.) Because by following Cheryl's diet tips I am now down to my ideal weight, 157 lbs, a number that displays the coordinates of Heidi's hometown, Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, in reverse: E 7 Meridian and N 51 Parallel. Bergisch Gladbach is not just the place where Heidi saw the light of the Sun for the first time, but also the place where we consummated our affair under cloudless skies, in the light of the Full Moon. About one year ago, on February 7, 2003, Heidi had said that she had been reading Homer's "Odyssey" and had found it to be a "wunderschoene Liebesgeschichte", a "wonderfully beautiful love story". The "Odyssey" describes the divine love between Odysseus and the Goddess Athena. After Alexander the Great, Odysseus is the most popular hero for Greek men, like myself, and Athena inspired, guided, and protected Odysseus in the Trojan War and his ten-year adventures afterwards. Heidi had portrayed Athena in the centerfold of the 2001 "Sports Illustrated" swimsuit issue and had been to Greece, my fatherland, for that year's photoshoot. That was at the beginning of our affair and ever since that time she has been my Goddess, my Athena. The name "Heidi" sounds like the word for "caress" in Greek, my native tongue, and I have felt Archangel Heidi's caresses guiding me, admonishing me, and thanking me for a long time now. Looking at her long and elegant fingers in the "Sports Illustrated" Hall of Fame photograph makes my skin tingle. One of the greatest pleasures in my life is looking at her photographs and choosing one for my computer's monitor, to keep me company for a few days. My selection for today, St. Valentine's Day, is this one: http://www.heidiklum.de/do/Grusskarte/PopUp.asp?bild=bikini/lib6pic25.jpg ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2004 15:27:10 -0500 From: "Maximilian Lang" Subject: RE: Soft Boys 1/16/03 Chiari, Italy bit torrent at sharingthegroove >From: "Christopher Carville" >Subject: Soft Boys 1/16/03 Chiari, Italy bit torrent at sharingthegroove >Date: Wed, 11 Feb 2004 23:41:37 -0500 >Here is another excellent sounding show for you all: >Soft Boys >Chiari, Italy >1/16/03 >soundboard recording > ? > cdr > eac > shn >(likely DAT sbd recording) >cd1 >I Love Lucy >Hear My Brane >Tonight >Kingdom Of Love >Queen Of Eyes >My Mind Is Connected... >Each Of Her Silver Wands >Insanely Jealous > >cd2 >Airscape >Mr. Kennedy >Sudden Town >He's A Reptile >When I Was A Kid >Anglepoise Lamp >Underwater Moonlight >Bells Of Rhymney >Vegetable Man >I Wanna Destroy You > > Here's the link: >http://www.sharingthegroove.org/msgboard/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41943 This seems to be dead already? any chance of someone opening a window?
