I might have been out of concert money at that point--I saw the Residents, Kevn Kinney w/Peter Buck, and Pylon that month. Thornton" Subject: Grammys I attended the Grammys telecast on Sunday at Staples Center in LA, where the LA Lakers, Clippers and Kings all play, as well as the "after party" put on by the Grammy organization at the Biltmore hotel. Sitting in the audience for the telecast was an interesting experience. I've never really been part of an audience for any sort of television show or event, so it was cool to see how it was all run, organized and accomplished. Our seats for the telecast were right next to the stage on the stage-left side, just a few rows from the "floor." If anyone watched the Grammys on television, so may have noticed these large semi-circle backdrops which they would use to hide all the bands and their gear and props while artists on the other stage were performing, or while someone was actually presenting or making a speech. We were right at the edge of one of these backdrops, so we were able to see everything going on behind it, but it did block our view of the performances at stage-right. And we pretty much got a sideview of all the presenters. However, we were able to look directly at the faces of all the famous people on the floor and see their reactions to everything going on on-stage. We could also had a great view of the big TelePrompTer, and were able to follow along and see how often presenters deviated from the written script. It flashed red whenever they wanted someone to "Please Wrap Up." I wish Richard Marx actually paid attention to it. More than a few people had their lyrics running up there, too. The kid sitting next to me kept pointing out different people in the audience, including Tarantino who was head-banging like a maniac while the Black Eyed Peas were playing. Behind the semi-circle, we watched everyone on that side set-up and goof around before they played. I was on the side with the White Stripes, Outkast, Sara McLachlan, the Dave Matthews/Sting/Vince Gill Beatles tribute, Beyonce, and Justin Timberlake, so I was just a few rows away from their performances. I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to see the Foo Fighters, or very much of Prince, except when he made it out to the front of the stage. The White Stripes and Outkast were pretty fucking amazing up that close. Walking into and around the Staples Center - they shuffled the "regular folk" in beside the main red carpet - I passed within a few feet of Billy Bob Thornton, BB King, Hilary Duff, Weird Al and Hugh Hefner with five playboy bunnies - and caught brief glimpses of other celebrities. My biggest complaint about the Grammys show this year was that it was far too focused on the historical, rather than any innovations or new voices in the past year in music. Many of the awards for this year were handed out before the telecast, and too much on-air time was taken up with tributes and lifetime achievement type awards. I won't even get into my long list of problems with particular winners and nominees, but it does seem that a lot of the Grammy people are extremely out of touch with what sort of music holds any sort of artistic merit or, in many cases, with even what is popular. The 40th anniversary of the Beatles coming to America isn't really THAT important - a ground-breaking event to be sure, but it is something we should focus on every 10 years? I'm glad that I finally got to see Prince live, sort of, but at the same time, did he or Earth Wind & Fire or P. Funk (another group I'm happy that I DID see) really make any significant contributions to music this year? It seems to me that the time would have been better spent presenting other artists that really had some impact in 2003. And however one feels about Dave Matthews, it seems like it would have been a lot more appropriate to have him play "Gravedigger" than a Beatles song with Sting. People sitting around me were vocally asking if they were even going to give out any awards. There seemed too few handed out in comparison to the number of songs played. The Grammy After-Party was packed. It was held in something 10 different rooms on three levels at the Biltmore downtown, catered by all these different big-name chefs from around LA. While I was getting served cheese by Harrison Ford's son - he had a restaurant in LA called Cheese From Spain - - Wolfgang Puck cut in front of me in line and started talking to him. There was really no one famous at the After-Party, they all went to record company parties instead. I saw Steve Vai walking around, but I think that was about it. But, the food and drinks were free, so I had fun. I was pretty wiped-out at work on Monday, though. My friend Tom was playing at Sai Sai, a Japanese restaurant in the Biltmore. He shared a green room with Steve "Silk" Hurly and Paul Oakenfold, who I don't think ever showed up, so I took one of the three gift bags - just full shampoo samples and crap like that - out of the room. They did give me a "Talent" badge, rather than a regular "guest" pass, so I was able to bypass some lines at security and such. They gave out free Grammy Nominee CDs out when we left Staples. I have to admit, I've really been getting into the Black Eyed Peas song, the one by 50 Cent and the track by Eminem. I took some pictures of Tom playing, which he or I will put up at some point. I'm probably forgetting some details right now, too... I TiVo'd it and spent most of the time FF'ing through it all. I thought The White Stripes kicked ass, but the other things I was looking forward to fell flat. Both Beatles tributes were lame, and the Warren Zevon tribute didn't do anything to show what a unique and talented guy he was. They just made him out to be some sappy guy who had a lot of famous friends and died of cancer. I didn't realize until the next day that The White Stripes won two Grammy's and the Foo Fighters and Jeff Beck won one each. Hm, well, there was that bit of news last month about Robyn recording with Gil'n'Dave here in Nashville for several days, as well as a new song about (presumably lower-case) television in his Bluebird Cafe set. I thought it was a pretty big deal even if I hadn't been the one reporting on all that, but it was so little commented upon that it must not count as "info."
