(Beatle ehhh-ers need not apply) I've long thought that "Somewhere apart" was Robyn's most Lennonesque song. Similarly, although primarily a gimme for the Byrds, Ringo could have had a fair stab at "Sleeping knights of Jesus". Today, while listening to a mix tape of RH songs in the car, i realised that "Alright yeah" would have made a great song for George harrison, right from the guitar glissandos of the intro through. In fact it almost sounds Harrison influenced, especially the single version (which was what was on the mix tape and which is, I think, slightly different in production to the ME version). The question is... are there songs by Robyn which are more like individual Beatles than these? And what is his most McCartneyesque number - which could you most hear Macca cover? I've discounted "Flesh no. 1" as sounding most like the band as a whole (and deliberately so - it became more Beatlesque as it went on). But what about the four individuals? Something, at least. Uh...First, if Buffett is the "biggest-selling artist" of anything, that only proves there is no God. But according to AMG, Buffett released a passel of albums on MCA - a major label - up to 1999, and since then has released a series of "live in..." cash-ins to his rabid posse of inane faux-tropical present and former fratboys and -girls. Doesn't sound very "indie" to me: he made his career on a major label, and now is milking it. But of course, really, "indie rock" has become a style, not a mere description - rather like "power pop" is so called even if it's the last thing but popular (which, of course, it usually is). - ------------------------------- ...Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb :: --Batman ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Feb 2004 12:56:56 -0600 From: "Fortissimo" Subject: never mind... PIXIES ANNOUNCE NORTH AMERICAN CONCERTS The PIXIES have confirmed a series of North American concert dates, it is announced today. The group will kick off the eleven-city headline dates in Winnipeg, Canada on Wednesday, April 14, traveling through central and western Canada, then down the U.S. west coast, ending on Saturday, May 1 where they will co-headline (with Radiohead and Kraftwerk) the first night of the Coachella Music & Arts Festival held just outside of Palm Springs, CA. Those lucky enough to get tickets to the Pixies "warm up" dates will be able to see the band in intimate venues, making these reunion concerts that much more special. As was confirmed last week, the Pixies, acclaimed as the most influential pioneer of the late '80s alt/rock movement, whose five albums and six years together blazed the path for groups like Nirvana, Radiohead and Pearl Jam to rise to superstardom, have decided to reunite and will share the stage together as a band for the first time since before they disbanded in 1993. All four members of the original line-up - Frank Black/vocals, guitar; Joey Santiago/guitar; Kim Deal/bass; and David Lovering/drums - are currently in Los Angeles rehearsing for the tour. In addition to the reunion tour, fans can look forward to the release of "Pixies," a DVD featuring eight of the band's classic videos, a live concert from a London show in 1988, the definitive Pixies documentary entitled "Gouge," and "behind the scenes" footage. And if this isn't enough, a "best of" album with the working title "Wave of Mutilation - Best of Pixies" will also be released. No confirmed release date has been set for either the DVD or CD, but 4AD/The Beggars Group will have both in stores sometime this year. The complete itinerary for the Pixies' "warm up" dates is listed below. There are no plans for additional dates to be announced on this tour. The 2003... erm, 2005 Original Fegmusicians Compilation is complete! By which I mean I have a master with all the tracks in the order that sounds good to me, and all the liner notes whacked together, and artwork selected... basically, all the content is good to go. First question: Who wants one? I have freebies slated for all the contributors (who will unfortunately need to remind me of their snail mail addy's since I thoughtlessly discarded the packages in which the submissions arrived), but I otherwise need a basic count on how large a run I need to print on these things. Let me know if you're interested... I'll happily slide copies to non-participants for trades or oddball compilations of stuff you think I might like. Totally negotiable and hey... I'm easy. Next question, minor solicitation for aid... is anyone interested in the relatively easy job of printing up the booklets for these bad boys? I've got the spine and trays handled on my end, but don't have a nice color printer to do the cover/booklet. As mentioned, I have the artwork and liner notes basically prepped so it would be an easy assembly and easier on the eyes than what I'd eventually come up with. Any takers? Sadly, though, I started seeing them after their initial performance-art phase in which they'd all dress as nuns or Steve Kramer would perform tarred and feathered. But even sans theatrics they were great. I hope I still have my tape of their song-version of Lear's "Owl and the Pussycat", which they played on Prairie Home Companion in '87 or '88. Killer tune they set it to-- I still sing it to myself. If yez guys ever see a vinyl copy of the Totally Nude LP, grab it, 'cause it's solid all through, way beyond just the title track.
