If that happens she'll probably just lean across the pillow and say "Don't worry, honey, that's just Thornton." She's good about these things. So I saw X last night. Damn. I've seen John Doe solo several times over the past few years and he's been really great, just a natural at the whole troubador thing-- he was the highlight of the Exile Follies, especially with Kristin Hersh "Exene-ing" along but... man, I'd just... forgotten... the sheer physicality of the guy when he rocks out. The band was great. Exene's seen better days, but sounded great... always a pleasure to hear DJ Bonebrake... and Billy Zoom... well, I'm quite sure he's autistic or something, but he's almost frighteningly well-preserved and still makes it look easy. Great set, missing only a few of the keys songs ("Nausea", "Johnny Hit and Run Paulene"), which could have been remedied if the show hadn't ended at the very-un-punk-rock time of 11:27. But there you go. Anyways, I was wearing my Lucinda t-shirt, although it was barely discernible since I had a sort of corduroy overshirt obscuring it... but as the crowd was thinning out, one of the prime movers from the mosh pit passed by and glanced at me and said, "Lucinnnnnndaaaa". So there's my report on the state of punk rock. - -rX, Los Angeles ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Feb 2004 11:50:53 -0800 From: "Rex.Broome" Subject: The Real New Outkast LP (Formerly Country Roads) Just checking the Amazon listing for The Real New Fall LP (Formerly Country on the Click) and I noticed that... A Chapter 11 filing for protection from creditors by MTS would cap a long period of financial distress for privately held Tower, a chain of nearly 100 stores located mainly in the United States that sell music and video entertainment in various formats. The Chapter 11 fling will involve a major debt-for-equity swap that would likely switch control of the company from the founding Sacramento, California-based Solomon family to creditors that include bondholders and banks, sources said. Like other retailers in the recorded entertainment industry, Tower suffers from stiff competition from mass market retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and high costs from retail leases. Digital downloading and file copying has hammered sales and led to widening losses, the company has said. The bankruptcy filing is likely to happen within the next week in Delaware, barring last minute hitches or objections from creditor groups working to hammer out the "prepackaged" bankruptcy plan. Most creditors appear to have agreed to the plan, sources said. The plan, which must be approved by a bankruptcy judge, won't involve significant store closings or employee layoffs, or even a liquidation, as some feared. But some observers say the long-term future of the glitzy store chain founded in 1960 is clouded, particularly due to competition from digital downloading, a medium that doesn't require expensive retail locations. "How do you compete with free?" asked William Brandt, chief executive of restructuring firm Development Specialists Inc., referring to competition from Internet music downloading. "They need to look for an industry-wide solution to the problem which they failed to lead. A better solution has to be found." Tower teetered toward bankruptcy last year when it defaulted on $5.2 million in coupon payments on a $110 million bond issue. It then hired investment bank Jefferies & Co. to help negotiate with bondholders and Los Angeles-based Greif & Co. to help find buyers under a forebearance agreement from lenders. The year before, it sold its top-performing Japanese division for $129 million, but the sale failed to stem a loss of sales due to shifting consumer demands. In a regulatory filing last April, MTS reported debt of $441.9 million, including $194.5 million in bank and bond debt, along with $247.4 million in operating leases. Sales for the nine months to April 2003 fell 9 percent to $429 million, while losses rose 47 percent to $36.3 million, said MTS in the filing. BFD, the way I see it. I hate Tower. They pay their employees >shit, treat them like shit, and overcharge for CDs. I have mixed feelings. They crushed some of the better local record stores around here. They are very close to my house which is a major convience factor. More good local stores have popped up of late with outstanding prices, if limited selection. It is nice to have a large store where you can wander around for a while and browse. They have decent prices when they have sales, which has been less and less over the past 5 years or so. Snowboarder Hurt During Letterman Stunt (NEW YORK) A snowboarder performing a stunt for David Letterman's late-night talk show veered off a ramp outside the show's theater and fell 25 feet to the ground Thursday, officials and witnesses said. The 30-year-old woman was hospitalized in stable condition, fire department spokesman Sean Johnson said. Witnesses said the woman, whose name wasn't immediately released, made two successful jumps on the U-shaped ramp, set up on 53rd Street outside the Ed Sullivan Theater, and then fell off the ramp after landing a third time. "She came down at an angle and she just went off the side of the ramp and landed on her back," said Dave Riddle, a tour bus driver from Orlando, Fla., who saw the 5 p.m. stunt. "It was chaos. They just all ran to her, took her snowboard off. She hit hard, bless her heart." A spokeswoman from CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman" had no immediate comment. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Feb 2004 19:46:08 -0800 From: Eb Subject: Oh, never mind.... The singer/guitarist, Eleanor, was having throat problems, but they only really showed up when she was talking. She sounded great when she was singing. Her brother Matt, keyboards/guitar, was a really nice guy, and he went out of his way to try to remember the names of the people he talked to. He told us that they plan to swing through the area again in a few months, playing with the Shins. I'm really looking forward to that one. It was a really great show--lots of new arrangements for their songs. I just got back a little while ago from seeing David Bowie. Honestly, I wasn't expecting as good a show as it wound up being. I had seen him many times before, and the last time I saw him was a weaker show than usual (the Outside tour with Nine Inch Nails). David sounded great, and the song selection was pretty impressive. If you get a chance, see him on this tour. Time for sleep, Marc If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."
