Nothing like Donut Queen on Burnside (is that what it's called?) or the newly openned and blazingly glorious Voodoo Donut on 2nd Avenue downtown (where you can get a red jelly filled person-shaped voodoo doll donut, a penis and scrotum shaped creme-filled monster, the Maple Trailblazer Blunt with red sprinkles at one end, a delicious cake donut with vanilla frosting dipped in astronaut-friendly Tang powder -- the Tangfastic!, and altogether excellent traditionals and minor variations on traditionals like the maple old-fashioned -- and, of couse, the speed donut eating contest midnight on the first Friday of each month). I find them edible, but distinctly inferior to Dunkin Donuts, let alone some of the excellent donuts (or doughnuts) made by a local bakery. Krispy Kreme: the donut you like because everyone else likes it. When Krispy Kreme opened up a few miles from my house, the first one in the San Diego, people waited overnight to get the first batch. Of course, they could've driven a few hours up to LA and back and saved a lot of time. >Yeah, same problem here. They're really terrible. I wouldn't go so far as to call the pastry "terrible," but I've had much, much better from local mom-and-pop doughnut shops in my area. Definitely overhyped. Nowhere near as good as Dunkin, yeah... I certainly miss that from the days when I was going to Boston all the time. There are no Dunkin Doughnuts around here at all. I do like watching the raw doughnuts floating along the river of grease in the Krispy Kreme shops, though. Hate to think of it that way, but what a sweet sounding guitar. Years of abuse, cracked finish, hole drilled in the side to install the Barkus-Barry (sp?), but, dude. The existence of that guitar has always prevented me from shelling out for a truly nice acoustic of my own. I still get excited when a warm batch of KK's shows up in the break room, but nothing beats a dunkah and a cawfee regulah from Dunkin's. It's always the first place we hit when we visit Boston. Of course, whenever you're in San Jose, you owe it to yourself to visit Lou's Living Donut Museum. Yep: blarrgh. Way too sweet (it's all th' dextrose, y'see; you get a massive blood-sugar hit almost instantly) and no texture. They also stay worryingly fresh the second day. And yes, folks were queueing up (or the media claimed they were) when the first KK opened in Mississauga. Mississauga's a total hole, so donuts work well there. But you poor dears thinking that DD is all that. I would rather eat glazed PU insulation than a DD donut when I have the choice of Country Style, Tim Hortons or Coffee Time. We love our donuts here. A meal deal means you get a donut with. I still think my favourite ones come from Missouri, though. Drive-In Donuts just off Rt 66 in St Louis do Blueberry Sour Cream Glazed that's amazing. Lamar's do a Sour Cream Glazed which has fondant icing. Mmmm. Ugh. But he actively disliked Krispy Kreme. His standard complaint was something along the lines of "There's nothing to them! If you squeeze one in your hand, it shrinks into nothing!" Heh. I like Krispy Kreme, but I don't really think of their stuff as "donuts." It's like they're...something else. Donuts can be a meal -- Krispy Kreme donuts are more like snack food. :) Eb (actually, I'm more of an apple-fritter guy) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jan 2004 19:05:38 -0800 From: Tom Clark Subject: A Confession and A Happy Ending I just wanted to pass along a personal note to everyone, since I consider many of you good friends (even Eb ), and I thought you'd like to know. As you know, I left my position at Apple in 2000 after a good run of almost ten years. I left to join some close friends who were doing a cool startup that was going to change the world and make us all unbelieveably rich. Well, that feeling lasted about a year until the founder went psycho and ended up selling us to a company that was developing a similar product and had way deeper pockets (those pockets belonging to one Mr. Paul Allen). Anyway, my confession today is that I was laid off last October and have spent the past three months hanging out at home with the wife and kid. I guess I never announced this when it happened because I was somewhat embarrassed. Then after a while it just seemed useless to say anything at all. The good news is that as of this coming Monday, I will once again be an employee of Apple. The position opened up in November, but between vacations, holidays, and the MacWorld expo, it took them a while to get the paperwork taken care of. I signed the offer yesterday and pushed to start ASAP. I'm really excited about going back. I had been looking for an opening there for almost two years, but the semi-annual retention bonus (aka "Golden Handcuffs") at my previous company kept me from looking too hard. It was only until I was forced to look for a new gig that I actually took it seriously. So there you go. I'm a happy guy again. - -tc ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jan 2004 22:07:49 -0500 From: "Grunty" Subject: Re: Every year I say I'm not gonna bother, and every year I cave. .. i always liked Krispy Kremes, but Dunkin Donuts were way better. i say "were", because i can't have sugar anymore. i miss a good jelly donut or bavarian creme filled, sometimes. that is all. Bleargh (that's my spelling). The thing about Krispy Kreme is that they're the White Castle of donuts: they're all about multiples and instant gratification of basic gustatory pleasure centers (sugar/grease in the case of Krispy Kremes, grease and...I dunno what the hell that flavor is...for White Castles). So comparisons to more substantial donuts is as misguided as comparing a White Castle to, say, a big juicy 1/2-pound bar burger slathered with bacon, cheese, and barbecue sauce. I gained five pounds just writing this message. - ------------------------------- ...Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com/ :: crumple zones:: :: harmful or fatal if swallowed :: :: small-craft warning :: ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jan 2004 00:01:17 -0800 From: Eb Subject: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3379287383 Cheesiest.
