I'm not a huge fan of Welch's solo stuff either, but she's got a pretty voice and I really enjoyed her appearances on the "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack and Jay Farrar's "Sebastopol," as well as "Heartbreaker." I'd love to hear what she, Robyn, and Rawlings get up to. (I can't defend anything Adams has done recently, but >"Heartbreaker" is a damn fine record.) I should amend my usual anti-Ryan Adams ranting to say that HEARTBREAKER is the album of his that I like best -- it seems less ripped off than his other stuff, and its main problems are that it's almost 100% midtempo stuff (a sure "put Miles to sleep" ingredient) and (related to the first point) it's at least 15 minutes too long. Gil and Dave do a great job backing Adams, plus in the album-opening argument about Morrissey, Dave is 100% correct. The stuff that Adams & the Esquires (i.e., Gil'n'Dave'n'drummer as rock band) did at the show in 2000 I mentioned earlier sounded like the Dream Syndicate in swamp-rock mode, or CCR crossed with Sonic Youth: bluesy, distorted as all-get-out, snarly, mean. This was a few weeks before HEARTBREAKER's release, but Adams said that he and Gil'n'Dave wrote all those songs in the prior week, and none of them were on the album. I was so utterly disgustipated with GOLD (which also didn't contain any of 'em) that I haven't bothered with all the ROCK 'N' ROLL/LOVE IS HELL releases, but I am a wee bit curious to know if any of the songs from that show ended up on those puppies. later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jan 2004 16:43:28 -0500 From: "Grunty" Subject: Re: reap i know the words to the damn thing..............lol how do you think i feel? : P Grunty DaWarthawg gruntydawarthawg@verizon.net > Randy Vanwarmer. > > Everyone who recognizes the name (like me), feel embarrassed. > > Ack. When Elliott Smith's girlfriend claimed his family "knew the truth" that the late singer/songwriter's death in October was a suicide, she may have assumed too much. A lawyer representing Smith's estate issued a statement on Wednesday (January 14) stating that no one should speak for Smith's family regarding his death, which continues to be investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department. "Elliott's family has every confidence that the ongoing investigation will determine the actual circumstances of Elliott's death," the statement provided by attorney Conrad Rippy read. "Until such time as their investigation has concluded, however, and especially in light of the recently published coroner's report, neither Elliott's family nor anyone else can claim to know 'the truth' about Elliott's death, and any statement to the contrary mischaracterizes the family's position." The statement is in response to an interview Smith's girlfriend Jennifer Chiba gave to MTV News on Friday, a day after the Smoking Gun (www.thesmokinggun.com) posted the entire coroner's report online (see "Elliott Smith's Girlfriend Insists No Involvement In Death"). The presence of cuts that appeared to be consistent with defensive wounds and the claim that Chiba had at one point "refused to speak with detectives," two occurrences that were not publicized until the report surfaced, may have presented Chiba in a new light to some. Although she said she had not been questioned recently by police, Chiba nonetheless felt like a suspect, if only in the public's perception. "His sister and his parents and everyone close to him knows the truth," Chiba said, "so I'm not worried about it." The Smith family's statement closed by noting that the family will have no further comments on the investigation, and they would appreciate the public "respecting our privacy during this time of grief." Rippy specifically represents Smith's father, who lives in Portland, Oregon; his mother, who lives in Denver; and his half-sister Ashley, a resident of Los Angeles. Elliott Smith died October 21 from two penetrating stab wounds to the chest. A coroner's report completed December 31 could not determine whether the wounds were self-inflicted (see "Cause of Elliott Smith's Death Still Unclear, Coroner Says; No Illegal Drugs Found"). ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jan 2004 14:09:49 -0800 (PST) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: maybe karma is turning around in 2004 cmb adams wrote: > Jeff Dwarf wrote > > Furries are not quite as creepy as straight-edgers > > though. > > I'm not sure I agree. > what about "equally creepy, but in different ways"? > > the furries I've met have by and large been creepy > in a comic-book-guy-from-the-simpsons kind of way. > > the straightedges have been more creepy in a punks- > pretending-to-be-gandhi-with-kinda-fascist-overtones- > because-their-parents-were-jerks kind of way. Thankfully, I don't knowingly know any furries. That said though, as weird as they seem to be, at least they are in touch with their basic human nature, albeit in a rather, erm, peculiar way. I find that sort of kink far less creepy that the sort of neo-fascist asceticism of straightedges. I don't really wanna hang with either though. > of the two, I relate better to the second, but find > it more creepy. ===== "Life is just a series of dogs." -- George Carlin __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I have had a good few weeks CD-wise. First Bill Rooney sends me "Star for Bram", "Side Three", and "Luxor" (all excellent - many thanks B!). And then I receive a surprise parcel containing Snail's albums "Psychodelicate" and "last.dog.in.space" (very good! Many thanks M!). If you don't know the earlier album ("Psychodelicate"), then it's more acoustic-rock in feel than Soft Boys stuff, for the most part, although it's the feel rather than the actualisation. There are electric instruments in there, but the overall atmosphere is of recent Tom Robinson or maybe Chris Rea. The vocal style is probably a major factor in me thinking this way. Lots of good songs, too. "last.dog.in.space" is louder, brasher, and faster. Electric instruments are more to the fore. Stand-out tracks include "Bamboo rain", the straight-forward rock of the title track and "Ping you", and the dancefloor-esque rhythms of "Baby bang bang". Strong modern Chinese influence in several of the tracks, including bilingual vocals occasionally. Note also the unusual choice of cover version - "Fight for your right to party"! But when the writer and actor vanished from his Tribeca home Saturday night, he left behind nothing but questions about his state of mind. "None of us know how to deal because we don't know what we're supposed to feel yet," his wife, Kathie Russo, said yesterday. "I'm extremely numb." She told her children: "Daddy didn't come home, and we're concerned and we've called the police and they're looking for him." Four days into her husband's disappearance, Russo broke her silence to tell the Daily News about her fears for the talented but tortured performance artist. She said she wants to believe that Gray, who suffered a head injury during a 2001 car wreck in Ireland, is simply wandering the city in an amnesiac state. But she can't ignore the suffocating depression that gripped him after that accident - and his flirtations with suicide. Just as troubling are the sightings of Gray, 62, riding the Staten Island ferry the night he went missing, just before he called his son to say, "I love you." "I'm sure he was contemplating suicide off the ferry," Russo said. "I'm sure." That day, Gray was supposed to leave for an Aspen ski vacation, a present from Russo, but the flight was canceled. So he returned home to take sons Forrest, 11, and Theo, 6, to see "Big Fish," an emotional movie about a young man making peace with his dying father. "They got home around 6 p.m. and then he left around 6:30. He said he was meeting a friend for a drink," Russo said. "He said he'd be home at 9, and then he called at 9 and Theo answered and he said, 'I'm just making sure everything's okay and I'll be home soon and I love you.' "And, of course, I get home and I called the friend and he says, 'I haven't heard from Spalding.'" Two credible witnesses reported seeing him on two different Staten Island-bound ferries - the 7 p.m. and the 8:30 p.m., law-enforcement sources said. That's where the trail ends. After his 9 p.m. call to Theo, there was no word from Gray.Russo said it was easy to imagine her husband standing on the ferry, staring into water as dark as his thoughts. "Spalding talks about this in his work. He talks about slitting his wrists, then taking zValium. He talks about it openly - his fantasies with suicide," she said. "But the most I thought he'd do was to get on the ferry, ride it back and forth and that would be it. And, you know, go, 'I don't want to do that.'" Gray always had been proudly neurotic, but he became gloomy after shattering his hip in the Ireland accident. The terror attacks, and the sale of his beloved house in Sag Harbor, L.I., only made it worse. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, he tried electroshock treatments, psychotherapy, anti-depressants - even a jump off the Sag Harbor bridge last year. But in recent months, Gray appeared to be "getting better," Russo said. "He actually even told his doctor on Friday that he was looking forward to the trip," she said. That's why Russo clings to hope that her husband is alive. "Wherever he was, there must be someone who saw him," she said. "And that's my plea for anyone reading your paper: Please call the police." ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V13 #13 *******************************
