I think there's an interesting thematic resonance with the present day climate in foreign affairs and politics. interestingly (to me at least), the imdb says the remake is set during the Gulf War. > As for remaking Citizen Kane, it's probably > inevitable. it was inevitable. and it was called Velvet Goldmine. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Dec 2003 20:11:30 -0500 From: "Christopher Carville" Subject: Robyn Hitchcock/Soft Boys - Bit Torrent Hi- There are several active torrents for both Robyn & The Soft Boys at: http://www.sharingthegroove.org/msgboard/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=17 Just register, and do a search for Robyn or Soft Boys & you can find the threads. I can't see how her live shows would sell anyone on her, because they're, well, awful, and kind of scary. I saw her at All Tomorrow's Parties and she was (pick one or more) drunk/stoned/terrified/retarded/unable to finish a song, which divided the audience into three distinct factions, all of whom hated each other. Faction One was comprised of adoring fans who love her records and hung on her every slurred apology. Faction Two was incredulous at how bad she was and vocal about it. Faction Three (mine) was all, dude, shouldn't someone get this woman off the stage and see that she gets the help she clearly needs? Now? One of the quietest shows I've ever seen that seemed to hold the potential for a full scale riot or at least scattered fistfights. (The next act up was Television... this is the verlainemaniax list, right?) I've heard similar reports from other Cat Power shows, which make me wonder just how she's stayed functional enough to have gotten where she is*. When my neighbor told me about his encounter with Elliott Smith a month before his suicide, I thought, damn, from those indications, Chan Marshall is fully stabbing herself with a knife right now. But no, I don't find her records all that bad... not as compelling as some seem to think, but okay. >> YOU ARE CAT POWER FREE >>When I see it, I always think "Why yes, I *am* Cat Power-free!" That's up there with Depeche Mode / Enjoy the Silence, and Paula Abduul / Shut Up and Dance. There's other ones, but fuhhhh. Jeme: >>But I don't know of a word that means "singing while accompanying one's >>self on an instrument". Although, now that I think about it, it's not an >>unreasonable thing to ask. We should have a word for that. Well, in certain contexts either "played" or "sang" do the trick... specifically when it's clear that we're talking about either a musical artist (if I say "Robyn sang 'Birdshead'", it doesn't occur to you that it might be a capella unless I say so; similarly if I say "The Who played 'Baba O'Riley'", nobody pictures an instrumental version with Daltrey taking a piss break) or a situation where it's clear from other signs that (in Grammy parlance) a Vocal Performance with Accompaniment-type thing is going down. So the term would only be needed in a case like mine, where the performance just comes out of nowhere, in a household situation. Maybe I just needed to say "I grabbed my guitar and sang 'Begin the Begin'", which I doubt would give anyone the impression that I just held onto it while doing the singing. I mean, who am I, Bono? - -Rex "*that one's for the Syntax King" Broome ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Dec 2003 09:00:55 +0100 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: RE: DVD's, including one with Robyn on it - -- cmb adams is rumored to have mumbled on Freitag, 12. We used to go see him at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. It was really sad to see him in there at all. Everyone was very excited when he was taken to Norway to help move him toward a release into the wild. The jellyfish exhibit is still at the aquarium, however, and if you haven't seen it... oh man. It's one of the coolest things ever. There are jellyfish in there that look like little dirigibles with lights running down their ribs. It's just wow.
