A friend of mine at varsity introduced me to Underwater Moonlight, but - though I loved it - it was years until I next happened upon a RH album. That was Perspex Island which (back then) I loved, although it now does sound very dated. Current fave would be IODOT, but it varies on almost a weekly basis. James PS - welcome to the newcomers! Album proper: Black Snake Diamond Role. But I already had the Rykodisc Soft Boys collection, the A&M greatest hits, and Uncorrected Personality Traits. I dug the A&M collection right up until I heard his pre-A&M work when I practically threw the hits collection out. The odd thing about the soft boys collection, tho, is that some of the alternate versions on it are better than the album version. I was actually a little disappointed when I got Underwater Moonlight and the versions of UW and Insanely Jealous only had have as much energy as what I was used to. Actually, "Insanely Jealous" was my favourite RH song until I got Eye, when "Flesh Cartoons" took the lead for many years. Now it's "I Feel Beautiful". Especially since I do tend to go on. I am still planning to write an essay on the Robyn's transgendered songs, just because I think he's the only artist I've heard who has written so many songs about being a woman trapped in a man's body. I have to admit that one reason I haven't participated very much, is that I don't get the impression many other fans on the list are quite as academic in their study of RH as I am. Which explains why no one's raving about Jewels For Sophia like I am. Sebastian Hagedorn wrote: >OK, I've listened to it only two or three times, but to me Luxor is utterly > boring! What a disappointment ... I have to admit that I've only listened to Perspex Island all the way through once. That was just to get it over with. I find it hard to take such long songs in such a dry, commercial format. But still, as far as the early 90's go, if someone gave me the choice of listening to Pearl Jam, U2, or Robyn Hitchcock's worst album, Perspex Island would be on in a snap. I do find Luxor tiresome in some points, only because there's too many traditional chord patterns for my taste. But the lyrics are still fine, although not as carefully crafted as Jewels For Sophia, not as impressionistic as Moss Elixir, and not quite as emotional as Eye. I think the set I saw in Seattle could have done without "Salpadine"; cute, but tiresome, and his slide needs work. The album Luxor gave me mixed feelings at first. The first two tracks were obviously great, but I didn't know about the rest. However, each time I listened to it another song stood out. I still skip "You Remind Me of You" from time to time, although I do mean to analyse it as a transgendered song, and "Salpadine" is kind of a trite throwaway. Give it Morris & Andy and it would fit right in on Globe of Frogs... devo criticus ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Nov 2003 15:29:34 -0500 From: "Grunty" Subject: Re: Let's hear it for the artist Globe of Frogs was mine too, but on cassette.............LOL Vibrating was the first RH song i ever heard, after that it was all over, i had to have everything RH i could get my hands on. Same damn thing happened to me, but with Flesh No. 1 (Beetle Dennis). My big brother put it on the end of a Squeeze Cool For Cats tape he made for me because it had Glenn Tilbrooke doing back up vox. After that it was an obsessive collecting habit for a while. Denis, I wonder if you would feel the same about Insanely Jealous had you heard the UM version 1st.?
