I'd say Traffic were important for bringing jazz into rock, not just in terms of having a sax in the band, but also in terms of having a jazz 'attitude' to improvisation, looseness, adding and subtracting musicians from the line-up, switching instruments between numbers. A Winwood guitar solo was always a joy, because he didn't try to turn the volume up and blot out the rest of the band, but was always concerned to play within a musical context. Not like their contemporaries, the Cream, whom I loved at the time, but were usually raging to out-compete one another. I'm not sure whether it is a good thing or not, but Traffic were very influential on a whole generation of 'jamming' bands, notably the Allman Brothers and the Black Crowes (who played 'Feelin' alright' the only time I saw them). I always think of Bob Seger as being John the Baptist to Bruce Springsteen's Christ. All a bit working-class for me, but good value nevertheless. I couldn't dispute 'second-rate', however. For about 20 years Z Z Top have been on my list of top five bands I've never seen live. They were huge over here at the time of 'Eliminator' and must deserve some sort of award for longevity. Are they still extant? Even if the award is for his solo career, Harrison must deserve some credit for having written the two best songs on 'Abbey Road'. And there are some excellent songs on ATMP as well, but I think he was ill-advised to rush a double album (nay, a triple album) into the shops when he could have spread the good stuff out over several releases.
