Most of what Spector did on the original was just editing and splicing pieces together. "Long & Winding Road" is still a fairly slight song that has probably been elevated in status by McCartney's martyrdom campaign over his "abused song." As syruppy and overblown as the Spectorized version is, listening to the "Naked" version, you can see why Spector thought it needed some boosting. It probably would have been well-served by some orchestration more in line with what the Beatles typically had George Martin due for them. "Across the Universe" though is just fantastic stripped down. It doesn't have the annoying girls of the _Past Masters_ version nor is it as tentative as the version used on Anthology 2. Best thing about the album. The version of "Don't Let Me Down" is pretty shoddy sounding. The vocals sound shabby. A very unimpressive take. People who think Paul is out to get John reputation-wise would probably point to this as more evidence. And while neither "Maggie Mae" or "Dig It" are substantial, they are both kinda missed, as are a lot of the asides and studio chatter between songs; they added some texture, if not much content. I don't like the new running order very much, but that could just be because I'm used to it another way. ===== "Senator John McCain recently compared the situation in Iraq to the Vietnam era -- to which President Bush replied, 'What does Iraq have in common with drinking beer in Texas?'" -- Craig Kilborn "I don't think the Bush administration lied to us about Iraq. I think it's worse than that. I think they fooled themselves. I think they were conned by Ahmad Chalabi. I think they indulged in wishful thinking to a point of near criminality. I think they decided anyone who didn't agree with them was an enemy, anti-American, disloyal. In other words, I think they're criminally stupid." -- Molly Ivins __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Protect your identity with Yahoo! This isn't a joke, right? I'd read about them but had never actually heard any of their stuff, but I actually saw one of their videos this morning and all I could think was, "Does Liv Tyler have a really ugly brother?" I honestly thought it was some band's send-up of a genre a la Weezer's Buddy Holly or something but apparently it's in about as much earnest as any. It's official I guess. Alternating between saying "Hello" to Ringo and little half-assed trial jammings on various songs. The liner notes seem to want to create the impression that these were really happier sessions than previously thought, at least from what I skimmed of them -- I only have a dubbed copy -- and the "Fly on the wall" seems to have created and edited to reinforce this idea. With John and George (not to mention Brian Epstein and Mal Evans) dead, George Martin fading, and Ringo "only the drummer," Paul is clearly in control of what the public image of how the Beatles were, and as such the picture of the Beatles interpersonal relationships is going to be geared towards happy talk, for whatever that's worth. ===== "Senator John McCain recently compared the situation in Iraq to the Vietnam era -- to which President Bush replied, 'What does Iraq have in common with drinking beer in Texas?'" -- Craig Kilborn "I don't think the Bush administration lied to us about Iraq.
