In the UK, Jet Harris of the Shadows (who were originally called the Drifters, but changed for obvious reasons) always played bass guitar from Cliff's third single, 'Livin' Lovin' Doll' in 1959 (not to be confused with his 5th single, 'Living Doll'). I would have guessed that Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps were the first US group, but photos show them with a stand-up bass. Same for Bill Black with Elvis. Here's an entry: Johnny and the Hurricanes, presumably in 1959: And when did Eddie Cochran start recording with Connie 'Guybo' Smith? I've always assumed that 'Summertime Blues' used a bass guitar, but you can never tell with Eddie's Gold Star recordings - he often used a cardboard box with added echo for drums, so the bass could have been a piece of knicker elastic... - - Mike Godwin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 2003 16:16:29 +0000 (GMT) From: Michael R Godwin Subject: Re: the bottom line On Tue, 4 Nov 2003, gruntydawarthawg wrote: > if anyone cares to know who i was i was wearing a purple jewels for sophia > t-shirt, bell bottom jeans with a chain and a Carnivale pocket watch and a > black leather jacket, i had short reddish hair and glasses. I met Robert and Grant backstage in June of 1999 in Pontiac, MI after an acoustic show they did at the 7th House(now defunct). I don't know what picks they were using during the show, but they gave out free Heinekens to the couple of dozen of people that met them afterwards. I ended up saying one of the the drivers was a middle-aged white guy, but I was actually more annoyed at the drivers who hit me about having to put up with that crap than them crashing into my car, which isn't really fair I suppose. *The happy part is, I was already planning on getting a new[er, since it was actually an ex-rental] car in a couple months anyways, so the two insurance checks -- around $2400 -- made a very nice downpayment, along with the $10,000 I got from my mother selling her and my father's house when she moved. If you are planning to get a new car to replace your heap, I highly recommend getting rear-ended a few months beforehand. Try WET goths eating ice cream sundaes after getting off the log ride. It may have been the most fun I ever had working there, save the gay invasion day where several of my male co-workers were freaking out behind the the scenes because some of the queenier guys were flirting with everyone way more than was making them comfortable. Jim called me generous or something, I owe him a beer...I really am just a cheap bastard. I have seen Robyn acoustic roughly a dozen times and I have to say that these two shows have to be right up near the top. They were without a doubt superior to the shows he did at the same venue in 2002. The first set was much more in a Halloween spirit as has been mentioned. So many songs touching on death and so many of them uplifting and funny. Always touching on the down side of life with an outside perspective. He was in the zone both musically and with his absurdist humor. Sometimes the chat bits he does seem forced, like he has to in spite of the fact that he has no desire to...not this time. The second set had far less chat but more great music. Some people who went to only the second show thought he wasn't "on" that night. If they had been to both they would have thought Differently. Viewed as the second half of one 3 hour show it fits in fine with the rest of the evening. He mentioned that he might be coming back in early December, I sure hope so. Who on list sent the link to the Black Snake promo poster on Ebay a few months back, one of the Brians? Well, I got it signed and Robyn wrote the following "RH. Hold on to this, I've never seen it Before! RH", yes he initialed it twice in his excitement . Maybe it would have sold better if people had seen the promo posters when it came out!
