Not that I advocate either... that's just what I observed. I'm sure 7th graders were still using it quite earnestly." Got to tell you about this: last year in Grade Nine, my daugher reported to me that louts in her class were stunning the teachers by yelling out things like "This is so GAY!" when they were trying to fix a broken binder or their pen wouldn't write. She said that the teacher would whirl around at the blackboard and stare at the misguided child who was really trying to say that something was not working correctly. Apparently "retarded" is no longer politically correct. I asked her about the "emo" classification and have no more to add to what's already been said on this list. A certain pride and coyness was observed in my daughter as she described "her" music. It's time for us babyboomers to stop owning everything apparently. I have trouble with classifications, using alternative and progressive almost interchangeably. Pricey show ($13), a little too much for what we got. I missed the first band (the Silents) and suffered through another dull set from John Vanderslice. I mean, the guy doesn't suck or anything, it's just pretty run-of-the-mill indie-rock (is that the right categorization?). His bassist was a total ham who reminded me of Jack Black, except not very funny. Beulah rocked, as usual - focusing mainly on their older stuff rather than their somewhat lackluster new album, which was fine by me. They did my theme song, "Emma Blowgun's Last Stand," along with many other favorites of mine. They have a new member who doesn't seem to do much except play tambourine and play a few notes on the keyboard or guitar now and then. Miles Kurosky was extremely ill but mustered a bit of his usual slacker-funny stage banter... "We love you, Portland, we really do... we don't give a shit about Vancouver" and something about John Vanderslice going to a strip club and getting his hair combed. "You guys are sick, and I come from San Francisco." There was no encore, much to everyone's disappointment. I had a tinfoil sculpture for Miles but didn't get to give it to him as he was "at death's door" backstage, according to Beulah's very short, affable drummer Danny (who is also a friend of former feg Jeannine Hayes). He remarked that this tour had been really rough on him because a couple of beloved relatives had died and his girlfriend had broken up with him. I felt sorry for him and give him Miles's tinfoil sculpture. He was delighted. :) So last night I went to see the Shins do an in-store. I arrived late, as is my wont, and ended up standing at the back of the store - it was extremely crowded and I couldn't see much, but the Shins appeared to be wearing hospital gowns and the goofy keyboardist Marty had a bear mask he kept putting on and taking off. Sometimes it would slip and hang around his neck. His shenanigans caused singer James Mercer to start cracking up during one of their most serious songs, "New Slang." The band rocked through a short set, mostly playing stuff from their new album, and finished up with a crowd-pleasing "oldie," "Know Your Onion." I don't think the Shins get enough props as a live band - I think especially with the addition of their new bassist (who doubles on guitar and sings back-up vox), they've really started to kick some serious ass. I'm sorry I couldn't see them better, but I've seen them before and I'll see them again, so that's OK. There were some good costumes in the crowd - I liked the Frida Kahlo costume (complete with monobrow), but the absolute best was Margo and Richie Tenenbaum. I also ran into our very own Michael Wolfe, whom I will no doubt see again at the Robyn show in a couple of weeks. Speaking of which, Jane the Timeline Chick tells me that the Robyn show will be attended by the unfortunately-named Steven King of Red Eye Distribution, which distributed Luxor. So if any Portlanders had trouble finding the album, you can bitch to him. ;) n. np: Neko! _________________________________________________________________ Add MSN 8 Internet Software to your current Internet access and enjoy patented spam control and more.
