Surely Arianna with the letters 'ust' added becomes "Austrianna". One has to pick one's battles - I couldn't agree more! My g/f Chrissy won't let me call myself a vegetarian as I eat fish, and I have to agree with her, though we both wear leather (I would hate to think of the state of my feet if encased in another material)... of course I could go vegan, but then I just don't have the commitment to be one! Interesting points also about the Jag - Interestingly enough I was having a conversation with a struggling musician about The Fall having a song for a car advert over here - he said one has to make one's money somehow, especially in so precarious a career as music, but I felt that it was a bit of a sell-out... what do ye fegs reckon? Is it a sell out? It's a necessary evil, especially in the case of musicians who have other financial obligations (aka children). Even in the cases of people like Bowie or the Stones, who need the money like they need a hole in the head, it doesn't bother me all that much any more just because they've been so screwed by their record companies etc, that they are still behind how much money they really ought to have. Plus, both Moby (with the whole Play album) and Sting (that song in the Jag commercial wasn't a hit until _after_ it was in the commercial) have shown that putting songs in commercials can actually be used to now promote records. Now, re-recording the songs with new words to specifically promote the product.... ===== "Pentagon officials says Americanizing Iraq is difficult because Iraqis have had little to no reliable information for the past 35 years, and have lived on a diet of innuendo, rumor, conspiracy theories, fear, and propaganda. So my grandmother passed away this weekend. I'm now trying to book a flight back to West Virginia for the funeral. Well, not to West Virginia per se, what with there not being any major airports there, but to some other place three hours away from my hometown so I can rent a car and slog homeward (insert John Denver reference here), and I'll be there through the weekend, looks like. Bizarre side effect: I will not get to vote in the recall election. After putting up with all of this crap for months, at the last minute I'll be out of the state on election day. As I write I'm on hold with the LA County Retistrar's office trying to see if there's anything I can do about this. I'm guessing not so much. But it sure is putting a depressing spin on several different already depressing situations. That's what I've found out. The Registrar's office is in Norwalk, which sounds helaciously distant until you realize that it's relatively speaking RIGHT BY LAX and that's where I have to go tonight *anyway*. Leave work at 6PM, need to check in at LAX by 8:45... this just might work, depending on how many other people like me are queued up at the office. So that's good for me, and good for you if you think I'd vote like you. Which, I dunno, I don't see the feg-list as a bastion of Ahnuld boosters, so most of y'all are probably on my side.
