I threw a bottle at Oreo Shitcookie, in the Superdome in New Orleans, in 1982 or so, during a big Rawk Festival. From the nosebleed section. Don't know if the bottle made it, though -- it probably bonked some coked-up, tube-top/flip-flop ensemble sportin', black-rooted and feathered Z-28 cameltoe pilot in the general admission section. "Wow, Earlene, that's some killer blow. I'm so fucked up I'd blow Mick Mars." I'm pretty sure I landed something on stage during Christopher Cross's set, however. Oh, and like you wouldn't have tried it yourself. Then The Nuge came on stage and fucked shit up, big time. Earlene took off her shirt and they showed her boobs on the overhead screens. Pure class. Pure '80s. It's likely you'll find pics of Shitcookie's members here: Stevie Nicks is a witch, you know. It's true. I've never had the gall to throw anything onstage at any show. I did once throw a half-full bottle of Cherry Coke (TM) at a cow. I was cutting through a field, and this cow appeared out of nowhere, standing there munching cud, trying to look innocent. The thing had a very suspicious look on it's face, like it had just conceived some evil plan, which I don't pretend to but know, but it was clear to me that the plan culminated in my demise. I threw the soda bottle and ran like buggers. It was a terrific launch. The bottle smacked solidly against the animal's right shoulder, and although the cow didn't move, I feel pretty confident that I instilled the fear of God in it's bovine heart. [etc] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Oct 2003 12:37:13 -0700 From: "Rex.Broome" Subject: Rex's Record Rack: Reissues and Remakes Man, do I have a boatload of new records here in front of me. Hope to get through them enough to say something about 'em in the near future. But here's a starter which will hopefully dovetail with an Eb review of last night's Television show. (1) Tom Verlaine, Flash Light (reissue). Well, this scores over the original CD release in exactly no way whatsoever other than the fact that you can get ahold of it. Unlike the Collector's Choice reissue of his self-titled record, no news notes by Tom or anyone else. In fact there are two less panels in the booklet, so the lyrics are smaller and the reproduction of the LP back cover has gone missing. Soundwise, it's clearly duped stright from the original IRS CD, so it's state-of-the art for 1987. I'd classify it as another minor indignity done to Verlaine's catalog in the digital age, especially since there's a whole album's worth of b-sides from the record kicking around. I'll keep mine because my old one is way scratchy. (2) Television, Marquee Moon (reissue). Now this is more like it. Sounds quite good indeed. Nice faux-LP packaging, booklet with decent notes, photos, interviews etc. And lookee here... the full performance of Little Johnny Jewel from the Ork single on CD for the first time. Cool. Other bonus tracks include alternate versions of "See No Evil" (sounds like the LP take with some bonus wheedly-whee from Lloyd on the verses), Friction (whole different take and a good one), Marquee Moon (mostly different solos) and an instrumental version of live staple "Oh Mi Amore". Still, it's not a Verlaine CD without a screwup: the version of Marquee Moon in the album proper retains the mistake on the original CD issue (it finishes instead of fading out like it did on the original LP). Nonetheless... nice. (3) Television, Adventure (reissue). Very glad this got reissued along with the debut, because for what's always thought of as a "sophomore slump" it's really a great record. It's really grown in my estimation in recent years and listening to this remastered version elevates it even further. Bonuses include the long-missing title song (nice if clearly unfinished), the single mix of Ain't That Nothing (different vocal) plus an instrumental alternate (and very loose) take of the same (not on the track listing but alluded to in the liner notes, so there's your requisite botch-up), and an "early version" of Glory (different performance & lyrics). If you haven't bothered to pick this up due to its "meh" reputation, the reissue's a nice excuse to appreciate its charms. Minor gripe: mine came with the digipak already slightly dented... prolly wouldn't've mail-ordered it if I'd known it was made of paper. (4) Carla Buzolich, Red Headed Stranger. Spinning this for the first time right now. Very nice balance between the traditional and the experimental. Add a credible banjo to the very long list of things Nels Cline can do on the guitar. I think I'm really going to like this... haven't gotten to the Carla/Willie duet yet, but she sounds great, and really committed to these tunes and this story, which makes sense, because why the hell else would you do this? Spooky take on any already spooky record. Speaking of Verlaine, and members of the Highwaymen, and the collision of country music and weirdo guitar abstraction... am I the only one here dorky enough to have heard Verlaine's solo acoustic version of "I Walk the Line"? Thought so. More later, maybe. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Oct 2003 12:46:43 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: Rex's Record Rack: Reissues and Remakes "Rex.Broome" wrote: > (2) Television, Marquee Moon (reissue). ... > Still, it's not a Verlaine CD without a screwup: the > version of Marquee Moon in the album proper retains the > mistake on the original CD issue (it finishes instead of > fading out like it did on the original LP). > Nonetheless... nice. Actually, in the essay, it mentions that this wasn't really a mistake; the fade-out on the vinyl was only done because their wasn't enough room for the full song. ===== "Pentagon officials says Americanizing Iraq is difficult because Iraqis have had little to no reliable information for the past 35 years, and have lived on a diet of innuendo, rumor, conspiracy theories, fear, and propaganda.
