In its literal sense, "bustin' a 40" would presumably mean "drinking a 40-ounce bottle of beer or malt liquor." However, our new meme changes the meaning to a metaphorical one - to reiterate, bragging pointlessly about contact with a famous person. I was just bustin' a 40 on another list by telling people about my tinfoil sculptures going on tour with the Olivia Tremor Control. Please use this phrase as often as possible! It's very handy, and besides which, I want to spread the meme over several continents. James, if you start using it, it would be a great triumph. The fact that 40-ounces don't actually exist in other countries further separates the phrase from its original meaning, allowing it to take on a life of its own. Well, seeing as he only produced three albums there's not a lot to go on really. There's "Pink Moon" itself, his last album and the starkest of them - - basically just guitar and voice. "Five Leaves Left" and "Bryter Later" are much lusher in orchestration and also somehow more "English" in feel. Apart from that there's a compilation of outtakes and a number of bootlegs of private recordings, most of which you can find as mp3s. Recommendations? Buy the lot - I think the boxed set of all the recordings is still available. cheers john, who's confused that in the "songs about people" thread nobody mentioned "I Saw Nick Drake", or who was too stupid to recognise it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2003 12:27:06 +0100 From: "Matt Sewell" Subject: Re: Reap Another (presumably) manky-toothed old fascist bites the dust (cf.
