But I also, even though I'm a leftist myself, found myself (in typically ambiguity-seeking, closure-lacking liberalism: see "Doonesbury" from two-three Sundays ago for an illustration) wondering whether the tone of the report wasn't just a bit too weighted toward an anti-conservative POV. I also found this statement a bit odd: "Glaser acknowledged that the team's exclusive assessment of the psychological motivations of political conservatism might be viewed as a partisan exercise. However, he said, there is a host of information available about conservatism, but not about liberalism." Say what? How is there not "a host of information" about liberalism? Are there not decades of back issues of _The Nation_, _Harper's_, or (further back) _The New Republic_ or _Partisan Review_? Are there not decades of political speeches from liberals and leftward, writings that respond thereto and describe responses to them, etc. etc. etc.? It would have been appropriate in this context, I think, for the authors to have identified whether they strove to make the research team balanced politically: an apolitical researcher probably couldn't properly assess the information, but if most researchers held particular political perspectives, of course that might skew the results. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::Oxygen isn't a text:: __David Robbins__ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jul 2003 13:33:20 -0400 From: Steve Talkowski Subject: Matrix Ping Pong Now THIS is pretty freaking cool: http://www.apbm26.dsl.pipex.com/kin10.wmv ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2003 08:42:40 -0700 (PDT) From: Capuchin Subject: Re: Matrix Ping Pong On Fri, 25 Jul 2003, Steve Talkowski wrote: > Now THIS is pretty freaking cool: > > http://www.apbm26.dsl.pipex.com/kin10.wmv > > (Windows Media Player is needed to view) Windows Media Player isn't NEEDED to view this, by the way. The label is eyeing a Sept. 23 release for the sets, though a spokesperson for Coming Home Productions tells Billboard.com the release date for the DVD may move due to logistical issues. "Rush in Rio" was recorded last Nov. 23 on the last show of the band's Vapor Trails tour. The disc features 28 songs, ranging from staples such as "Tom Sawyer," "Limelight," "The Spirit of Radio" and "YYZ" to newer album cuts like "One Little Victory," "Earthshine" and "Secret Touch." Said bassist Geddy Lee (news) on his official Web site (http://www.geddylee.net), "It was quite an evening with another incredible crowd and we managed pull off a pretty darn good performance to boot." The DVD version of "Rush in Rio" includes all 28 songs from the CD, augmented with a documentary with footage from other shows in the Brazilian (news - web sites) cities Porte Allegre and Sao Paolo. Fans will be able to view the action from multiple cameras, and, according to Lee, will be treated to "extra stuff like pictures of Big Al at home in his pajamas and some other unusual things hidden in there somewhere." Rush has been inactive since the end of its last tour, but will regroup Wednesday (July 30) to play the Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto benefit, alongside the Rolling Stones, AC/DC and Justin Timberlake (news). Addressing rumors that the band may take an extended break before a new project, Lee wrote, "after a reasonable amount of time off I'm sure we will wander back into the studio and attempt to make another collection of esoteric yet unrepentantly bombastic rock ditties. After which (providing that goes well of course) we will probably throw ourselves back out there on the road so we can give and take the abuse that we and you so richly deserve!" McBrain, 51, known to his fans as Mad McBrain, struck Mark Robinson, 30, with his 2004 black Jaguar at 8:30 p.m. after the attendant asked to see the rocker's credentials for the VIP parking lot, officials said. Robinson told cops he didn't get a clear look at McBrain's pass and asked to see it again. "Mr. McBrain got agitated," said Maj. Rich O'Donnell, a spokesman for the state park police. "He drove his car forward, striking the employee in the legs." Though he'd been bumped once, the lot worker insisted on seeing the pass, cops said. When he asked the third time, the drummer again hit the gas, this time knocking Robinson up on the hood of the luxury car, cops said. McBrain, whose real first name is Michael, was charged with third-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangerment, both misdemeanors, and released with a desk appearance ticket. At 9:25 p.m., he went on stage with the band and played before 7,000 fans in the waterfront amphitheater until 11 p.m. Robinson was taken to Nassau University Medical Center and treated for minor injuries, cops said. McBrain, who lives in London, is due back in Nassau County district court Sept. 16. The band, in the midst of its Give Me Ed ... 'Til I'm Dead world tour, plays Madison Square Garden on Wednesday. Part One: The Part About Lucinda So I got my ticket courtesy of my Wife's Boss, who's also a good friend of hers. I was thus to meet him and his two friends at the Greek for the concert. I always forget how these big-ass shows work; even before my gig-going was severely curtailed by the whole parenthood thing, I was almost exclusively a club-show guy; aside from the odd festival-type happening, the only artists I've seen in venues the size of the Greek or larger are (offhand), the Stones (lay off, I was 18), REM, and, ummm, Neil Young, several times. So I'm like, oh yeah, stacked parking, big hike to the theatre, way more stupid/obnoxious/stoned people than I'm used to, all that stuff with which to contend. Make it to the Greek but have to wait for my ticket. Lucinda's already on. Sounds great, loud, some just searing, freaky guitar going on in there Get to hear a few tunes I'd really like to be in there for, but my guy and his two friends show up pretty soon and we get in and get situated with no problem. It's my Wife's Boss, a Friend of Wife's Boss, and said Friend's Wife. All are notably older, drunker, and stoned-er than me, and will turn out to be a bit rowdier as well. Wife's Boss's Friend needs to verify that I am over 30 in order to earn the right to be there. So ultimately I get to see about half of Lucinda's set. She's playing with a four piece (including herself on a nice-lookin' Telecaster) with a decidedly rockin', dare-I-say-it-Crazy-Horse-like vibe. Okay, tighter than Crazy Horse, but not obnoxiously tight; I think it's the band with which she cut the new (and spectacularly good) album. Now, about Lucinda herself, it must be said-- and I hope that this can be accepted in the spirit of Natalie wanting to marry various cute guys in the bandsshe sees, and Eb rating Britta Philips as the most beautiful performer he's ever seen-- so, anyway, where Lucinda is concerned, I want to fuck her. Now, it's true that techinically she's old enough to be my mother. But (A) she's much younger than my actual mother, and (B) she's not old enough to be my wife's mother, nor therefore the grandmother of my (specific) children, and (C) I seem to have carnal desires toward far fewer "celebrities", and very different kinds of them, than most men do, so that all combines to make this whole wanting-to-fuck-her thing, which was in no way diminished by this concert, seem okay to me. Plus, I'll certainly never have the opportunity and even if I did I probably wouldn't avail myself of it, what with the whole aforementioned me-being-married thing. But somewhere between her voice, her songs, and her talent for rocking out, the fuck-desire remains, so I just have to live with it. Anyways, as I said, I got to see about half of her set, including probably my top choices for songs-to-hear-live from her last tree albums. Especially great was "Real Live Bleeding Fingers etc." which she introduced as being inspired by Paul Westerberg "of the Replacement", which was interesting; dunno if she meant stylistically or whether the song was about him (either one is plausible). "Essence" she dedicated to "Matthew". (It would give me serious heebie-jeebies to have that tune dedicated to me.) She closed with a grittier-than-hell take on "Joy" complete with sweaty rave-up finale. Good, yummy stuff. Wish I'd seen the whole thing. In an arrangement which would more or less repeat itself all night, Wife's Boss really liked Lucinda's set; Wife's Boss's Friend disliked it, calling it "okay music to wash your car by", and Wife's Boss's Friend's Wife was just kinda bored and wasted. Off to get a beer and check out the merch. Madhouse out there. Old hippies, old ex-hippie rich guys 'n' girls, etc. Most folks my age seem to be more on the Dave Matthews/Phish tip than the Sonic Youth crowd you used to see, so I guess that association has faded away. But there are younger folks than myself who seem to be wearing t-shirts from Jr. Hardcore bands of whom I'm dimly aware at best, and, erm, a few Young Goths. Always interesting, Neil crowds. Standing in line at the t-shirt booth I find myself behind a woman who sounds and looks sort of like Allison Janney. Seems plausible. I'm hoping I'm not creeping her out by sneaking glances at her to verify, but I eventually determine it's not Allison Janney at all. So I'm glad that I get that all cleared up, because minutes later after purchasing her Lucinda baby-tee, she whips off the top she's wearing (nb. it's all she's wearing from the waist up) and takes a few minutes to shimmy into her new one. So I guess I needn't have worried about looking at her too closely, and I'm glad I had, because otherwise I would've had the distinct impression that I'd seen Allison Janney topless in person. Which is not a goal of mine or anything, but would've been something worth mentioning in the future, I guess. Back to my seat in time for the main show, to be detailed later. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2003 11:36:58 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: Rexmaniax!
