I've long wondered how good the actual *source recordings* of most of the SST catalog are. We all agree that Ginn is a Class A Puddwhacker, which leads me to believe he didn't spend a lot of money on engineers (a guy named Spot? Hello?), recording studios, producers, and other such non-Punk Rawk niceties. But the SST LPs generally sound like poop, so we may never know. Maybe the master tapes sound great, but ended up on cheaply pressed vinyl and CDs. Granted, Ryko did a very good job with the Meat Puppets' catalog, which leads me to believe the master tapes probably aren't so bad. But it's not like the Slovenly catalog is gonna get a full DSD remaster job from George Marino or Bob Ludwig. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2003 10:18:04 -0700 From: "Rex.Broome" Subject: Sucky '70's mop-up James: >>Have you ever noticed that cheapo compilations of 'the best music of the >>70s' always seem to concentrate on (a) disco, and (b) the nascent >>country-stadium groups? For some reason I've had the feeling its rep has dipped in recent years (maybe that "100 Records You Should Throw Away List"?)... to me it's the purest portrait of Bowie as a songwriter, warts and all. But I change my mind on this one all the time. Trout Mask I had as 1970 so it must say that on my CD somewhere. The Cale-produced Nico records are staples for me, thus Desertshore trumps The End, with Marble Index sadly two years shy of the '70's. Glad I pulled off a surprise somewhere in there! God, I missed "Shoot Out the Lights" (maybe sub that in for Trout Mask) and I never chose a Reed, Costello or Waits record. Pere Ubu's early stuff I have as the box set so it has an '80's vintage in my database. Blehh. I kinda suck; I threw it together while I was running out the door. Yo, did I just see a vote for Lou's self-titled record? Michael, are you mad? I think Dolph's list was most similar to mine, narrowly followed by Eb's. I would've guessed JeFFrey's would intervene between the two, but it looks a close third. Eb: >>I have more albums than you, but percentagewise, that's not so far >>from my own distribution. I guess my '70s and '80s divisions carry a >>bit more weight. I forgot another thing that skews the later years are singles, boots and promos being much more easily snapped up used and on CD in th '90's. For example I have 15 and 23 titles during the '90's for Robyn and REM respectively, and I don't view it as necessarily a banner decade for either, at least in terms of the desireability of non-album tracks. Also ended up with a lot of free compilations and soundtracks which I keep for tracks by 1 or 2 artists apiece (job perks that I didn't have in the '70's or '80's). Excuses, excuses; my critical opinion of the '90's as a whole remains fairly dim, no matter how many records I own. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2003 13:15:49 -0400 From: broadway jack Subject: robynhitchcock.com news update from : Storefront Hitchcock will be screened by the British Museum Film Society Robyn will be introducing the film and taking questions afterwards.
