I make it out as three syllables, akin to Coo-WAH-coo or cooHOOcoo, but I don't know what the hell it is either. I kind of assumed it was a weird vocal overdub by Bardot since (A) Gainsbourg always had women doing weird stuff other than singing, such as, like, yelping as if being beaten, or coming, because the women really couldn't sing too well, and (B) if it's someone other than Bardot, like a separate backup singer, how the hell did they come up with that? There are some really weird backing vocals on a lot of his songs, though. 'Nother odd note on that tune. Just after I got back from living in Paris (which time encompassed Gainsbourg's death), and a while before Gainsbourg became quite so retro-cool in the states, my girlfriend bought an album by Soho (of "that-song-with-the-Smiths-sample-and-the-chick" fame) which had a song on it which was a cover of "Bonnie & Clyde", in English, with the names changed to "Hamed & Jacques", sung by a male vocalist. It was really weird. Every once in a while I see a Soho album in the used bin and look at it, but none of them seem to be the one with that song. (Rest of the album sucked anyhow; it's just starting to seem like I have an alarming amount of covers of that tune so I might as well collect 'em all.) Any advice? Best places to go at that time of the year? Not a good time to go? Any good Halloween celebrations? I like to do a variety of things - museums, outdoor stuff (hiking, riding, etc.), concerts, sitting at cafes people watching, and best of all - hanging out in cemeteries with my camera. Most likely I'll be traveling alone so any advice on good places a wee lass would feel safe visiting (and I do like to hang out in pubs) would be appreciated! Does wonders for the odd sinus headache, though. On the concert front, I am -so- psyched: just scored 12th row for the big Dio / Motorhead / Iron Maiden triple bill coming this fall!!! I know you'll all be so jealous, but I just had to share the news. That expenditure is, however, seriously cramping my budget for other shows...after a crappy couple of months for concerts around here, Wire is playing Double Door (where the SB's played last year, it seats about five people) next week, and there's a few tickets left for The Fall's second show three days later...and Hothouse Flowers the week after...and then it's full-on festival concerts (hey! Blondie's coming to my hometown! Ha!). Must save money...must save money...must save... Lou comes out as very committed, extremely talented and near-clinically paranoid. The only time I saw the Velvets (Wembley Arena 1988) they were great except that Lou's voice was shot to pieces (or was he not even trying, as some allege?). His rhythm guitar playing was fantastic, however, and Moe, Cale and Sterling were rock solid. But reports from later in the tour suggest that near-tangible bad vibes between Lou and the others ruined the show. In the 70s I saw Lou solo two or three times and it was never as good as I had hoped. I was at a talk by Mick Rock recently and I was interested to find out that the cover shot of 'Transformer' was taken at the Kings Cross gig in 1971 which was the first time I ever saw Lou. The barely-adequate backing band were the Tots and "Berlin" was the number they were really plugging. (Apparently the 'Raw Power' cover shot of Iggy was taken at the same venue during the same week). "Electricity comes from other planets" - - Mike Godwin PS Remember those polls in the 70s where Keith Richards and Lou were regularly voted 'Rock star most likely to die soon'?
