Maxi: I had no problem ordering my copy on sunday. Hopefully I can give it multiple listens on my way to Brooklyn next Tuesday(and back on wednesday), provived it has arrived. I am heading up to see Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips at the Village Underground. Tim Reed is serving as my guide and Ken Weingold as my host, oh the joys of being laid off and collecting unemployment. You would think being laid off would give you all this time to do things, somehow is does not seem to. It took me 8 hours to watch Once Upon A Time In America today, it's less than 4 hours long. Too much crap to do around the house, where was this crap when I was working? I suppose Kathy now has a great reduction of this crap, lucky her. Okay, I'll stop before this turns into a George Carlin routine. Anyhow, although I did wait for it's homepage sale I am very excited about hearing Luxor. How are they going to tell that the people on the far end of the connection are bound by a copyright agreement with the United States? Honestly, it'll probably just end up being an agreement between Microsoft and the RIAA such that the RIAA can throttle your network connection with the sending of some key or other to Windows. It's not something that'll bother users of Free Software, of course. And yeah, the script-kiddies will know those codes in days. It was yet another of these mildly frustrating shows I keep seeing lately, where the music is strong but no one has any stage energy to speak of. Rheumy-eyed, mussy-haired Wareham always looks like he just rolled out of bed, and performs like it too. Phillips' and Wareham's new album (L'Avventura, presumably named after the bitchen Antonioni film) is better than expected -- I actually prefer it over anything by Luna since Penthouse. It's more lush and romantic, and has a new flavor of classic French bubblegum. The two share the vocals, but I prefer Britta's whispery bits. Nearly Longet-esque, I daresay. Given the offbeat type of bands I usually see, Britta was one of the most beautiful women I've seen perform. Easily the most traditionally glamorous woman I've seen perform since, oh, at least Nelly Furtado. Blonde hair artfully pinned up, and a blue Chinese-style dress which went no lower than mid-thigh. Sculpted legs and high heels. She was weakly lit in red and blues throughout most of the concert, however...darn it. ;) She played bass, plus a bit of acoustic guitar. The other two musicians were also female -- one on drums, and another on keyboards (a synthetic substitute for the album's string arrangements) and occasional acoustic guitar. I arrived belatedly when the band was already onstage, which was probably due to me missing the right freeway off-ramp on the way over and getting a wee bit lost. Phooey. I saw just over a hour of music though, so I can't have missed much. I'm not sure that the group played any true Luna songs -- I don't think the set went much beyond the new album. However, the final encore was Serge Gainsbourg's "Bonnie & Clyde," which was the hidden track on Luna's Penthouse disc. I like this song a lot, but darn it, where were the COO-koos? If ya gonna do "Bonnie & Clyde," ya gotta have the COO-koos! Right? I don't know what the heck they're doing there on the original, but that's a stroke of absurdist genius if ever I heard one. At one point, Wareham plugged a new *movie* he's in, which is being shown on Thursday at the Director's Guild complex. It's called "Piggie." I didn't quite grasp his degree of participation, but later in the set, a Angelina Jolie-esque natural beauty approached me and asked me to go home with h...oh wait, no, that wasn't it. Actually it turned out that she is the film's female lead, and she was carefully doling out a limited number of promotional postcards to folks who appeared receptive to seeing the isolated showing at the DGA. She also co-wrote the film, collaborating with a first-time female director who had previous co-written the purty-darn-good "Buffalo '66." Here's the actress: http://www.imdb.com/Name?Haske,+Savannah She didn't look familiar to me, but it looks like she served a good-sized stint on the series "Third Watch" (which I've never seen). The film has original music not only by Wareham, but also by the Luscious Jackson offshoot Dusty Trails (whose one previous album deserved a lot better treatment than it received). Anyway, I guess Wareham is actually the male lead, which is quite surprising. Haske told me that he was already friends with the director, who spontaneously decided to cast him after seeing him comically impersonate a waiter (or something?) at a party. Networking is a modern marvel. Later, Haske offered me some of her french fries. Can you even *bear* this much excitement? The Eels were also playing in a nearby venue tonight, but I skipped it. And I need sleep. Real bad. Oh, a small footnote: Remember when we were discussing that "Playboy's Women of Indie Rock" poll a few weeks ago, and someone suggested Britta Phillips should have been among the choices? Well, the publicist at her label told me today that the magazine actually *did* talk to the label about including her. But somehow, it didn't end up happening. Huh! A second odd footnote: A week or so ago, I was idly watching a chunk of an "E! True Hollywood Story" episode on Justine Bateman (solely because I was wondering "What the heck happened to HER to warrant this tribute??"), and Phillips suddenly popped onscreen to offer a soundbite or two. Too bizarre. Turns out she was in that lousy girl-rock film "Satisfaction" with Bateman. (This film gets a lot of unearned attention, simply because a pre-superstardom Julia Roberts was also in the cast.)
