Feh. I'm still annoyed that in order to play the latest generations of games on my Apple G4 I need to buy a new video card ($75 and up) and a new processor ($400 and up), which is about what a decent no-name Bill Box costs. So what do I do? I spend no more money on my G4, or play video games anymore. Don't miss them much. I'm tired of the upgrade treadmill. But I appreciate your ideas. Given the time, money, and desire, I'd probably do it myself. > Someday I'll ditch the TV I hear that. It's just a matter of time before Fox, Clear Channel, and Rupert Murdoch own all the US broadcast media anyway. > But perhaps some aspect of the entertainment industry sees that the > writing is on the wall for digital publishing (that the real effect of > markets is to provide abundance and utterly destroy profits) and is > just releasing all this crap to cash in while there's still something > to cash in on. I think that's true for the old entertainment industry. The new players, like Apple, are innovating, and embracing content providers (such as small and independent record labels). I also think the big labels have invested and wasted so much money on a few new acts that there's profit in reissues. The Dark Side Of The Moon reissue is selling very well, and there are many albums that are on their third round of issue on CD, so it must be profitable. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Jun 2003 11:28:55 -0700 From: "Natalie Jane" Subject: beware more long-winded concert reviews... Busy, busy, busy concert schedule in July, to wit: July 8 - Pernice Brothers (their new album is really growing on me, despite the lack of the lush sounds that attracted me to their previous one... Joe Pernice is still a hell of a songwriter no matter what.) July 13 - SPOOOOON! (I have to say it like the Tick) July 20 - The Jayhawks (I only own one album by them, which came out ten years ago, but what the hell... maybe I can bitch out Gary Louris for stealing my hairstyle) July 24 - as previously mentioned, Jay Farrar and Tim Easton I'm excited! Though I may have to forego one or two of them because they're on weeknights. The sorrowful life of the working stiff. I'm told that eventually this stuff will all be tied together and easily transferrable between your hard drive and your actual TV set, but I don't really want to have to work at no computer nohow just to get ahold of broadcast material. I'm at a computer at work all day, and I do a lot of creative stuff on the computer (demos and photo scanning etc.) and I accept that because if I don't do my own songs and pictures, no one else will. But since someone else made those TV shows, I 'd rather not work that hard to get 'em. As someone at ground zero in the DVD Reissue Explosion (a Hollywood film archivst type), I do think that pretty much every TV show is going to come out on DVD. Once. Most films will probably stay in print or be deluxely reissued from time to time, but I don't think "The Complete Mr. Ed" is going to get a second pressing, so grab 'em while they're hot. It's kind of stressful, actually; so many great shows are coming out so quickly, and me without the money to get them before they start to disappear (which is already sort of happening). _______ Quail: >>Oh my! Frustrated Artist Syndrome, really. I'm going to have to work on dialing it back. >>it seems Fegs are increasingly harder to please. ;) That's true, isn't it? Could be a few things in play. For one thing not a single one of us is getting any younger. It's also possible that art and entertaiment are actually getting worse by feggy standards. For my part I find commerce intruding just a little bit more, and a little bit more crassly, into everything there is to watch, read or listen to on a yearly basis, and that's a little soul-threatening. "Watch Your Intelligence" is pretty well coming true by degrees... _____ Sad news for Angelenos, looks like All Tomorrow's Parties had been delayed until the Fall (hmm, oddly the Fall were on the bill). This was heralded by a press release questioning whether or not LA can support such an enterprise, and that saddens me... although I confess I was surprised that LA was chosen as the US venue to begin with, especially since last year's lineup was so heavy on NY and East Coast rock history. I hope they can get it together again with most of the same lineup. Apparently at least the Magic Band is "confirmed" for the Fall dates, but so many of the artists I really wanted to see are such sporadic performers that I have my doubts. The newer TV's and set-top boxes contain digital connectors that can transmit rights management information to each other. Jesus Christ. I really don't give a bucket of shit what this Justin guy chooses to do with his underwear. Could the PR people just let up for two seconds?
