In fact, in Ontario they have already switched over. Police here have been ignoring simple possession of small amounts for years anyway... There are threats from the States that changing our drug laws will make border crossings more difficult but our present government has gone way past caring about that. As for property for sale, it's cheaper in Hamilton (for example) than in Victoria. Having lived in both places, I would recommend the west coast. Mad props to Brian Lazerlove for this one! http://www.glasshotel.net/gh/ZipZip.mp3 And a few words from the Great One himself, in response to a question from me in February when Brian started seeking out the BBs album: Hi Bayard, I started gigging as The Beach Bullies - alone and with Jilly Fricke, an occasional singer I had known since Cambridge. Richard Bishop of Armageddon heard us playing support to the Soft Boys at a gig in 1980, and offered to put out an album on a sort of own label basis. Musclebound's only release was 'We Rule The Universe,' which featured Zip Zip, amongst ten or so originals, and a couple of covers. It was released in September 1980, and garnered a couple of quite nice reviews, one from Tom Hibbert, who thought well of the Soft Boys, even when they were unfashionable. I sold enough to be worth making a second, but the recession bit and Armageddon sank. The great lost second album - Songs Of Rare Beauty (or Hiding From Mummy - depended on my mood at the time!)was never released... There you go, and if you need any more info, just ask. You may be interested to know, I've written a novel called 'Diary Of A Rock,' in which the Soft Boys and Robyn turn up occasionally. The musician in the book has a band called 'The Insurgents,' based extremely loosely on my own experiences, and observations of fellow musicians at the time. The music is sort of a third to a half of the novel, which is sort of where are they now (and how did they gewt there?!) in a modern stylee. A few good folks have read it and most reports are favourable. I've had a couple of sniffs from agents, but nothing further yet... that's enough... "Coffee Skills" is a much better title. ===== "Being accused of hating America by people like Ann Coulter or Laura Ingraham is like being accused of hating children by Michael Jackson or (Cardinal) Bernard Law." -- anonymous . __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? My bad, but I will plead excessive curlies in the typestyle as a mediating factor. Did not really distract from the overall excellence of the disc, however. Speaking of fun with type, I noticed some strange things happening on the MLS scoreboard last night re: the L.A. v Colorado game, which was scheduled to start around 7:30pm . I was online when data started appearing mid-afternoon, including a game summary that started like this: ... Misconduct Summary: LA -- Dan Popik (caution; Dissent) 5 LA -- Dan Popik (caution; Game Disrepute) 5 LA -- Dan Popik (ejection; Second Caution) 5 ... For non-soccer buffs, the above means Mr. Popik was apparently awarded two yellow cards and the requisite red card ejection in the 5th minute of the game. This is exceedingly humorous when you consider that a) he is a goalkeeper; b) he is a recent A-league signing who has not played a single minute of MLS time, nor is he likely to anytime soon as a backup to 120-game starter Kevin Hartman; and finally, were he actually playing, he would have been c) facing a 2003 Colorado team that sucks fetid donkey bladders, one that would not have been expected anywhere near their opponents goal until say, halftime and thus incapable of inciting any sort of dissent. ... Referee: Jasen Anno Referee's Assistants: -Colin Arblaster; Cien Aseora 4th Official: Greg Barkey Weather: Sunny-and-135-degrees ... It also gets pretty damn hot in Colorado, from the look of things. He is interested in learning the program and then adding animation to one of his songs. As a web developer I use Flash (and Director, but that's not an actual animation program) but I'm not sure if that's the best program for him to use. I know there are several animators on the list so I thought you may have some suggestions for Matthew. Unfortunately I don't know what OS he's running - I asked him but haven't heard back from him yet. s.Mary np - Radiohead, "Hail to the Thief" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Jun 2003 16:17:07 -0400 From: stevetalkowski@mac.com Subject: Re: Mr Seligman asks...(0%RH, 100%MS) Hey Mary! Er, that's like asking for the "animate" button. (sorry, but I'm constantly having to educate highly paid ad "execs" about this same question all the time. ; ) Ok, here goes... It all depends, of course, on what his definition of animation is. Also, what are the requirements of the final output? (video digital frames to be used in an editing package like After Effects or an Avid, output to film, printed cels that will then be shot frame-by-frame on an animation stand, or animated .gif, .swf or Quicktime files for web usage, etc.) Does he simply want to take 2d stills and move them around the screen? Or, is he going to be drawing multiple frames and outputting them as an animated sequence (the more traditional, 2d cel animation approach - tell him to think "flipbooks"). Using Flash, he can scan in the images and perform simple 2d moves, rotations and scaling. Flash output is typically for website usage. After Effects goes many steps further, utilizing the Z axis (for 3-d movement) and many layers of compositing with numerous post effects available. After Effects outputs in many digital formats (.jpeg, .tiff, .tga, etc.) that enable the frames to be imported to other editing packages if needed. If he's comfortable doing a massive amount of drawing (i.e., thinking through the movement as a cel animator does) he might try Corel's Painter (now on version 8) which allows you to set up a "frame stack" which consists of a user defined amount of virtual "cels" on which to draw on. Then, utilizing the onion skin feature, which allows you to see your drawing up to 5 frames before and after the one being worked on, he can draw the object, advance one frame forward, draw the next object, etc., until creating an animated sequence. This will preserve the hand-drawn feel if that's what he's looking for. Alternatively, he can take the original drawings on paper (assuming he's drawn out a stack of images), scan them in and then use something like Quicktime and simply import an image sequence, which can then be exported into a variety of formats. > He is interested in learning the program and then adding animation to > one of his songs. Will the entire video be animated, or will he be cutting back and forth between live action footage? After Effects would be a great choice for the final composite, as he can import audio tracks and visually see the sound wave as an aid for lining up the drawings based on the beat and timings. Adobe Premiere and Final Cut also are options. I would ask him to specify what the desired output is first and then offer recommendations bast on that. With a little thought and pre-planning, the animation can be created and saved in such a way that will allow him to use it in multiple formats without having to re-draw, re-scan or re-composite. Now, if he said he wanted to recreate himself as a fully articulated 3d computer animated character, you could send 'im my way (i use Maya). - -Steve np - Yo La Tengo, "Summer Sun" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Jun 2003 16:36:53 -0400 From: stevetalkowski@mac.com Subject: Speaking of animation... (No RH) I caught a digitally projected screening of "Finding Nemo" on Friday night. Simply amazing work from the folks at Pixar! (which comprises quite a few of my ex Blue-Sky Studios colleagues and other friends and peers in the industry) Since I'm smack dab in the process of rigging phonemes for a character I was paying special attention to the outrageous lip shapes the varied sea creatures required and the sync was extremely well done. The voice talent was a good match, especially Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres. Director Andrew Stanton was also great as "Crush", the surfer dude sea turtle. The look of the water, the lighting, the action, the crazy attention to detail... the bar has been raised once more. Plus, the trailer for The Incredibles was, well, INCREDIBLE! And very funny. Really looking forward to seeing this one. For the animation aware, this will be Brad Birds directorial debut at Pixar. His previous contribution, the wonderful "The Iron Giant", was woefully under-marketed by Warner Bros. The Incredibles is a film about super heroes. 'Nuff said. I was curious as to which short, if any, would play before the movie - it was a censored Knick Knack! They removed the spherical boobs from both female characters. (gee, look - a reference to another off-topic thread!) The word's still out on whether Pixar already had a "G" version in hand or if they had to resurrect the 14 year old data and re-render those scenes. Overall, "Finding Nemo" is a very fun and, once again, innovative CG movie with a moving story. I'm sure fathers everywhere will closely identify with this one. (The film, not the boobs) By all means, try to catch it at a DLP screening - the differences between a native digital print and a transfer to film is astonishing. http://www.dlp.com/dlp_cinema/dlp_cinema_theater_search.asp - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Jun 2003 17:53:55 -0400 From: mike hooker Subject: off topic: need beginner guitar advice hi, i'm teaching myself to play guitar and could use some advice. so far, i've learned a few chords, but the problem is the lack of callouses on my fingertips. the pain i can deal with, the problem is that without hardened fingertips, i have to press so hard the strings embed themselves in the tips and the finger mushes out a bit , contacting the nearby string. at that point, the chord sounds like shit. do i just play until they eventually come, or is there any guitar players tip for accelerating the callous building process. thanks much have fun, Mike Hooker please see my music trading list at: http://hometown.aol.com/mhooker216/myhomepage/index.html being AOL, its doesnt always work. try later, or ask for a list ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Jun 2003 12:34:39 +0100 From: "Matt Sewell" Subject: Re: you really need to see this...
