I'm sure not layin' on. That's still the most-ripped-off-by-non-sucky-artists band of the last decade. >>Oh yeah, worst vocal performance ever? That award would go to Tom >>Clark's girlfriend, Kim Gordon. Yeah, but she's supposed to suck; that's the point. Sort of. Well, it would be lame if she sang really well, in any case. I admit that it bugs me when O'Rourke plays bass and she just sings as "frontwoman grabbing the mic" these days (whatever is the point of that?) but most aspects of the current live form of SY are so great that I give her a pass. For now. _______ Matt S: >>On the other hand Laurence from Ride, >>though I don't know what he's been doing all these years, is a diamond >>geezer... Loz was in Animal House, too. The less said the better. Not to do another round of Seligman-style "he said/she said", but a friend of a friend flew Lawrence into LA to work on his record (I'd say '95 or so), and said he basically refused to work and pretty much drank half the recording budget. I never met Lawrence myself, but I gathered he was still pretty pissed about how Ride ended and in a bad place. _____ Aaron: >>You're clearly not a fan of Mike Doughty, whose song "Firetruck" goes >>"Firetruck / firetruck / firetruck // firetruck / firetruck / firetruck". Damn, I was pretty sure that was the first song my 2-year old ever wrote, and now I find out it's a cover. Speaking of Punk Rock Baby (well, not really), didn't the just-mentioned Jason Faulkner recently release a anonymous "Baby Beatles" collection in the same vein? ___ Ross T: >>But the mistakes in the >>recent Stones remasters are bizarre -- the bad version of Ruby Tuesday, etc -- >>is quality >>control that bad, or is there always some element of wanting to keep >>something in reserve? Taking your points in reverse order, I think it's mostly poor quality control; I'm speaking from my experience as a member of the "vault manangement community" who hears about recalls and glitches and the like all the time, on all kinds of media. I know that the obsessive/completist contingent is out there waiting to be fleeced, but I don't think the major labels have developed the right pair of shears, nor are they interested in doing so. Otherwise our "fantasy out-of-print online subscription thing" would exist in some form. But I'm interested in the Stones reissue glitches. I steered clear of them due to the whole scary deal with both the US and UK versions being issued simultaneously and already having a fairly complete Stones CD catalog, but I thought that, multiple-version-completist-gouging aside, they were supposed to be okay. Other than "Ruby Tuesday", what else was wrong with them? - -Rex "please note that the Ride catalog has been deluxely reissued but Dylan's still not so much" Broome ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 May 2003 20:05:18 -0500 (CDT) From: gshell@metronet.com Subject: Re: Going to Miami Beach hey, get to the keys and otherwise just stay close to the water. basically anywhere from the keys and then the western coast, all the way to mobile, alabama. i went to miami specifically once. i haven't returned. the rest of florida is OK, even the atlantic coast side is tolerable north of miami. west palm beach has white sand and clear water and lots of old wealthy religious people. None of which are bad on their own. florida is lots of fun, except for miami. gSs ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 May 2003 19:05:20 -0700 From: Eb Subject: Re: Issues with reissues, etc. >Speaking of Punk Rock Baby (well, not really), didn't the just-mentioned >Jason Faulkner recently release a anonymous "Baby Beatles" collection in the >same vein? They used to be great live in the mid-'80s when Dave Conway was their singer and they all wore sparkly gold tops. Then they got all arty and over-rated. I think I got the full details from the John McDermott/Eddie Kramer book. Following the Isle of Wight gig, Cox's behaviour on the ensuing European tour became increasingly bizarre and led to the cancellation of the 14th September gig. Hendrix returned to London in a depressed state. There is a mystery about who he spoke to, and all sorts of conspiracy theories exist. The one I believe is that he asked Chas Chandler to come back and manage him again, but he was under pressure not to do this from his existing management. Anyway he died during the night of 17th / 18th. See and many other sites for a summary. - - Mike Godwin n.p. Do you have a recording of the Soft Boys on WFMU radio on 25-Oct-02 ? (Broadcast on 29-Oct-02) I just found it archived on their web site. The whole show is more than 3 hours - but the Softs only play live for a portion of that (~1 hr). There's also a bunch of RH studio material played, etc. If you want to grab it yourself, go to www.wfmu.org and search for the Soft Boys. If you have trouble, let me know & I'll burn a copy for you. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 2003 12:22:25 -0400 From: "Stewart C. I can snag the whole thing using vsound. I've just had a dig inside vsound, and it's rather elegant. I'm just listening to a broadcast of the second Music Tapes album* recorded with it last night. Stewart * - -- and it's much more listenable than the first. Really. It's a nice wee story about making clouds. Plus the show starts with an Ivor Cutler story. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 2003 17:32:19 +0100 From: Dr John Halewood Subject: RE: Soft Boys 25-Oct-02 (fwd) A Scotsman in a foreign land said: > http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/5540 > > The archive is only a 20K mono RealAudio stream, > chiz. I figure since it's a comp, that the correct album info should go in the Album tag (e.g., ""Spectre"), and the correct artist should go in the Artist tag (e.g., "The Minus 5"). So, when you insert the CD and CDDB retrieves the info, the CD will be titled "Spread That Dust: Odds & Ends - Volume 1", but each track will have it's own unique Artist and Album tags. Unless someone had major objections, this is how I'm gonna do it. - -tc ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 2003 13:44:56 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Odds & Ends Artwork Thanks to Marc & Greg, we have artwork for the CD's.
