On Thursday I'd seen the Go-Betweens and that show had been a somewhat of a letdown. I'm not really sure if that was because of me (i.e. me just not liking them as much as I used to) or them (not being as good and fresh as they used to be). Anyway, prior to last night's show I'd been a bit wary. It'd been more than three years since I last saw them, so who could tell? I shouldn't have doubted them and myself. A YLT show is still the most foolproof way for me to reach that pinnacle of mental states: the absence of thought. I hardly ever manage to stop thinking, so that is a big deal for me. The mesmerizing quality of their music never fails to affect me. Its alternation between soothing and, for lack of a better word, pushing elements is unparalleled. To wit, I thought that some of the tracks off "Summer Sun" don't lend themselves to a live setting as well as others; mostly because they are very layered and some of those layers are missing when played live as a trio. But that doesn't really detract from the overall experience. The other aspect of YLT shows that keeps on surprising me is how nice they are as persons. As I said previously, I hadn't seen them in three years, and while some of my friends actually stay in touch with them via e-mail, I don't. Nonetheless, every time we meet they give every appearance of really being happy to see us all. After the show we spent two hours backstage together. We talked about the political situation in the US; I was curious whether they thought that everyday life had been affected to an appreciable degree. They said that it had :-( I myself haven't been to the US for about six years, I guess. Hearing them talk about it didn't encourage me to go there, either. RH content: as you might know, Georgia used to be a huge Soft Boys fan. When Ira and Georgia first started out playing, they placed an ad in the Village Voice, looking for musicians for a band "that may or may not sound like the Soft Boys and Mission Of Burma". So of course I asked her about the reunion. She'd only seen them during the first reunion tour and thought it was OK, but not as good as the album. Ira said that they'd been to a Robyn Hitchcock show with Kimberley as guest, which they both thought was better than the Soft Boys show. They hadn't heard about the break-up, so I told them what I knew about it. Now for the rumor-mongering: the most exciting part of our conversation was the "news" that the Feelies' Glenn Mercer and Bill Million are said to be talking for the first time in a decade. There actually seems to be a chance of a reunion!! Georgia & Ira seemed to be even more excited about that than me :-) I now think that YLT's oeuvre is at least as important and influential as the Feelies', but when they started out, the Feelies probably were their most immediate idols. If this mythical Feelies reunion should come to pass, I would probably go to the US so as not to miss it. From what I hear, Brenda Sauter wouldn't be part of it. Now that more than ten years have passed, I feel that I can finally reveal that she used to be my girlfriend for three years (from '89 to '92). That's in part how I initially got to know Ira and Georgia. Anyway, Brenda and I aren't in touch anymore (although I visited them when I was in New York six years ago), but I'm told that she and her husband Rich Barnes have entirely withdrawn from the music scene. I got home at 2 am, but couldn't get to sleep before 3:30. I was lucky in that I only had to ride my bike for three kilometers to get home. Some of my friends had a two hour car ride ahead of them. Alright, I have rambled on more than enough, I guess ;-) - -- Sebastian Hagedorn PGP key ID: 0x4D105B45 Ehrenfeldg|rtel 156 50823 Kvln http://www.spinfo.uni-koeln.de/~hgd/ ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V12 #174 ********************************
