The common knowledge in Texas, true or not, is 5. The greatness of > America's past is not in question. I don't think I am being *terribly* defensive. I am just sick and tired of the reflexive America bashing that goes on here. My post was a response to the "Canada: just like the US minus the arrogance" posting, as well as Matt Sewell's gem that compared "many Americans" to the Taliban. This sort of thing is sloppy, it belies the complexities of the debate, and it cheapens the nature of this forum to discuss meaningful politics. And, yes, as an American, I get awfully sick of the overwhelming smugness I feel coming from some non-American, English-speaking quarters. I am not denying that the United States does not behave arrogantly -- especially given the bastards in charge right now. But still, there is a very distinct anti-American tone to this List, and it raises my hackles at times, as well as clouding rational discussion of very real and important issues. So yes, I might have been defensive. But then again, that's a natural reaction to being attacked. If America is home to arrogance, irresponsible power, rampant consumerism, and George W. Bush, it is also home to the list of people I posted, and the things they represent. America is more than its wars and SUVs and reckless leaders. While I don't expect every criticism of the US to need a qualifier, I am getting tired of these smug slogans that pass themselves off as wit.
