He will be memorialized at the Fleet Center (the replacement for the old Boston Garden) next week. Since stretches of time were given (10-1 and then 4-7, or something like that), I'm assuming that he will be, well, lying in state. I'm glad he got to see the Pats win last year. Jill ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jan 2003 01:52:26 +0000 From: "Maurer Rose, Inverse Nome" Subject: Breaking the Feg Law of Celebrety Inverse Proportion I think theres almost a law here that the bigger a celebrety is the less we discuss him or her or their work. The Feg law of Celebrety Inverse Proportion. But I do like to rock silly laws. I wrote this on a Who newsgroup -- might as well have it kick off discussion here, unless of course, Im the only one who will admit to having once been a big Who fan and to this rattling my cage. "I find myself extremely upset by this. Only time will tell if Townshend's denial of wrongdoing is true. I ardently hope it is, but then I hope that no child goes to bed hungry either -- so much for my hopes. What Im lookinging at is his admission to childhood molestation and to dealing with that in the last few years. I find this all hellishly disturbing because -- well, I've just assumed for quite a while that he was sexually abused as a child. Ive assumed that because of his songs. It is all over them, he's right there, its also shows up in his public persona. Id also assumed that he had probobly had all sorts of wonderful expensive therapy decades before now and that everything was all nice and ducky. Guess not. But really, you dont even have to look at "Tommy," the most obvious place. What keeps going on in my mind is one of my favorite songs in the world "the Kids are Alright." There is a certain profile, so to speak, of a person who was sexually abused as a child. One of the characteristics is a sense that in some way at some level one is lothsome(dirty, bad, guilty, wrong--get out your thesauruas, any of them will do.) In the song the protogonist feels this way and he seperates himself from the group and from the girl he's with so that the group and the girl can have a better time while he goes out to face his darkness alone. Alone. Thats the whole point. He dosnt want it contaminating the others. He deals with his darkness himself and chooses not to pass it on. The thought that the man who wrote this song might be guilty of paedophilia himself just makes the harmonies empty out into hell. Art and life shouldn't connect. But somehow they do. Its been alot of years since I was a Who fangirl but I don't want to have to wash my brain free of "Sunrise" or "There Once was a Note" or "Love Reign" or "Shout." Townshend has always been one of my favorite rock madmen. Foolish of me perhaps, but tts something about the combination of foolishness, in-your-face aggression, wit, theatrical sincerety, anger and humor. I'm glad he wouldn't get a knighthood(theres been too much of that all around) but I hate that this has happened. I hate what it might do to the songs. As for the man, if he's innocent, I hope it gets proven quickly and painlessly, and that when his book comes out and if he's written powerfully and honestly about himself, all praises and laud go to him. And if he's not innocent, let me be the first to suggest public castration. But mostly Im still amazed that if what he says is true or partially true, he's almost 60 and still struggling with the open wounds of his childhood. Its like the war never ends." Well, alrigth fellow fegs, call me 60s fangirl and start in with the "Pictures of Lily " jokes. Or just be really cool and say you couldnt care less.
