Not an upper by any stretch, but kinda nifty. Kind of scattershot, but it did put a lot of stuff onscreen that is generally glossed over in "relationship" movies. Also contained, I believe, Parker Posey's only topless scene to date (if not, do let me know). Underwater, no less. I saw it with about six friends of mine; we've all known each other forever, and although we're not as terminally messed up as the group of friends in the film, there were certain parallels. Anyways, we all were laughing hysterically during the charades scene, which hit very close to home. Everyone else in the theatre just seemed annoyed at us. Go figure. _________ Drew: >>When I hear something like "Gwyneth Paltrow is going to play Sylvia Plath" >>I instantly reach for my sick bag Wow... No listing on IMDB-- maybe it was something a friend of his did for a film class or something. Anyone else heard of this? ________ np: Echo & the Bunnymen, Crystal Days box set, disc 4, the rareties and live covers and whatnot. Yummy. If my 1987 self could have known that, fifteen years hence, he would receive box sets of both the Bunnymen and Camper Van Beethoven for Christmas, he would probably have assumed that a lot of stuff was going to go much better in the world of future music than actually has come to pass. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jan 2003 10:44:34 -0800 (PST) From: drew Subject: human actors From: "Rex.Broome" Drew: >>And Jackson has a head start because he has human actors >>playing the character, where Tolkien has to do it all in your head. > Oooh, I have a pretty sizeable philosophical disagreement with that, > Tolkien and Jackson aside. That's why we all have those moments of cognitive > disonnance when we hear about really bad casting of literary properties, > from whence spring endless internet protest petitions or a complete > desire not to see the film of one's favorite book, etc. All these things are true, but the context of my remark was the claim that Jackson took Tolkien's allegedly flat characters and made them three-dimensional, living, breathing "people." I have my reservations about whether this claim is even true -- Legolas, for instance, seems pretty damn flat in both media -- but if it were, I do think it helps to *see* humans in the roles. I'd agree that it can backfire if the actors don't look or behave correctly, but I don't think Jackson added much in terms of screenplay to flesh out the characters, and I don't think the performances were mind-blowing, just pretty good. So if any credit is due I think it must be due to the presence of actors. It certainly doesn't always work; some directors can blow that advantage pretty damn easily. Witness the film they made of Queen of the Damned, where pretty much every character is flatter in the movie than in the book (and when you're adapting Anne Rice it's incredibly difficult to make the characters flatter!). But at least QotD was better than the Netflick we watched last night: The Neverending Story 3. It really should have ended with the first movie, but y'all knew that. - -- drew at stormgreen dot com http://www.stormgreen.com/~drew/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jan 2003 14:03:17 -0800 From: Eb Subject: Funny becuz it's soo nasty http://www.buffalobeast.com/article.php?path=2002/09/&article=01_0 (I'm especially gratified to see Leno, Brokaw, Eisner, Oprah, Michael Eisner and Ken Burns included....) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jan 2003 14:13:59 -0800 (PST) From: Mike Swedene Subject: Re: Funny becuz it's soo nasty I didn't think anyone else read this. I saw him on HBO's Reverb and was immediately sold on this very fascinating and talented man. He has quickly become my favorite artist and I have bought every CD he has ever made. I have also bought the following videos and I want to make sure I am not missing anything else that is out there. Elixirs & Remedies Storefront Hitchcock Gotta Let This Hen Out If you can fill me in on where I can purchase any videos that I may be missing I would greatly appreciate it. Also, I've lived 32 years without even knowing about Robyn Hitchcock. I wonder what other great artists I may be missing out there. Are there any artists that are similar to him. I really enjoy artists who play acoustic guitar. Any suggestions? One of the 'station promo' ads for TVNZ's main channel (TV One) has the lyrics "look outside, it's summertime". I decided to look it up by a lyric search on the web when I heard a longer version of the same promo with lines like "look outside, you;'ll realise, it's summertime" or similar. Don't know if it's the original version or not, but it seems to be originally a FL song...
