My now ex-boyfriend took me to see the Soft Boys in New York and I had a GREAT time. They are a really cool band. The day after the concert I realized the only reason I hung out with my boyfriend was because he knew about cool stuff. But I figured, hey, I can know about cool stuff too LOL. I don't need to put up with him, and he can be REALLY aweful, just because I like going into the city and seeing bands. So I looked up Robyn and the Soft Boys on the Internet and found this list. You must all be really cool to like cult stuff like this so I bet I can learn about all sorts of new cool stuff here. I already miss Brian's(that was the jerk idiot's name)CDs. What other stuff is there out there that the Brittanys at school wouldn't know fuck- all about? I want to learn all the really cool stuff. I want to learn stuff even Brian dosnt know about but that people who are really cool know is really hot. Anyway, I have a newbie question. A *dynamite* show - quite possibly the best electric set I've >heard from RH and/or the boys in 15 years! I think they probably played as well as they did at Slim's the night before, but I wasn't as enthusiastic about the in-store. Might've been because I was tired, might've been the fact that we'd heard six of ten songs at Slim's, I dunno. I was happy to hear "I Love Lucy" (which sticks in my head and gets new sections and even more vocal melodies) and "Pulse of my Heart" (which is my favorite of the more straightforward tracks on Nextdoorland), but I've never liked "Vegetable Man" in any form. No, I would say the best electric set was this one, the ballbusting 21 songs from Slim's: 1. Hear My Brane 2. Kingdom of Love 3. Queen of Eyes 4. Mr. Kennedy 5. Mind Is Connected 6. Insanely Jealous 7. The Man With the Lightbulb Head 8. Chinese Bones (going out to Michele) 9. Narcissus 10. La Cherite 11. Sudden Town 12. I Want to be a Seven-Winged Bat (it did end with the drawn-out "Aaaan-gle-poiiiiise") 13. Underwater Moonlight (with an INTENSE showstopper "feed the fish" monologue) 14. Rock 'n' Roll Toilet ("for Keith Richards") 15. Bells of Rhymney ("we've been practicing this since 1976[?]") 16. I Wanna Destroy you ("dedicated to George W. Bush for the second year running") 17. Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again 18. Chapter 52 19. Om ("for George Harrison and Sterling Morrison") 20. If You Know Time 21. Only the Stones Remain This doesn't even capture the monologues, including a terrific one about Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha sitting on the sofa watching TV and eating chips, and a particularly sensitive intro to "Lightbulb Head" about how most songs are about the singer's prowess at either love or protection. >5. Mind Is Connected (with part of the bassline played by plucking the >string and then turning the tuning pegs rather than fretting the notes - >neat!) Yeah, that seems to be how he plays it -- I thought it was cool too. I have to admit that I miss that rapidly descending bassline in "Chinese Bones," though. I kinda wanted to stay and say hi and get some stuff signed, but I always feel really stupid doing that, and my girlfriend was as tired as I was, and anyway I was too moronic to bring something to be signed. So we grabbed our swag, paid for it, and left. It was nice seeing numerous fegs again this weekend! I apologize for my antisocial tendencies that keep me from hanging out more than I do; it certainly is not because fegs are not nice people. Nick and Mark asked about my budding second career as a comedian. If anyone is interested, these are the details: we do four shows every weekend in San Jose. All of them are group improv; three are ComedySportz shows (think Whose Line Is It Anyway?, with some more theater mixed in with the games), and the late show on Friday is no games and all improv theater (but still comedy-oriented). The ComedySportz shows are all ages; I would say kids 12 and up would enjoy them (though we've had younger), and it's the referee's job to keep them clean. The Friday Midnight Show is 18 and up and can get extremely raunchy. The web site is http://www.national-comedy.com/, at which almost all of your other questions can be answered. Tickets are cheaper in advance, which also gets you reserved seats. I play at least one show every weekend, usually two, though I've been known to do both Friday and Saturday nights. If you want to be sure I'll be there so you can heckle me (and be humiliated by the referee in return), let me know you're coming and I'll be able to tell you by Wednesday or Thursday what my schedule for the weekend will be. I would say that almost everyone there is funnier than I am; you won't be disappointed. - - Drew ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Nov 2002 11:22:09 -0800 From: "Michael E. Anything by Syd Barrett, if you're not familiar with him The albums "Talisman" and "Horse & Gaudylight" by Alastair Galbraith "Autogeddon" by Julian Cope "Singles Going Steady" by The Buzzcocks "Lone Rhino" by Adrian Belew "390 Degrees Of Simulated Stereo" by Pere Ubu "Rock And Roll" by Mekons "Moon Pix" by Cat Power "Sympathy For The Devil"and "Opus Dei" by Laibach (scare your parents with this one!) "Hergest Ridge" by Mike Oldfield "Blue Light Till Dawn" and "New Moon Daughter" by Cassandra Wilson "When Worlds Collide" by Thin White Rope Not that you should worry what other people are into or not into, but I guarantee you the Brittanys don't know any of those. Great albums all... but some may be an "acquired taste" and take a few listens. Definitely will expand your horizons some. Also, in case you've never heard it (and I occasionally meet people who haven't!) you need "The Rise and Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" by David Bowie. Yes, everybody you hate has heard it, and most of them probably even own it. But it's a great album anyway. I think Ive mentioned that I have a coworker who is an ardent Dylan fan, buys every book, recording, etc. Anyway, he just picked up a book called "Restless Pilgrim" on Dylan and Im taking a look at it. Its subtitle is "The Spiritual Journey of Bob Dylan." Alot of bios of cultural figures seem written to make some pet point of the author's(well, most books do, but with bios the question is how much does the pet point have to do with the subject of the book or with its writer) so I have a tendency to cruise such books, looking for actual incidents or quotes by the subject that seem interesting. Anyway this seems interesting in relation to The Soft Boys- "The soul never dies and neither does it know time." That caught my eye considering that theres a new SBs song with the title "If You Know Time." Theres may be no connection but ... Also, Id never quite put together for myself how often the theme of ressurection and return runs thru Dylans work from beginning to now, but by golly, it surely does. If Robyn's been listening to alot of Dylan in the last few years, the theme may have filtered thru, thou Robyn as his own artist redoes it in terms of his own artistry. Sorta like what we were talking about before -- the dif tween influencing and copying. Theres also this quote which I like so Ill throw it in even thou I cant come up with a proper Robyn connection, "As long as your exposing everything to the power that created you, people cant uncover too much." Thats pretty cool(howdy Greta, add Dylan to the other suggestions for cool:-) Kay It's amazing what you can learn from somebody's absence." Absolutely. It's a very rare occasion I will do something like that, but I ended up hanging out with Nick Cave for a couple of nights in Sao Paulo, Brazil, about nine years ago, and the second night I had to bring a camera and get a picture with him. Had to be done. Oh, he and Die Haut also signed the poster I grabbed from the show, but that was actually Jochen Arbeit's (Die Haut guitarist) idea. Incidentally, he was also Nick Cave's guitarist on the solo tour just before this last Bad Seeds tour.
