It's a pretty amazing story really. In 1994, I was working as the independent buyer for a small chain of record stores in Southern California. While perusing the used bins one day I came across a copy of the first Wrens album, Silver, and thought it looked interesting. After a listen, I bought it and couldn't listen to anything else at home for weeks. The album was nearly seventy minutes of post-Pixies rock energy that just knocked my socks off. I finally added it to stock at the store and proceeded to sell two dozen copies on word of mouth alone. One of those copies was sold to Richard & Stephanie Reines, a sibling duo who, at the time, produced the fantastic public access music program "Sideshow" (famous for interviewing Oasis and pretending they were Suede - the pair now runs Drive Thru). They promptly called Grass (the label that released Silver, not to mention bands like Brainiac and (pre-Bright Eyes Conor Oberst group) Commander Venus) to request a video for their show. The label couldn't understand how this New Jersey band who had never toured or released a record prior to this one was selling copies in Los Angeles. A week or so later, the drummer for the band, Jerry MacDonald, called the record store to thank me and then sent me a package with 7"s, a signed photo and t-shirts. We kept in touch for years and by 1996, just before their second album Secaucus was released, I had already moved to San Francisco and was making noise about starting a record label. They finally toured west and were opening for some Weezer side project at Bottom of the Hill. I sat in my car while the Weezer band played, listening to an advance cassette of Secaucus, amazed at their evolution in sound to a more layered (yet colorfully nuanced) pop. Everyone else at the time was making punk records (this was the commercial rise of pop-punk, remember) and the Wrens recorded a bizarre mix of Brian Wilson, Duran Duran, Kiss and, of course, the Pixies. Stellar. Their fanbase began to swell. An EP was released the following year, we talked about doing something together (old demos, an EP, a single - I reserved AK009 for them and you can spot their name in our ads from years gone by), they started work on record number three and, as far as the public was concerned, nothing happened for five long years. Five years!!! What you may not have known is that Grass became Wind-Up and began releasing Creed records. The Wrens were courted by a number of majors, including a prolonged rapport with Interscope that ended with the massive Universal consolidation and lay-offs. The album was recorded and re-recorded and re-recorded. Meanwhile, we'd been building our label into the industry powerhouse we are today (yep, we have three unpaid interns now). After much discussion, we are tremendously proud and excited to announce that we will be releasing The Meadowlands, the oh-so-long-awaited third album by the Wrens in mid-2003 (somewhere between April and May) and you can expect the boys to tour in support of release. Before the end of the year, we will have a limited edition mail-order-only version of the album with special covers and versions of the songs that differ from the commercial release. This is one unbelievable rock record. - ----- End forwarded message ----- ..Jeff J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html :: crumple zones:::harmful or fatal if swallowed:::small-craft warning :: They called him Ol' Solderhead 'round the neighborhood. 'Course no one outside the neighborhood knew who he was anyway, so they didn't call him nothin'. The story was that he started fixin' things for friends and neighbors, small things like toasters and electric can openers and clock-radios, then larger items like stereos, television sets, garage door openers. He fixed my cousin's Lite Brite once. But that was just the start of things. It wasn't that he got so good that there wasn't any more repairs to be done. Nah, shoddy manufacturing would make sure he had plenty to do in that old workshop of his. It was just something inside of him, something you could see him wearing on his face that told you he had more to build. He'd hole up in the workshop for days, even weeks, and you never knew what he'd emerge with, crazy looking things, but beautiful too. It wasn't a Noah's Ark-type of situation where divine inspiration was greeted by communal scorn. Nope. Ol' Solderhead's creations may have been passed down by a greater power, but folks 'round the neighborhood recognized them for the special things they were. Why, this one time, nobody'd seen Ol' Solderhead for darn near six weeks when one day, just as the sun was going down, he came lumbering down the street from his workshop holding what looked like a NEW UPDATE FROM ABSOLUTELY KOSHER RECORDS. In this update: * WE HAVE A NEW E-MAIL ADDRESS: MACHER@ABSOLUTELYKOSHER.COM* OUT NOW- FRANKLIN BRUNO, JIM YOSHII PILE-UP, XIU XIU, PINBACK* ABSOLUTELY KOSHER HOOKS UP WITH THE WRENS FOR A NEW ALBUM!!!* 2003 SNEAK PEEKS!* TOUR DATES - THE SWORDS PROJECT, THE MOUNTAIN GOATS! * WE'RE STILL GIVING AWAY FREE CD SAMPLERS!* VISIT OUR MERCHANDISE PAGE! ____________ NEW E-MAIL ADDRESS We're sorry for the sudden change, but it was sprung on us too. We had that old fatkid address since we got online, which is a pretty long time in these troubled times for ISP's. Yes, we're even sentimental about an e-mail address. In any case, please update all records, mailing lists, etc. with our new e-mail address, macher@absolutelykosher.com. ____________ OUT NOW: Franklin Bruno - A Cat May Look At A Queen CD. The maestro returns with a beautifully arranged record of erudite pop, part tin pan alley, part Go-Betweens. Members of Calexico and Refrigerator help out, not to mention Tom Larkins of Jonathan Richman's band. Please check out recent related releases: Jenny Toomey - Tempting: Sings the Songs of Franklin Bruno, featuring the former Tsunami singer performing lushly arranged cabaret versions of Franklin's songs and The Extra Glenns - Martial Arts Weekend, Franklin's collaboration with the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle. We also stock more of Franklin's solo output as well as much of his work with Nothing Painted Blue. The Jim Yoshii Pileup - Homemade Drugs CD. "Sometime it feels good to feel bad." - www.fortdrastic.com. Nine new tracks of exquisitely maudlin, gorgeously delicate heavy pop that shifts the band away from their earlier guitar wash sound and into the realm of the sublime. Recorded earlier this year with engineer Scott Solter (The Court and Spark, Tarentel) to remarkable results. The JYPU just finished their first national tour and the response has been great. Please check out recent related releases: the Burning Flag tour EP (all non-album material including a cover of Cat Power's "King Rides By") and the long-awaited split 7" with Wussom Pow!, plus their first album It's Winter Here. Xiu Xiu - Chapel of the Chimes CDEP. Also hot off the road is the mighty Xiu Xiu, touring in support of this new five song CD. Several of the tracks are even sparser than albums barest songs. Blunted house beats seemingly recorded several rooms away provide the barest suggestion of structure as Jamies fertile tenor, a cross between Talk Talks Mark Hollis, Pere Ubus David Thomas and The Cures Robert Smith, bursts forth. The vicious Jennifer Lopez is a beast with its skin off, all teeth and sinew glistening in the sun. The EP closes with a reckless cover of the Joy Division/New Order classic Ceremony. Please check out their full length Knife Play on CD or limited LP with a fold out poster. Pinback - - Some Voices CDEP. Reissue of the in-between-albums EP from that hot new group that's sweeping the nation and one of their strongest and most consistent releases to date.. Includes the wonderful "Manchuria." Originally released by Tree, now with new inner tray art. We carry all of Pinback's releases as well as the full catalogs of related bands like Thingy, Optiganally Yours and Three Mile Pilot. See below for more Pinback news. Other exciting releases now available on our merchandise page: The Mountain Goats - Tallahassee CD. Brand new hi-fi Mountain Goats album on 4AD, out November 5th. From Yvonne: "Our main focus is vegan-friendly footwear and accessories, but we are also carrying all the comics and music available at the zumonline store (www.zummedia.com) as well as cool handmade oddities. We're located at 3253 16th Street between Guerrero & Dolores. You can find more info about the store at www.veganmart.com. For out-of-towners, we do not have online ordering set up yet, but will soon. Hope to see you in the store!" Meanwhile, a touring guise of Xiu Xiu (consisting of singer Jamie Stewart along with Sam & Jarick of Seattle, WA's awesome band The Sweet Science) is just finishing up a national tour in support of their new CD (see above) Chapel of the Chimes. The band continues to wow fans and alternately dismantle and stump critics. ____________ SEE YOU NEXT YEAR: In addition to the aforementioned Wrens album, we have some incredibly exciting releases planned for 2003. Below, you'll find the first three. After that, you can look forward to the third album and ultimate masterpiece by Philadelphia's Eltro entitled Past and Present Futurists, the debut by Charlottesville, VA's Bottom of the Hudson, The Omaha Record and new albums by Thingy, Jukeboxer, Optiganally Yours and more. We promise to keep you posted. SUMMER AT SHATTER CREEK We're very excited about the release of the self-titled debut by Summer At Shatter Creek on January 28th. SASC is one Craig Gurwich, a resident of Los Angeles by way of Kalamazoo, MI. He's been sending us demos for a year and a half and they just kept getting better and better, real sweet and warm and intriguing. His voice is what you'll notice first, a gorgeous and graceful high tenor rivaling Jeff Buckley or Thom Yorke. Then you'll pick up on the arrangements of his songs, full of colorful swashes of organ and highly creative sonic nuance, as well as the tunes themselves, like campfire songs at the side of the highway or the rebirth of the AM band. One of the tracks off the album, the stunner "My Neighbor's Having A Seizure" will be featured in the December/January issue of RES magazine. PINBACK The EP of new Pinback material which we've been discussing for some time is now slated for release on February 25. There's also another EP planned for release on the Ace Fu label, but we couldn't tell you when that will come out. The planned b-sides comp has been pushed back to an undetermined date, most likely after the band's next album, their first since signing to Touch and Go. Confused yet? Don't sweat it. You know as well as I do that it will all be amazing. The as-yet-untitled Absolutely Kosher EP will contain "Victorious D" as well as four or five other brand new songs. Pinback will be touring again in March. TWO GUYS Also slated for release on February 25 is Recorded, the debut album by Two Guys, also known as ex-Thingy/Pinback/Physics member Cameron Jones and his brother Ryan. The album was just mastered by John Golden and it sounds just incredible. A furious pop record whose melodies are held together by intricate math-prog arrangements and Cameron's impressive tenor wail. Hear "Hypocrite" on our new sampler. This album will be released in Europe by our friends at Zeal Records out of Belgium. ____________ TOUR FRANKLIN BRUNO November 1, Los Angeles, CA - Sea Level Records, in-store, 7 p.m. November 9, Los Angeles, CA - Spring Tower Bank Building (Ladyfest L.A.) accompanying Jenny Toomey THE COURT AND SPARK Thursday, November 14 @ Cafe du Nord, San Francisco, CA w/ Bobby Bare Jr. JACK HAYTER Saturday, November 30th - Brighton Prince Albert, With Matt Ward, Trafalgar Street, Brighton UK 07732 369837 THE SWORDS PROJECT * w/ The Gloria Record 11-3 Denton, TX Rubber Gloves * 11-4 Oklahoma City, OK Green Door * 11-5 Lawrence, KS Replay Lounge * 11-6 Columbia, MO Mojo * 11-7 Chicago, IL Abbey * 11-8 Milwaukee, WI Cactus * 11-9 Minneapolis, MN 7th Street Entry * 11-12 Seattle, WA Crocodile * 11-13 Portland, OR Black Bird * 11-14 San Francisco, CA Bottom Of The Hill * 11-15 Pomona, CA Glasshouse * 11-16 Los Angeles, CA Spaceland * 11-17 San Diego, CA Casbah * 11-18 Tucson, AZ Skrappy's * 11-20 Denver, CO 15th Street * 11-21 Omaha, NE Sokol Hall * 11-22 Des Moines, IA Frank's * 11-23 Detroit, MI Lager House * 11-24 London, ONT Call The Office * 11-25 Toronto, ONT Horseshoe * 11-26 Montreal, PQ La Salla Rossa * 11-28 Boston, MA TT The Bears * 11-29 New York, NY Knitting Factory * 11-30 Philadelphia, PA Khyber * 12-1 Cleveland, OH Grog Shop * 12-2 Nashville Blue Sky Court * 12-3 Dallas, TX TBA * 12-4 Austin, TX TBA * 12-9 San Luis Obispo, CA TBA 12-10 Oakland, CA The Oakland Metro w/ Track Star, City Volume12-11 Chico, CA Moxies 12-13 Seattle, WA TBA 12-14 Spokane, WA TBA 12-15 Moscow, ID TBA PINBACK Thursday October 31st - San Diego, CA @ the Westin Horton Plaza Hotel - Halloween Show, 8pm XIU XIU Monday October 28, Bellingham, WA @ the Factory w/ The Sweet Science and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone THE MOUNTAIN GOATS Nov 1, 2002 - Chicago, IL @ The Empty Bottle (w/ John Vanderslice) Nov 3, 2002 - Cleveland, OH @ The Grog Shop (w/ John Vanderslice) Nov 4, 2002 - Hamilton, NY @ Colgate University/Donovan's Pub (w/ John Vanderslice) Nov 5, 2002 - Cambridge, MA @ TT the Bears (w/ John Vanderslice) Nov 6, 2002 - - NYC, NY @ The Knitting Factory (w/ John Vanderslice) Nov 7, 2002 - Washington, DC @ The Black Cat (w/ John Vanderslice) Nov 8, 2002 - Greensboro, NC @ Gate City Noise (INSTORE) (w/ John Vanderslice) Nov 8, 2002 - Carrboro, NC @ Go! After the show at the Bowery Ballroom, I hung out with some friend (non-feggies) in the 1st floor bar having a last drink of the evening. All the boys came out and were hanging around too. I took the opportunity to have them all autograph my copy of "Side 3." I spoke with Robyn for a few minutes but didn't want to keep him long from the brandy that he just got from the bartender. While Kimberly and Morris were signing my cd, I spoke with Matthew. I told him I was on the feg list. He said that he reads the posts from time to time and had conversed at length with Eb. He said that he was a bit upset about some criticism that Eb posted - something about his 1 note bass playing. I asked him if he had seen the paper dolls page that I had done a while ago. He said he had. He also told me that I needed to update the Fulham football jersey because they had a new sponsor. Then he asked me if I could add Daisy, his daughter, to the page. So he broke out some pictures from his wallet and gave me one to use. I commented that I liked the orange striped shirt he was wearing and he said his wife made it. I told him he was lucky to have such a talented wife. I went back to my friends - didn't want to usurp Matthew from his fans and plus I didn't want my friends to think I deserted them. A bit later, Matthew joined us until the lights came up and we were all forced to leave. At one point he asked if I could scan more pictures of Daisy for him. He had some that were starting to get a bit worn - the proud papa must be showing her off to everyone! Matthew asked if it was possible to get the pictures back to him the next day because he didn't want to be away from her for too long. I told him sure so he gave me his hotel info and we planned to meet up the next afternoon. So I scanned the photos and went to meet Matthew on Sunday. I rang his room and he met me in the lobby. He said he had some time before meeting with Laura - the Softboys.com person and did I want to go for a drink. So we headed for a bar where he had been interviewed the other day for a bass player magazine. I asked him if he was going to be on the cover and he said they didn't take even one picture. While walking to the bar he said something about not always drinking all the time but when touring with a band, you have to live that rock and roll lifestyle. Some topics that we talked about - the music industry, leaving law to live the life of a rock and roll superstar, working at home, Charles Dickens, the new song that the Soft Boys played on Sunday night, a live SB record, creating websites, the overwhelming success of Snail in Shanghai and China, moving to Japan, foreign language versions of their recordings, softboys.com vs. thesoftboys.com, and he asked me my opinion about Robyn solo vs. Robyn with the band. He was curious as to the fan's reaction to Robyn - does it differ depending on the type of show. Does our view of him change, is the dynamic different? So, I'm now passing the question on to all of you. And Matthew, if you happen to be reading this, I'm sure I'm not doing a good job of explaining your question, so please restate it if possible. Anyway, this tale all come back around to Daisy. She's now with Matthew on the paper dolls page and yes, the football jersey has been updated too. For your enjoyment... http://www.loona.net/sb Enjoy. Even if they are doing the same songs, the color is different with ye olde Soft Boys Chemistry. Seeing Robyn Solo is almost...hmmmm, like seeing a performance artist and one that I love to see. Seeing the Soft Boys is like seeing a kick ass hard rock band that actually makes me think, at least more so than most bands do. That's my 2 cents which are worth about 2 cents. Max I don't know about Eb's criticism of Mathews bass playing but I would say he sure has the chops back in comparison to the last tour(when I thought he did well too). _________________________________________________________________ Get a speedy connection with MSN Broadband.
