Somehow I was able to scoop up tickets on-site for Mike and Katie! We went in, found the others and positioned ourselves. The two sets were great, I didnt notice that Robyn's voice was tired but here were some things I did notice: After the Boys took the stage Katie's comment to me about Robyn "He's old but he's still a hottie. Love the haircut." Thats right, Robyn is now officially a teeny-bopper's "hottie." With good hair;-) I am a moronic yob. Or rather, Im a gregarious drunk who giggles too much. I gather at one point I was talking and giggling and I got "the look" from Robyn. I didn't notice(Mike told me later), which was good, cause like I said, Im a gregarious drunk and would probobly just have stuck my tongue out and waggled my ears back, which would have been an idiot thing to do. Now that Im back in my typical dank, drab existence I'm repentant and wish I'd shut the fuck up. Maybe I should start wearing a gag to concerts. With a Soft Boys logo on it, of course;o) Of all of Robyn's songs the one that truely unnerves me is "Lightbulb Head." I used to think I's outgrow this but as I learned Friday -- I havent so far. The lighting effect, which had half of Robyn's face pink, and half purple was grotesque in a good way. He wore a shirt I havent seen for the second set(first set was lizard shirt.) Matt has lost weight from the last tour, and got rid of the white tee-shirt for a golden brown button down shirt-- good color on him,he moves around more than most bass players and --o yeah, Katie thought he was cute too. Morris had on a tshirt with french writing on it and seems to lean alot to the left while playing. Is there a technical reason for this? Kimberly had on a small flower pink and black shirt he wore for the last tour and is now ahead of me in the search for a good conditioner. In fact, they were all in good hair. Oh, and Katie thinks Kimberly is a really cool boy'sname. I know all the males on the list have winced thru the last 2 paragraphs but visuals do count. And playing ? They were very tight. Matt's chunky bass really filled in properly under the inticate guitars and Morris will go done in some hall of fame as"the impeccible drummer." In fact, before starting one song Robyn made a joke about how really only Morris and Matt understood the timimg, he and Kimberley just faked it. In between sets I was sitting on the risers, talking to Kathy Lang and Ken Weingold and looked up and realised the audience was 4/5ths male. I pointed this out to Kathie and said "Whats wrong with us?" (meaning why do we not like typical "chick" music") and Ken, who is great, broke in with "No, its whats right about you." But really, I do wonder if all the audiences are that heavily male and well, why? The songs talk to me about what it means to be human, what it feels like. And since they talk to me where I live, they're very cathartic for me. Girl or no. And most of all I just realized all over again what a great rock n roll band they are. The sounds just fit together right and make you move. For the life of me I cant understand why more people, (besides more women) dont realize that they are one of the best bands around. You know what would blow my little mind? Katie suggested it to me and I realized it would be heaven. Covering a Beatles song -- and not a late with surrealistic lyrics and odd instrumentationm beatles song but ... "She Loves You" or "Help" or "I Wann Hold Your Hand" or ... any of the simple early ones with great harmonies. Any of the ones that took my little childhood heart and blew it away(and theirs, since we're of similar vintage.) I cant think of many bands who could really pull it off -- they could. I think Ive gushed sufficently now, Kay the Enthusiastic _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Oct 2002 18:51:02 -0600 From: Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey Subject: Re:Maxwell's 10/25 or shirt news Quoting Montauk Daisy : > After the Boys took the stage Katie's comment to me about Robyn "He's old > but he's still a hottie. Maybe the "national news" elements of this tale have a wider appeal. Tonight, I went to see the Residents. At the local House of Blues, within the Downtown Disney mall. In Anaheim. It wasn't until the night before that I knew the show would coincide with the seventh game of the World Series. In Anaheim. Not only that, but I recalled that ESPN Radio has been doing post-game broadcasts from Downtown Disney. Whew. Got to Downtown Disney, and there was a flashing sign saying the parking lot -- which has been about 25%-35% empty, every other time I've been there -- was full, and only valet parking was available. Ugh. I drove past that gate, and parked about three-quarters of a mile away on a dingy residential street. Jogged back from there (thank heavens for my new fitness), entered the mall strip and was instantly greeted by, oh, 1500 or so berzerk fans standing or sitting in the middle of the plaza, watching the baseball game via a large projection screen on the ESPN center's marquee. A pretty startling scene. I managed to squeeeeeze around the outer edge of that throng and walked onward to the House of Blues, only to find another thousand watching the game on a *second* screen. Directly in the space outside the HoB. I was expecting a big crowd (especially after hearing the parking lot was full), but this sailed past my expectations. At this point, the game was in eighth inning and the crowd was completely wired. Frenzied cheers with every strike and every out for the Giants. All those damn plastic sausages waving and banging in the air (oh wait, they're called *thundersticks* [groan]), and red clothing everywhere. I was feeling really torn about the Residents show at this point, because the outdoor scene was such a unique happening. On top of that, I had guest-list troubles, so I was *really* wondering whether to bail out of the show and just hang with the celebration. But I figured the overlap between the two events might be slim enough not to be a conflict. I did some fast talking, and found someone to admit me after a few other misfires. But once inside, the concert still hadn't started. So, I just hung out on the House of Blues balcony, watching the people-sea below me rocking with the game's developments. (There was an odd bit of incongruity, because the House of Blues was showing the game on their own monitors, except they were showing it via local TV while the large screens were using satellite transmissions. As a result, the large-screen broadcast was a couple of seconds behind the House of Blues version, so *my* immediate crowd would cheer/boo a second or two before the larger group would.) The game pressed on, and the clock moved past 8 pm (when the Residents were scheduled to start). Around 8:10 pm, the Giants were within their last three outs, and the Residents still hadn't began. I wondered if the band had called an audible (pardon the mixed sports metaphor), and decided to wait until the game ended. After all, they *are* from San Francisco. But, no. They started around 8:17 pm, when there were still two outs to go. I darted back and forth a few times, burning a bundle of stairwork calories in the process, and did manage to see the final out of the game. And of course, the resulting pandemonium below. Wow. Actually, I was a little surprised at how quickly the crowd started dispersing once the game ended, but that's the Disney environment for ya. No one's going to be breaking windows, burning fires and throwing beer bottles on the *Disney* grounds. Though I *did* see the police arresting a slumped-over drunk, just outside the venue. I hopped back and forth some more times, going between the celebration and the Residents gig. Talk about a clash of demographics. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that few other Residents fans gave a darn about the game. What there were of them, anyway -- the room was only about 40% full. The first floor was about a third empty, and the entire second floor was shut off except to special badgeholders. I entertained fantasies that Paul McCartney (who's in town) had cordoned off that whole area to himself so he could finally Meet The Residents, but if Sir Paul was up there, I didn't spot him through the glass. ;) However, David J (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets) *was* in the crowd below...seems like I was the only one who gave him a second look. The dude has bleached-blonde hair now, and it looks a lot more "tossled" than in the past. He's as thin as ever, though! My attitude toward the concert was sort of poor, since my mind was still half-curious about what insane celebration was going on outside. But I will say this was definitely my least favorite of the three Residents shows I've seen. The music was good enough -- the Residents' new album is amazingly melodic and accessible -- but it just didn't have the visual flair of the other two dates. The stage and performers were dressed to create sort of a guerrilla-warfare ambience. The players all wore customized camouflage fatigues, and the backdrops were composed of fencing strewn with more green camouflage material. The players wore various kinds of military headgear, and the two lead performers (one male, and one female with exaggerated, conical breast prosthetics a la Madonna) had big-nosed "stage masks" which left their mouths and jaws uncovered. There was also one "utility player" who fulfilled various minor roles, wearing a red leotard and a tacky bald-old-man mask. Usually, he was roaming around the stage with a handheld spotlight, lighting the singers from close range and giving the area a spooky "flashlight beams weaving through the dark jungle" atmosphere. He also played a few warbling trumpet calls between tracks, and did some interpretative dancing. But...the visuals never developed beyond that. No projections, no additional props, no additional costumes. Seemed kinda low-concept for a Residents show. Maybe the smaller stage was a factor, but in any case, I was feeling a bit impatient with the performance's lack of evolution. And I was already distracted by the World Series, from the start. Note: There were seven performers in all -- the instrumental nucleus was a cramped area with four performers. The lead guitarist sat, the others stood. One played guitar and keyboards, another played keyboards and another played the band's typical synthetic mallet instrument. It seemed to me like this show was just begging for an encore tune from the Disney catalog -- c'mon, how could the Residents perform at *Disneyland* and not acknowledge this bizarre circumstance? -- but no, this didn't happen either. I was left to imagine a Residents version of "When You Wish Upon a Star" for myself. I don't believe any Residents "classics" were played at this show -- the setlist heavily concentrated on the new album. Admittedly, I wasn't following the lyrics as well as I should have, but much of the action centered around "romantic tension" between the male/female singers. In another memorable scene, the female sang a tune while rocking the red-leotard weirdo in her lap. To be honest, I grew a bit tired of his oppressive udd...oops, I mean oppressive penis bulge. I don't think the dude was wearing any undies, and allllll his contours were illuminated. The show ended after a hour and a half or so. I jogged back to my car, and started driving home. Except that I decided to detour east into the meat of Anaheim, to survey the celebrations. And yes, this was partially because I saw two police cars and an ambulance headed that way! The irony was that the police sirens were drowned out by the *other* cars, in this case. If I added up all the car horns I've heard in my life before tonight, it would be about one quarter of the honks I heard while driving through this zone. Wow. People hanging out car windows, cheering. People screaming on street corners, holding up banners. Cars honking at those street corners. Cars honking everywhere. Those blasted "rally monkeys" being wriggled everywhere. Whoops, yells, cars carelessly painted with "Yes We Did" and other things. One teen kid was even flashing his ass at the passing cars! Meanwhile, I was listening to ESPN Radio as I drove, and hearing the sportscasters speak from the same glass-walled studio I had observed inside the ESPN center, just 15-20 minutes earlier. Just as when I had been there, the lead guy kept wandering outside into the ESPN restaurant area, baiting the crowd with various questions like "What do you think of Barry Bonds?" (Answer: BOOOOOOOOOO.) Strange thing happened, though...the traffic slowed, and right about then, the radio announced that there was a serious problem at a McDonald's at Katella and St. College. I was headed right for Ball and St. College, which I believe is one block south of the problem intersection. I still haven't heard exactly what happened, but the radio was sketchily reporting that some careless Angels fan was hit by a car and killed! I'll have to check the paper tomorrow. In any case, the police made everyone turn around in the middle of the block, and head back in the opposite direction. What a traffic snarl. At this point, I didn't need any more excitement. I headed home, still surrounded by honks. And yes, I hit the horn button several times, myself! Spent Saturday night watching the Chills (line-up 9357) performed to a good house at the Arc. Tight, swirling, excellent. Many old favourites and some surprises ("February"!). "Night of chill blue" has never sounded so psychedelic, with a thrumming drum pattern that - in the small venue - made the walls reverberate. Once again failed to remember that it is impossible to dance to "Effloresce and deliquesce". Joyous surprise for the night was a cover of the La's "There she goes". As usual they did one left field cover (no, not a Leftfield cover, a... oh never mind), this time Neil Diamond's "Solitary man". A few new songs, including (approximate Martin P. quote) "a cheerful one to make you all happy about the black void which will one day swallow the entire universe". Oddly nothing at all off Soft Bomb that I recall, but plenty from Brave Words, Submarine Bells and Sunburst. Some banter between M.P. and one over-enthusiastic fan who kept on yelling out "Pink Frost". At first Martin claimed it wasn't one of theirs but was a Clean song. Then when the fan started singing it Martin said "oh...that's nice tune, but the words aren't much good. And it needs a better singer." The one gripe I'd have is that it was TOO FYQING LOUD. Admittedly on the swirly songs it worked well - and the fast ones, like "Look for the good in others", but a lot of the time any subtlety that might have been there in the 'quieter' ones like "Streets of forgotten cool" was lost. Other songs played that I can recall included "Dan Destiny..."; "Come home"; and "Heavenly pop hit". That's all I can say for certain (I wasn't taking notes).
