Well, sort of. Given the fact that various Softies have played sideman to Hitchcock over the years, they never exactly went away. Still, it's good to have them back as a band, especially as their brand of effervescent guitar pop has emerged pretty much intact. While none of the songs on Nextdoorland display the adrenaline burn of, say, "I Wanna Destroy You," the album easily stands as the best thing any of them have done in years. Hitchcock pares back his trademark lyrical whimsy just enough to give the proceedings a bit of an edge, while occasional interludes of informed and intricate guitar interplay actually succeed in leading these seasoned veterans into what, for them, is previously unexplored sonic terrain. Welcome back, Soft Boys. And please, won't you stay awhile? - - Rod Smith ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Oct 2002 13:34:10 EDT From: DougMash@aol.com Subject: RE: Maxwell's Set List Wow, nice set! Hope Robyn's voice holds up & they play that long tomorrow night. I want to see the guys in a small place, and getting out to Hoboken was a little too tough logistically. Only problem with the set is where are "I Wanna Destroy You" and "He's a Reptile?" I know LAST year's shows were to promote UM, but these should be staples of the set. Also, any sign of "Wey Wey Hep Uh Hole" showing up in the encores? That would be fun to hear! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Oct 2002 13:05:36 -0500 (CDT) From: gSs Subject: Re: fegmaniax-digest V11 #340 On Fri, 25 Oct 2002, chain-wallet bitch wrote: > Huh? i just pictured an attractive girl in faded yellow denim jeans with worked leather boots and a black tank top on an old honda 750 with a long smooth chain wrapped around her waist that attached to her wallet and was, but for a moment aroused. silly, yeah i know. gSs ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Oct 2002 15:37:48 -0400 From: Ken Weingold Subject: Re: Maxwell's tapers request. But she was good enough to try the one I got from Matthew to confirm that it was in fact beer. I wasn't convinced. It was some liquid that was almost transparent and filled with ice. As Kathy said, it tasted like college beer. Oh well, it was wet. - -Ken ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Oct 2002 16:58:32 -0400 From: "R. I don't disagree with anything you said (indeed, I'm happy enough to financially support those guys that I bought Matthew's other band's (Snail) cds -- not because I know anything about them or their sound, but just for the sake of boosterism (meaning that, if it turns out to be good music -- a good possibility -- I got nothing but gravy going on). But, for me you ask the wrong "Side Three" question; I would ask: why relegate to the "bonus" disc several songs (Ruling Class, Narcissus, OM) which are considerably better tunes (IMNSHO) than several slotted on the commercial release (La Cherite, Japanese Captain, Lions & Tigers)? Well, it doesn't matter for me at this point -- I'm now free to program the ideal "Nextdoorland" on my iPod. - -ed oh, and for those keeping score, my son won his soccer game, 4-2, scoring a goal and an assist. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Oct 2002 17:32:38 -0400 From: mary Subject: Sat. 26 - Bowery Ballroom If anyone is coming to the show and still is getting email, my friend and I will be going to dinner at a place called Lombardi's at 8pm: 32 Spring Street, between Mott and Mulberry, 6 train at Spring St. http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/7108110/ Come join us if you can. Seems I was right. I want him back! He's ours by rights! He is actually still signed by Bayer Leverkusen, but he doesn't want to come here anymore and the club doesn't want to force him - which is probably a good idea ... Anyway, right now Leverkusen could really use him. The last season is catching up with the team. Ballack and Ze Roberto are playing for Bayern M|nchen now (and I'm full of Schadenfreude that they are about to get kicked out of the Champions League!). The ones who have stayed on are visibly exhausted from last season and the World Cup. I was actually worried that they might be relegated at the end of this season, but they're too good for that. So I guess they'll end up in nowhereland (which reminds me that I *still* don't have NDL!) In other news I just returned from Copenhagen where I attended Cisco Networkers. Copenhagen is a lovely city, but the weather was pretty bad. I'd like to return there in the summertime. Networkers was overwhelming. More than 3,000 people crammed into exhibition halls to attend seminars, sessions, keynotes and lunch. I learned a lot (I hope!), but was glad when it was over. So many people in one place are not my idea of a good time.
