But that wasn't even for reissues-- they were issued that way the first time around. Remember the Ryko Elvis Costello reissues, where they put a gap between the record and the bonus tracks and included a note to the effect that this gap was meant to "simulate the listening experience of the original album" (or something)? I never knew if that note was meant to be funny or not, but it always made me laugh... However, the "randomize" button is my friend. Only for vast quantities of discs, though. I would never randomize a single disc... or for that matter a carousel of like five or seven. Has to be a sizeable playlist there. Does anyone actually "program" discs? The group could match almost any punk band for sheer energy, and just about anyone else for pop catchiness, but other elements left the category-minded scratching their headsnamely, singer Robyn Hitchcock's spoken-word interludes, the long jangle of Kimberley Rew's guitar, and the whole enterprise's willingness to indulge in oddness. Johnny Rotten famously wore a shirt that read "I Hate Pink Floyd," but here was a crew that had obviously spent time worshipping at the altar of Syd Barrett and company. At a time when the word "psychedelia" was verboten, The Soft Boys found value in the style, spinning absurd lyrics into loud, pithy songs, as if the '60s and the '70s were somehow taking place at the same time. The group didn't last much longer than it took to record two albums, including the 1980 classic Underwater Moonlight, but it made a deep impression on the decade that followed. Both R.E.M. and The Replacements, essentially the Beatles and Stones of '80s college rock, acknowledged their gratitude, and the group staked out a territory that Hitchcock continued to explore throughout his memorable (and ongoing) solo career. The group has reunited periodically for live shows throughout the past decade, but Nextdoorland marks its first new album in more than 20 years. One reference to Sebadoh aside, it wouldn't be difficult to pass off as a mildly disappointing unreleased Soft Boys album from 1981. The band remains an inspired combination of elements: Hitchcock's vocals work hand-in-glove with Rew's guitar to instant and often gripping effect. "Pulse Of My Heart" and "Mr. Kennedy" provide two early highlights, but the album needs more memorable songs, and coasts too often on the mood the group creates. But it's still a mood that only The Soft Boys can summon up: a sense of resignation to disappointment, combined with amazement at the beauty to be found in looking at the world askance. That's enough to make this a return worth welcoming. If we say an average CD is 52 minutes long, and we use that $13 price (a bit low for a lot of people), that's a dollar every four minutes, or a quarter per minute. So your thirty-minute CDs would cost only $7.50, but your hip-hop extravaganzas with two CDs at 78 minutes each? Thirty-nine bucks. There. Are you happy? Oh wait - I'm forgetting the extra cost in accounting for this to happen - add 20% to all those prices. I don't think anyone is saying that the only reason the bushies care about hussein is personal, only that it's a somewhat significant factor in why they are paying attention to him now. And yes, W is a figurehead, but he's a figurehead for the remnants of his father's administration, and the continued presense of Hussein _is_ a persistant reminder that their "Great Success" was ultimately just another dismal failure. > This is business and businessmen who get too personal lose > the game. we can only hope. ===== "If we don't allow journalists, politicians, and every two-bit Joe Schmo with a cause to grandstand by using 9-11 as a lame rhetorical device, then the terrorists have already won." -- "Shredder" "To announce that there must be no criticism of the president or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -- Theodore Roosevelt . Hi, First off everybody seemed to have a great time hanging out before the show. It was nice to finally have real contact with a lot of the people I have been emailing for the last year+. Before the Bowery shows last year we really didn't get the opportunity to talk much. As Ed mentioned I got my Fillmore poster autographed by the band. I rolled it open for Kimberly and thought the top was the bottom so his signature is upside down(after the show I asked him to sign my copy of Grand Central right side up, he chuckled). I unfortunately only got to meet three of The Soft Boys. Robyn never really came up from the basement of Maxwell's for any extended length of time. Kimberly was kind enough to run the poster downstairs(downstairsland?)and have Robyn sign it, a real class act. Morris came to visit us in the front lounge of Maxwell's, he was very quiet but also very kind and as Ed said he seemed confused but he did inform us that they were the opener for the show. He also mentioned that the episode of Live @ The World Cafe they did the day before will air in December. I think we were all pretty thrilled to be seeing a two set Soft Boys concert, even if it only meant a few extra songs. Also, the set break gave everyone the chance to chat some more. The concert itself? Well what can I say, it was really great. The sound was great, the band seemed in great spirits, with Mathew passing out free beer to lucky audience members and water to some young(and I do mean young)ladies in the audience. The first set was nearly an hour and the second set was about an hour also, that's minus the lengthy delay between the second set and the encore. Prior to the encore Robyn said his voice was shot and that they were only going to do one more, Only The Stones Remain. He as Ed stated sang it in a lower register and did not wave his arms about as per the usual. I saw a copy of the second setlist, he dropped two songs from the list, OM and something like(I don't remember exactly what it said) If you know(remember)The Time. That second one was the second song of the encore, does anyone know what that could be? Anyway, I wish I was going to the NYC shows but I have too much to do and that would be way to much driving. I can't wait to hear about the other shows on the tour and hopefully Robyn's voice stays healthy for the duration. I think one of the reasons the Soft Boys released "Side Three" might be partly financial. Let's face it -- "Nextdoorland" is not going to sell a million copies.
