The Bush clan is well known for holding a grudge. The hawks (i.e. everybody but Colin Powell) in the current administration might be using this trait to turn Bush's attention to Iraq, but they have something greater than mere revenge in mind. They want to use a conquered and "democratized" Iraq as a jumping off point for regime change in other countries in the middle east. I'm sure this idea has been kicking around in the right wing think tanks for years, and now people from those think tanks run the U.S. government. Side 3 worked for me much as Nextdoorland did: it took a little while for it to seem other than generic Hitchcock, but when ti did, I ended up liking it quite well (mostly). "Coming Through" and "Evil Guy" still seem like (aptly) b-sides to me, but the other tracks I could see being on a regular album. But to answer your actual question ("what harm could it possibly do?"), I have lots of albums that I've never really warmed to, simply because actually listening to them, and learning which are the good songs and which are best skipped, is too exhausting. This is particularly true for artists who work effectively within a fairly limited sonic palette but not so well outside it: I can take an EP definitely from such folks, thirty-five to forty-five minutes pretty well...but seventy? There might be some good songs buried back there - but by the time I get to them, I'm just burnt out. (Exercise: open a phone book to "Smith." Run your eyes slowly down the column after columns of Smiths. After a little while, the letters start losing their letterness and start looking like nearly abstract blobs. In the absence of distinction, things blur into meaninglessness.) As it happens, I could imagine a _Nextdoorland_ with four of the tracks from _Side 3_ on it, especially if some of the EP's stronger tracks (what's the one with the wicked guitar solo sound?) replaced some of the album's weaker ones - but that's incidentally true, not universally. That is, I will insist that an album with ten excellent songs is a much better album than an album with those ten excellent songs and ten more crappy ones. Yeah, eventually you can find those ten songs and program your player to ignore the crappy ones - but itssortalikeleavingthespacesoutbetweenwords: people can read it, but it takes much more effort to find the words. And most music fans don't listen to one album - they've got great huge hanging bunches. You also asked something about whether there was a second leg and whether there would be skipping: I think you mean hopping, since skipping requires *both* legs. - --Jeffrey with 2 Fs Jeffrey and the great hanging bunches J e f f r e y N o r m a n The Architectural Dance Society www.uwm.edu/~jenor/ADS.html ::Solipsism is its own reward:: __Crow T.
