I'd recommend early Caravan as well. It's not at all like the Soft Machine, but has this vibe reminiscent of early Floyd and early Traffic. I like it, at least. Personally, I can't get into Henry Cow, National Health, or most instrumental prog. If you like Soft Machine, I'd suggest checking out Gentle Giant, King Crimson's "Lizard", or Andre/Elsie Popp & his Pixieland Band, who are the Soft Machine's nearest competitors in the prog-style sounds-that-come-out-of-nowhere category. Volumes 1 & 2 are the least predictable-sounding albums I've got and that's part of why I like them, at least. Thing about Lizard, is that if you expect it to sound like a King Crimson album, you'll hate it. Pretend that there's a band called Lizard who decided to put out a strange jazz-influenced prog album called "King Crimson". Or at least, that's my opinion - -----Original Message----- From: owner-fegmaniax@smoe.org [mailto:owner-fegmaniax@smoe.org]On Behalf Of steve Sent: Friday, August 30, 2002 2:35 PM To: fegmaniax@smoe.org Subject: Re: soft machine/how come... And perhaps some Caravan, maybe "In The Land Of Grey And Pink," or "For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night." I see that Amazon has the Soft Machine 1 & 2 CD for $14.99. - - Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Aug 2002 09:41:09 -0400 From: "Maximilian Lang" Subject: REAP Jazz great Lionel Hampton. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Aug 2002 22:00:58 -0400 From: Johnathan Vail Subject: Alternate Squid Lyric Database Just for fun I have created a database page for alternate lyrics. This is where he changes the lyric from the original (usually album version) to something else. http://newts.org/~vail/feg/index.html The main purpose was to learn PHP and SQL which has now happened. I may add a few feeping creatures so check back as people add to it. Somebody is actually looking at my site! of course we are! actually, I'll tell you a funny story about your site. last year, before the soft boys show in dc, there was a gathering at Dave's house before going over to the show. I answered a general invite for dc area fegs to stop on by, but I had never met anyone who was going to be there. being terrible with picking up people's names when I first meet them, I did some research on your site to acquaint myself with some of the motley cast of characters I would be meeting. anyway, about 1/2 hour before we went over to the show, woj & eddie tews arrived. someone (bayard?) greeted woj at the door and I was standing there as well. i turned to eddie and, recognizing him from some shots at your site, I said "so, you must be eddie." he wheeled on me with this look in his eye I can only describe as near-paranoid and said something like "how do you know me?!" I don't think he was reassurred when I explained I had been researching his visage on feg fotos. but I meant well, honestly. - -ed ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V11 #273 ********************************
