I'm kinda torn about something like this. I mean, if say Krieger had died instead of Morrison, and they had just decided to do a couple dates with Billy Duffy sitting in, it wouldn't raise much of anyone's eyebrow. It's just ultimately their dumb luck that the singer -- the mystique of the band -- happened to croak (well, not just luck, but...). It's not like anyone is going to buy tickets to this show thinking Morrison is going to be singing -- and if anyone does, fuck 'em for being too stupid to live. Hell, frequently at shows The Doors did in the sixties Morrison was too fucked up to sing at anyways, so they just turned off the lights and had Manzarek sing everything anyways. Ian Astbury's a bad idea, but if the surviving members of INXS can go around touring post-Hutchence, why shouldn't the remaining Doors play together. Not that INXS are in The Doors league in anything but lead singer fuck-ability, but because I doubt they're going to make enough cash for it to really be worth just doing it for the money. Even if Densmore sits out, they'll still have a higher percentage of clasic line-up band members than anyone 60's-70's group touring state fairs this summer. But seriously, Ian Astbury? I mean, he's not even the best choice named Ian to emerge from an English 80's band with a goofy ass name. At least fourth best Ian, in fact (behind McCulloch, Broudie, and McNabb -- Ian Curtis could also work, if he wasn't more convenient for Morrison than the other three). Hell, even Janis Ian would be more fun. ===== "If we don't allow journalists, politicians, and every two-bit Joe Schmo with a cause to grandstand by using 9-11 as a lame rhetorical device, then the terrorists have already won." -- "Shredder" "To announce that there must be no criticism of the president or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -- Theodore Roosevelt . Now, The Doors without Jim did two whole albums, which were just awful - cringeworthy, embarrassing affairs with nothing whatsoever to recommend themselves (just like the rest of the albums, I can hear some of you cry). For whatever reason, Morrison made the Doors what they were - without him, well, just have a couple of minutes' listen to either of those two dreadful albums and decide for yourself. The notion that Morrison fucked up the Doors' live shows is not true. Well, when I say not true, I mean that the rest of the Doors were frequently just as awful with no help from Jim at all - I've got the bootlegs to bear this out. None of the many bootlegs I've ever heard has Manzarek as lead singer throughout. I can't think of a single reason why they would want to do the reunion - I can understand INXS: take a shit band with a shit singer, take away the shit singer and you've still got a shit band - the Doors, for whatever reasons and whether anyone likes it or not, are iconic, due at least partially to the image of their lead singer. That recorded fight is hilarious. "EEE-go. It's your EEE-go." No, David, it's yours. That plus his rants at Monterey Pop make me think that a "Crosby Talks" comp from the 60s could be amusing. Didn't he spout some in "Journey Through the Past"? There's always been a side of him that reminds me of the villain in "Riot On Sunset Strip" who doses the nice girl w/ LSD. - --- "What the *Hell*" you say?-- This must've been his "lost year" in the early 80s when he was pregnant from Captain Sensibles' devil mask & avoiding the press. Cute little smirk. - --- "snowballing" slang? -- I guess I'd better ask my parents. - --- Profiling -- There was the recent story of a woman selling life-like baby dolls on the internet who became suspicious of a man who bought a lot. But when she found out he was a priest she called the FBI. - --- Almazonia-- I suppose the internet can harbor an infinite number of these. Oh well, it's another flag. Is "unlike in democracy" idiomatic? - --- Zappa-Byrds congruence: Ritual Dance of the Young Pumpkin is a a speeded up 8 Miles High & the guitar explicitly echoes Crosby. - --- I haven't seen Signs and I don't think I will. - --- There -- it's slow in the summer & I responded to *everything* in the last digest.
