The talk was uninspiring (he just read the introductions to two of his books) but the slides were mega-nostalgic and inspired more interesting comments from him. He started with some nice Syd Barrett shots from his book 'Psychedelic Renegades' (only 185 quid, or 495 quid for a copy signed 'Barrett' by the madcap himself), followed by stacks and stacks of 1972 Ziggy Stardust shots from his forthcoming 'Moonage Daydream' and a load of miscellaneous Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Lou and David, Lou and Nico, David and Jagger, Iggy and James Williamson, Iggy and all the Stooges, Debbie Harry, all the Blondies, Queen, Freddie Mercury, Roxy (including a completely ludicrous shot of Brian Eno wearing a sort of ostrich feather cummerbund), Johnny Rotten, John Cale, Noddy Holder(!), Steve Harley, that sort of thing. The main item he was flogging was a general glam rock book called 'Blood and Glitter'. See for further info. MR went to Cambridge and used to know David Gilmour in the Jokers Wild days, which is how he got introduced to Syd. Apparently he hasn't met up with Syd recently - the book signing was co-ordinated by Syd's nephew Ian Barrett (to whom Syd is "Uncle Roger"), and by Syd's sister. There was one shot from the Madcap sessions in the same stripy flat, with Syd's bare feet occupying about a third of the picture, Syd lying on the floor behind them, and the nude girl in the background. According to MR, she used to go around nude everywhere, but wasn't actually Syd's girlfriend. And another nice pic of Syd looking up beside his record player. Wish I had 185 quid to spare! Apparently Gilmour still takes care that Syd gets his royalties from the Floyd, and according to MR, it was a Gilmour's insistence that 'Echoes' featured so many Syd songs (3 album tracks and 2 singles IIRC). The 'Transformer' cover was done either at a 1972 Lou Reed and the Tots gig at Kings Cross Odeon (I was at that one!) or at a photo session during the same week - I didn't quite catch what he said. The 'Raw Power' cover was done at a Stooges gig at the same venue, within a few days of the Lou Reed performance. So two of MR's most memorable covers were done within a week, probably at the same venue. MR agreed strongly when I suggested that Lou's career seemed to be grinding to a halt at that time, and it was only the interest shown in Lou by Bowie producing 'Transformer' that got Lou a hit LP and single. Quite odd really when you think that at that date Lou was a seasoned road performer and songwriter, whereas Bowie had barely got going. MR had obviously become really hooked on photography (as opposed to male modelling, writing porn etc) when he met up with Bowie at a gig in Birmingham in early 1972. There were acres and acres of 35mm slides of 'Mr Bowie' (as he usually referred to him) in the dressing room, applying make-up, wearing strange outfits, performing, partying (one interesting shot of Lou with his arm round Bowie on a sofa and empty glasses and party rubbish strewn all round the place) and posing. Lots of details of who designed which costume, who applied which make-up and when each hairstyle was introduced, which didn't really grip a non-Bowie person like me (well, all right, I did dance to 'Rebel Rebel' at the time). But the shot he was really proud of was the b/w one of Bowie leaning backwards and chewing Mick Ronson's guitar strings, and it is a goodie. Have you seen that one? He points out that Bowie isn't actually down on his knees, he is just kind of splayed out (I have just found that a load of these pics are on the website at the gallery, so you can look at them there). Apparently MR successfully sued Queen for borrowing his "four heads" image from Queen II for use in the Bohemian Rhapsody "promo" - as he insisted on calling video clips. He obviously had no time for Oasis or Robbie Williams, and very little for Madonna. Speaking as an old fogey myself, I was a bit disappointed that he didn't seem to be very open to anything new - 1969 to 1979 was "it" as far as he was concerned, and although he still takes pictures, he didn't actually show us anything more recent than a 1980 shot of Siouxsie Sue. Yup, but he chose "Roger" in particular because it had "positive connotations" in that it meant "yes" as aeronautical terms. He was really, really into jets, man. Last I heard he's now a mellow-ish born-again Christian, but he still goes by Roger (although he sometimes voices some regret over the name change). _____________ Jeffrey: >>> Good morning for music today... also heard Mercury Rev's cover of John > Cale's "I Keep a Close Watch". Sounded pretty good... didn't know it was MR until the DJ told me. ______________ Figured I'd get some flak for the Beta Band thing, but they just seem to me to be the worst case of the emperor's new clothes in ages. Part of it's just taste; I don't like the guy's vocal quality and he doesn't seem to do much melodically within his really limited range. He also has that tendency to go into endless lyrical mantras of lines that don't seem particularly interesting or evocative. But what really bugs me is that instead of actually finishing songs they seem to just toss in some other crap in a different time signature-- such as "One Is the Loneliest Number" or the theme from "The Black Hole", neither of which are particularly in need of reiteration-- and chalk it up to experimentalism. I've tried to see what all the fuss is about, but I just don't get it. It's different from the reaction I have to, say, Belle & Sebastian, where I can appreciate the craft but apart from a single here or there they just don't set my world on fire. The Beta Band actually seems kind of... well, bad to me. And apparently me alone. On the positive side I get to see a free Sonic Youth show this weekend at the Sunset Junction Street Fair, and, baby willing, maybe even Sleater-Kinney the night after that. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 13:41:14 -0400 From: Stewart Russell Subject: Re: McGuinn/Mercury Rev/Beta Band Rex.Broome wrote: > > Belle & Sebastian abject tedium. The tracks in question were "Insanely Jealous" and "Lady Waters and the Hooded One". That same insistent bass, that same frantic instrumental break - they're (tune/instrumentation-wise) like two halves of the same track (for the price of one, no less).
