I like it a lot - in particular, I like that it wasn't really about the _Weekly World News_-worthy premise (to the extent that quibblers, doubtless, will start riddling those plot points w/holes), and that Shyamalan fairly obviously is thumbing his nose at the CGI-happy Hollywood hacks and hypercaffeinated post-MTV cinematographers: some of the better and most suspenseful moments involved (a) holding a shot while a character walked nearly out of the shot, then back; (b) a still shot of nothing but a flashlight on the ground, shot from a low angle; and (c) five or ten seconds of complete blackness. I'm not even sure there *were* any "effects" as such - at least, if there were, they were so seamless and minimal that I didn't notice them. I found this great little stream, Well, I *thought* that I had uncovered a rare and obscure jewel -- 2 days later, I found it listed as a "pre-set" under "Eclectic" in ITunes 3. Oh, well. The guy is all over the place, from experimental & avant garde pieces, to old time punk rock, 1990s indie and the best of "alternative" (cracker, nirvana), with occasional hip hop, trance, techno, reggae, blues, cowboy, etc thrown in for extra flavor. and it's all great. this is the last 30 minutes: sonic youth -- superstar (carpenters) fairport convention -- come all ye the living end -- have they forgotten dinosaur jr -- over your shoulder negativland -- stress in marriage radiohead -- karma police pizzicato 5 -- the girl from ipanema iggy/stooges -- raw power tom waits -- rain dogs joy division -- digital i mean, where else do you hear tom waits and joy division together? sonic youth & fairport convention? I haven't been genuinely creeped out by a movie in a *long* time. Shyamalan's films don't need special effects - they are about the story itself, not how cool the story can look. *coughSpidermancough* He has a refreshing knack for directing. Best of all, his films don't beat you over the head with details. There is a perfect subtlety about them. We have yet to be disappointed by one of his movies. The casting was superb. I'm so glad Joaquin Phoenix isn't being typecast, and I really hope to see a lot more out of Rory Culkin...he should have been Anakin Skywalker. On another note, is it just me, or are movies getting shorter again? Creeped out by the magical world Everything is happening behind your eyes Creeped out American girl Creeped out by the animations Up the wall, out the window they twirl Everything is happening behind your eyes It's behind your eyes Creeped out American girl Creeped out by the blood you're flowing Tell the future every twenty eight days Everything is happening behind your eyes It's behind you Well your daddy's in the garage and that's never a good sign And your mother's in the kitchen making demons in the pale moonshine And your grandma's in the loft with a metal detector Looking for the animal behind your eyes It's behind you Creeped out American girl Creeped out by your darker feelings You need a boy 'cause it can't be a girl Everything is happening behind your eyes It's behind your eyes Creeped out American girl. - -----Original Message----- From: glen uber [mailto:blint@mac.com] Sent: 18 August 2002 18:03 To: Tony Blackman Cc: fegmaniax@smoe.org Subject: Re: Edinburgh gigs On Sunday, August 18, 2002, at 06:47 AM, Tony Blackman wrote: > American Girl' (Electric) This is an original and surely not the Tom Petty song of the same title, right? - -g- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Aug 2002 09:31:21 From: Stewart Russell Subject: Re: Edinburgh gigs Tony Blackman wrote: > > Sadowitz is a big fan ah, thank you.
