There is no economic gain from these crimes. murder or any purposefully executed physical or psycological abuse of a spouse or anyone else can always be associated with rapacity or greed in at least some way, no? aggresive situational control, jealousy, non-humility, aren't these all either in moderation or extreme a result of greed? true hate and despise are also a result of greed usually from envious or vengeful sentiment. gSs ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 08:25:55 -0700 (PDT) From: "Eugene Hopstetter, Jr." Subject: Mum good Mum. I have two of their albums on vinyl (FatCat records, iirc), and as soon as I put them on, I could swear I'm somewhere else. Delicious, diaphanous music. So fragile you'd think it would dissipate, like breath through steam. It's close to the Bjork and Sigur Ros thing -- must be something in the air in Iceland. Fans of Radiohead would probably like Mum, too. The music is so delicate, so serendipitous, that I have absolutely no idea how they could have made it. How they could rehearse it, let alone even discuss it before playing it, is beyond me. It freaks me out. It's like the sound of a daydream. . Yahoo! Well, not in recent centuries. Someone like Linnaeus or Cuvier separated them on the basis of whether they laid eggs in the water or on land. implies that Linnaeus's class Amphibia dates from 1758. Before that I think there was quite a lot of confusion between amphibians, reptiles and even invertebrate things like arachnids. > they have permanent external gills and lungs and forelegs but no > hind limbs and no scales. Big fuckin' surprise - it's not as good as "The Soft Bulletin." It starts out with an incredibly fantastic song, "Fight Test," which I would add to my short list of "perfect pop songs" along with "Queen of Eyes" and "The Mayor of Simpleton." The title track is also fun - I like the way Wayne Coyne says "Yoshim-eh" - and there's a few other good tracks, but on the other hand there's too many mellow trippy songs one after another, and some really trite lyrics ("What is love and what is hate, and why does it matter?"). On the plus side, the production is incredibly inventive, and drummer Steven Drozd is truly the man of a thousand beats. Plus, there's a song about parallel universes. I'd give it a 7 out of 10, or maybe 8 if the mellow songs grow on me. One thing I really like about the Flaming Lips is their total lack of irony. Wayne Coyne's tongue has never even been in the vicinity of his cheek. They're totally straightforward, and while the wide-eyed naivete thing can get a little annoying sometimes, all in all I find it very refreshing.
